A new perspective can beat old habits
I’d like to share a story with a “ring of truth” to it that helped me get a new perspective today. It was one of those days that make you wonder if early senility is setting in. I was sitting in the car, talking to my dad on the phone, while waiting for my daughter to meet me for an appointment. She arrived. And we went in to the appointment.
Until that very minute, I hadn’t realized my favorite ring wasn’t on my finger. And you know that feeling of panic? The kind where the blood drains out of your face? That was me.
After retracing my steps in my head, I decided the ring must still be in the car. So, I went back, opened the driver side door, looked everywhere, and couldn’t find it.
Here’s where the new perspective part came in.
And you know how sometimes you have to mumble to yourself to take a deep breath and calm down? Yeah, that was me. Then, I decided to go to the passenger side and search… even though I just knew there was no way it could be there.
And I was right.
It wasn’t anywhere over there. But, from my vantage point on the passenger side, I could see my ring wedged into a seam in the driver seat. That new perspective gave me the right angle to find my ring. Yay!
Author, Bob Selden, said, “Learning is about seeing things from a different perspective.”
That was certainly true in my case. Once I moved and changed my view, I was able to get out of my own way. Then, instead of thinking my ring just HAD to be in a certain place, I was able to see where it actually was.
If you stop and think about what might be holding you back, you might discover you’re in your own way, too. It’s easy to get that way when you’re the one running “the whole show”. But you might be overjoyed at what a new perspective could do for you and your business.
