Long since forgotten words that’ll stick in your head
Those old English talkers sure had some weird words for stuff. Even if your native language is English, I bet you won’t recognize most these long since forgotten lyrics.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I’ll be mine!
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Yeah, probably best that they’re long since forgotten.
But I bet you might recognize the more modern English version of them. Especially if you watched any old Christmas movies last week. Because there are lots of movies where people sing the same song on New Year’s Eve. And it goes a little something like this:
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And old lang syne?
(Chorus)
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Uh-huh, that rings a bell. Right? And in a couple of nights from now, at the stroke of midnight to be precise, they’ll ring the bell again. And people all over the world will act like they’re singing along. Of course, a lot of them will be a little too tipsy to care whether they sing it right or not. But they’ll act like they’re singing it just the way it was written.
And the words were written a LONG time ago.
Robert Burns, a poet from the 18th century, wrote the poem.
And even though you’ll probably only ever hear one verse, he wrote five long since forgotten verses. Like this one:
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
Sin’ auld lang syne.
OK, I feel tipsy just trying to say those words out loud. How about you?
Of course, I didn’t share all this to give you a history of Auld Lang Syne or the poet, Robert Burns. I just thought I’d share a little back story of the music you might hear this coming weekend. And if you do, I hope you enjoy yourself, stay safe, and make it safely to 2024.
And here’s an idea for how to send off 2023 and welcome 2024 with a bang.
