Believe it or not, America had libraries long before we had the internet or computers. And believe it or not they could be incredible time wasters. At least that’s what one young man thought way back in In 1876. And he was only twenty-four at the time. He published what he called “A Classification Subject Index for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library.” Also known as the Dewey Decimal System.
Melville Dewey devised the Dewey Decimal System because he was obsessed with time.
Or to be more exact, he was obsessed with saving time. So much so that he shortened his name to Melvil Dui instead of Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey. Eventually he stuck with Melvil Dewey to save confusion. But to say he was obsessed with saving time is no exaggeration.
Mr. Dewey’s system organized a library based on the division of all knowledge into 10 groups. And he assigned 100 numbers to each group. For example 000–099 was general works. And philosophy and psychology were 100–199. Religion was in 300–399 and social sciences were found in 400–499.
And there are other divisions, but you can look those up if you’re interested.
The main thing is, Mel (see, I shortened his name even more) came up with kind of a shorthand so people could find books in a library much faster. Because, before that, libraries classified their books based on a “whatever” system. In other words, when you asked the librarian where a book was, they might look it up according to book color, or size, or title, or name of author, or…whatever they could remember.
So, thankfully Mr. Dewey cleaned up those “citadels of disorder” with his system.
Now, before you get the wrong idea, believe me. I’m not obsessed, on that level, with saving time. And I’m thrilled that these days, when I want a book, I can just look for it online and order it.
But it IS so crucial to organize your business and your life so you don’t waste time. And that’s why I focus, quite a bit, on schedule control in my RondaReady System. Because I don’t want entrepreneurs and business owners to work every day in the “whatever” system. And it’s why my first RondaReady UNversity class is a deeper-dive, how-to on the subject of time management…which I prefer to call schedule control.
So, the deadline to enroll in my monthly RondaReady UNversity…and be in time for the first one in February…is January 31st. After that, you’ll be too late for February’s session. You could still enroll, but you’d have to wait for the next class in March.
My deeper-dive, how-to coaching can help you build your business better and faster with a proven system. And monthly tuition is only $15. Remember, tardiness won’t be tolerated. You can cancel anytime. But dropouts will drop out forever.
