Yeah, when you’re 20, you can sing “time is on my side” and feel like it’s true. But then, you blink a few times, and “suddenly” you’ve got a lot less time. And it’s so easy to get lost somewhere between distractions and focus.
Here’s a couple of tips to help you balance distractions and focus
Do you manage your time (as I like to say, control your schedule)? Or do you let it manage you (control you)? That’s where the difference between distractions and focus comes in.
Did you know, every interruption or distraction from your work takes about 5 to 7 minutes of recovery time? In other words, it can take that long to get back on track. Because you gotta get your focused thinking cap back on and back in the right gear. And that means you gotta figure out where you left off. And those 5 to 7 minutes, multiple times a day, every day, week, month, and year, add up to a HUGE waste of time.
Think about all that lost productivity time. And, even worse, you’ll never get it back.
Yikes! It feels horrible just to write that sentence. And then to ponder what it means.
When you can’t stay on task, and your mind wanders all around, anxiety typically creeps in. And that can have a lasting negative effect on you, your business, and anyone around you who’s affected by your lack of productivity.
So, try this…
When you’re working at your desk, don’t have more than one thing in front of you. Don’t be outnumbered. It’s like trying to listen to more than one person at a time. You can’t do it. So, keep your work “One Thing at a Time.”
And how about that whole Facebook thing?
A lot of people spend a lot of time scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed or timeline. There used to be a Chrome extension that “kills” the FB newsfeed. Not sure if it still works. But, wow, talk about a time saver. And distraction destroyer. If you’re truly serious about daily forward momentum for your business, kill that FB newsfeed.
I have lots of other ways you can make better use of your time. But, for now, try those couple of tips. And let me know how it helped you.
