I was talking with one of my newer clients, recently, about number crunching. In other words, measuring his business’ performance. I asked him to describe his process. He said his accountant gave him a quarterly P&L statement. I asked if he kept track of where most of his business comes from and if he could easily connect those with specific income results. He said a simple, “No.” And…he doesn’t have a good system for tracking his referrers either. Or how much income each one of them is worth to his business. I wish I could say this is rare. But it’s not.
