Who doesn’t want a good life? There’s a question that shouldn’t raise any hands in the audience. Right? Because, of course, everyone wants the best life possible. But it’s not the same for everyone.
For example, I think you could say Jimmy Buffett had a good life.
And it seems weird to say “had” instead of has. Because it just doesn’t seem possible he’s not with us anymore. But not even the relaxed “Mayor of Margaritaville” can live forever.
Author, Ryan White, wrote a book about him, back in 2018. It’s called, “Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All The Way.” But, in spite of the title, even Jimmy’s life wasn’t good ALL the way. Check out this blurb about the book, and notice what happened.
“Buffett wasn’t always the pied piper of beaches, bars, and laid-back living. Born on the Gulf Coast, the son of a son of a sailing ship captain, Buffett scuffed around New Orleans in the late sixties, flunked out of Nashville (and a marriage) in 1971, and found refuge among the artists, dopers, shrimpers, and genuine characters who’d collected at the end of the road in Key West. And it was there, in those waning outlaw days at the last American exit, where Buffett, like Hemingway before him, found his voice and eventually brought to life the song that would launch Parrot Head nation.”
It’s interesting how Jimmy “scuffed around,” “flunked out,” and “found refuge.” Those sound more like loser references. But a real loser would give up.
And he didn’t.
Fortunately he “found his voice” and wrote a song that launched a good life. And, ironically his good, real life grew out of a fictional place. I like how the book blurb described it:
“And just where is Margaritaville? It’s wherever it’s five o’clock; it’s wherever there’s a breeze and salt in the air. And it’s wherever Buffett set his bare feet, smiled, and sang his songs.”
I can only guess, because I didn’t personally know Jimmy Buffett, that he had a clear picture of Margaritaville when he wrote that song. And he probably had a real good idea of what he hoped to do with it once he wrote and recorded it. He might not have fully realized how much his world would change. But then again, maybe even that was part of his vision.
