Some high school students are more fortunate than they probably even realize. Because they’ve been able to graduate high school and actually take up to a year “off” before going to college or starting a career. There are lots of websites focused on what they call the “gap year.” And many of them offer travel programs where students can figure out their lives. At least, that’s the hope. Especially for the parents who pay for those trips.
If you’re a student or parent looking into gap year travel programs, consider this.
First, you’ve got lots of choices. So, don’t jump into the first offer or online “special” you find. And even more important than that is this. Be sure you know what you hope for and want to gain from travel programs and what they offer. And, on top of that, be sure you know why one option might be better than another.
Here’s why. And also some of what you can expect to find in the gap year travel programs.
- You could beef up on leadership skills
- There’s opportunity for new connections with new friends
- Foreign countries mean learning new languages
- New languages can open up new cultural experiences
- Living somewhere, instead of reading about it, means hands-on experience
I’ve seen some of the info on a few travel programs websites. And they tend to promise, or at least suggest that your year off from institutional studies can nurture qualities you’ll need for life after high school.
I agree that it’s important to develop leadership skills, new connections, and learn new things. And I believe that should be a lifelong habit. But I also know that leadership skills, new connections, and learning stuff doesn’t provide you what you need to RUN a successful business. Or get the best paying job possible.
And I know, from experience, that many high school students are anxious and depressed when they graduate. Because that little voice won’t leave ’em alone. The one that says, “What am I supposed to do now?!”
That’s a difficult question, at best, to answer without a Vision of who you are.
Or if your vision for yourself doesn’t fit into the so-called “normal path” of college.
So, if you believe college or a dull job are your only options, it can be depressing, to say the least.
It’s crucial for parents and teens to communicate, openly, about options and decisions for life after high school. And it’s so important to be flexible, as a parent, about those options and decisions. Because, these days, young people have options that didn’t exist before.
College is absolutely not required for most jobs and careers anymore. And that’s great. Because, in case you haven’t noticed, college is WAY expensive. And too many young people go for degrees that won’t even pay for themselves in the real world.
So, if you (or your kids) are looking for alternatives to college, like gap year travel programs, here’s another option.
