Mama Mia, atsa summa mobile delicioso

Elena had always dreamed of sharing the rich flavors of her Italian heritage with the world. So, after years of saving and planning, she finally opened “Mama Mia Mobile.” It was her pride and joy, a ruby red food truck she called, wait for it, Ruby. And you might wonder what kind of Italian food could come from a food truck. Well, how about:

  • Pizza
  • Lasagna
  • Fiorentina Steak
  • Polenta
  • Ossobuco
  • Risotto
  • Carbonara
  • Truffles
  • Focaccia
  • Tiramisu
  • Italian roast coffee

Yep, no doubt about it. Elena’s food was Mama Mia delicioso.

But despite her culinary expertise, Elena struggled to get a steady stream of customers to her truck.

So, one Tuesday evening, after another slow day, Elena brainstormed ways to get more people to know about her and Ruby. And she found a WordPress expert to help her build a website. Then, Elena shared personal and down-to-earth stories about her travels in Italy, recipes from her Nonna, and the history behind each dish she served. And, as it turned out, readers started sharing her posts on social media.

And before she even realized it, her fans drove more traffic to her site and to her food truck.

Ruby started to become famous, too.

Then, Elena turned her posts into an email newsletter. And she offered subscribers exclusive discounts and updates on new menu items. And much to her delight, lots of subscribers signed up.

As all that was going on, Elena saw a huge boost to the lunchtime lines next to Ruby. And there were plenty of times she’d actually sell out of some of the food. So, that meant she had to start ordering more from local merchants. And that made them happy to refer more customers to her, too.

Talk about the domino effect. Mama Mia! And all this Italian food talk is making me hungry.

Fence builders do even better with these tools

Big fish, small pond, and an ocean view?

In the peaceful coastal town of Oceanview, Phil Wise (not his real name) was the undisputed big fish in a very small pond. Because Phil owned “WiseAcre Wines” a thriving wine store that was the go-to wine source for locals and tourists alike.

Success process and a figment of imagination

This morning I thought about some hard working people I’ve had the privilege of serving over the years. And I imagined interviewing one small business owner, who sort of represents them all, about the success process. Because I know they all took different paths. But they also all had a lot in common.

And I think you’ll see that the success process isn’t for a privileged few.

Here’s how the interview, in my head, went…

Me: Hello! Thanks for joining us today. Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your business?

Business Owner: Hi! Thanks for having me on. My name is Pat Quinn (fictitious character’s name). And I’m the founder and CEO of Bio Silver Away. We’re a sustainable products company. And our goal is to reduce plastic waste by offering eco-friendly alternatives. Our products include reusable bags, water bottles, and biodegradable packaging materials.

Me: That sounds like a challenging, but awesome goal. How’s business these days?

Business owner: Well, we like to joke and say it goes in cycles. But that’s pretty corny. Let’s just say, great!

Me: (laughing) I like it. And I’m glad to hear things are going well. What would you say is your success process?

(Just keepin’ it real. Well, sounding real anyway.)

Business owner: Naturally we started with an idea. I think you call it “Vision.” Then, we did plenty of research to be sure there was a market out there for what we would offer. And we discovered there’s a big market. But we also discovered there’s plenty of competition to serve those people and businesses.

Me: Yeah, there’s always competition for a hot market or niche. What did you do to get ahead of the pack?

Business owner: Well, to start with, we reached out to every one we knew. And we asked them to refer us to businesses who they thought would be interested in sustainable products like ours. Plus, we reached out to lots more people we DIDN’T know by setting up profiles on social media channels. We kept at it day and night. And I guess you could say a big part of our success process was how we never let up. Good ol’ persistence.

Me: There’s no doubt it paid off. Because I checked your website. And you guys are on fire!

(Here’s where the interview becomes totally self-serving.)

Business owner: That’s true. But it wasn’t that way the whole time. At one point, during the pandemic, our sales slacked WAY off. And, yeah, that was bad. But there was a, shall we say, Bio Silver lining to the slowdown. Because it gave us some breathing room to figure out where we could improve. Turned out to be several places where we could improve and streamline our operations.

Me: So, what did you do?

Business owner: Well, a friend, and fellow business owner raved about your RondaReady Business System hub. And they told me how much you’d helped them manage their whole operations so much better. So, of course I was interested.

Dog walking in the hub is so much better

Danielle (not her real name) loved dogs. And that certainly doesn’t make her unique. Because who doesn’t love dogs. Right? But Danielle didn’t just feed, house, and love HER dogs. She also developed a little side hustle walking other people’s dogs. And she found out she “had a way” with them. She could get them to respond to commands. Dreamy hair, just one of the side effects of clear vision

In 2019, Stella (not her real name) finally took the leap. And she opened “Dreamy Hair,” a salon dream she’d had for 10 years, in her hometown. And one big part, Stella had always seen in her vision, was a cool website.

Yep, she knew Dreamy Hair would need a strong online presence.

But she didn’t want a website with a bunch of advertisy-sounding, boring facts and figures. No, she wanted HER website to feel like an extension of her friends-talkin-with-friends Dreamy Hair salon. Sort of like another room where visitors could get convos started. And then continue the chats when they arrived at the salon.

She figured the blog would help her with the story and qualifications part. Because that’s where she could share real-life hair care tips, styling tutorials, and the latest happenings at the Dreamy Hair salon.

By that time, Stella was really getting warmed up.

Then, she made it simple for clients to book appointments online with a booking system built right in. And customers told her how much they appreciated the convenience of scheduling their visits without having to call the salon. After that, she sprinkled testimonials throughout the website. And she added links where satisfied clients could leave reviews. Combining all that with her bubbly personality, she was able to build trust and community around her “dreamy” brand.

I could tell you more about how she used SEO and social media to drive traffic to her website. And I could let you in on a little bit about how she ran targeted ads, for local users, to promote specials and new services. Oh yeah, I could also mention how she started a newsletter where subscribers received special discounts.

Digital tools are so much lighter than steel

A traditional landscaping business may not seem like a prime candidate for cutting-edge technology. But one smart landscaper learned how to use digital tools to transform and grow his operations pretty impressively.

I’ll tell you about those digital tools. But a little about John, first.

He’s an owner of a mid-sized landscaping company. And he always knew that efficiency and customer engagement are keys to success.

But, to start with, John ran his business manually. In other words, he wrote out bids and invoices by hand. And he answered calls. And he made all the business calls himself. Very hands-on. Naturally, that meant a ton of paperwork and face-to-face or phone meetings.

But John’s a people guy. So, that didn’t really bother him. But what DID bother him was when business got so good that he felt like he never truly caught up. And his weekends turned into weekdays. And every day seemed to overflow right into the next one.

Keen eye for detail on both sides of the camera

Laura (not her real name) is a professional photographer with a keen eye for detail. And when she first started her business, and opened her own studio, she developed a creative marketing strategy to get things going as fast as possible.

She really put that keen eye for detail to good use.

And it helped showcase her unique artistry and build a thriving client base. Wanna find out how she positioned her photography business for success? Great. Because I was just gonna share that.

And it showcases her latest works, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and client testimonials. She posts regularly. And she even discovered the benefits of using relevant hashtags.

Yep, that keen eye for detail again.

As I mentioned, she had to work with a tiny shoestring budget. So, she figured out how to drive organic traffic to her website. And that meant Laura would need to focus on SEO and content marketing. Fortunately she loves to talk about photography. So, she adds regular updates to her blog with posts on photography techniques, editing tutorials, and personal stories from her shoots.

Beauty salon got the total makeover

Natalie (not her real name) had always dreamed of owning her own beauty salon. And, from her early twenties, she could see herself pampering and getting to know her local clients. Yep, she definitely had a clear vision of what she wanted. So, after months of planning (and investing her life savings) she opened “Lux Lounge” in the cool old town district of her hometown.

At first, the Lux Lounge beauty salon shined like lacquer nail polish.

Natalie built a steady flow of clients who were thrilled with their transformation. And then she even had to hire a small team of stylists. And it wasn’t long before word-of-mouth helped fill her booking calendar for weeks in advance.

But, just as might imagine, her success came with some new challenges. And Natalie started to juggle too many responsibilities. Instead of just pampering her wonderful clients, she had to:

  • Manage appointments,
  • Order supplies,
  • Set up and clean up,
  • Handle payroll, and
  • Market the beauty salon

Talk about feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Well, actually Natalie preferred not to talk about it. And the more the business grew, the more she felt like her whole life was at the salon. And that took a big, negative impact on her rest and recovery time with her family.

Then, things exploded on a very chaotic Monday,

Natalie walked in to the beauty salon to find that two of her stylists had called in sick. And the waiting area was already crowded with clients. So, of course, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. Because her clients were always her top priority.

Finally, around 9:15 that evening, Natalie locked the salon door after the last client left. Then she slumped into a chair, and sighed in exhaustion. And she knew she had to be honest and admit she couldn’t keep up this pace. Her dream of owning a beauty salon had swiftly turned into an almost non-stop marathon.

She was headed for burnout.

Fortunately, Natalie remembered a business management consultant a friend had told her about. So, she made an appointment to get some help. And together, they streamlined operations by setting up a smooth-running business hub. Then, with that system set up, Natalie could automate and delegate tasks her staff and her software.

And that allowed her to focus on her passion again. To make her clients feel beautiful and pampered.

Natalie also gradually began to find her work and home life balance. And she was able to start each week rested, recovered, and ready to work.
