Have you seen those videos where some guy puts on a good show of working while he’s actually not doing a thing to help? I saw one where the guy went back and forth between pallets of cement bags as other guys carried them to a truck. He made a bunch of trips but never carried a single bag. But the other guys were so busy, they didn’t even seem to notice he hadn’t actually helped at all.
It was hilarious. And he reminded me of a business owner who did the same thing. Sort of.
He put on a good show, in his business, every day.
And I describe it that way because he literally owned every single detail of his business. From sweeping the floors to customer service to executive decisions. He just couldn’t let anybody else do any part of it. It was partly a profits thing. And partly a control thing.
But he DID discover how that kind of control-freak attitude can take a toll. Because, as you might expect, he started to burn out. So, he reluctantly decided maybe it was time for a new hire. And it was such new territory to him, he didn’t even know where to start. So, I gave him this advice:
“Count the money. Focus on the income you plan to make over the next year. And think about how you could get there more efficiently if you focus on the $300 an hour tasks. And let someone else focus on the $10 an hour tasks. Those high dollar tasks are the ones only YOU, the business owner, can do. They’re the ones where you’re working ON your business, not IN it. Because that’s how you have a true chance to scale things up.”
All that day-to-day busy-ness makes you look like the pretend worker.
Busy-ness doesn’t help you build business. It just makes it look like you’re doing more than you are.
And it keeps you wrapped up and strapped down.
Why not hire someone who’s better equipped and has the skill set for office work? They’ll probably be much better at it than you. And you’ll be much better at what you’re much better at. And that combo really can be a good show. Maybe even a blockbuster.
When you break out the calculator and run a few numbers, you might be amazed at how much better you can feel. And that’s what happened with my client.
He did the math and saw how numbers don’t lie. They showed him how he basically couldn’t afford NOT to hire someone. And, since then, he’s told me it was “a game changer.”
In my RondaReady business book, I go into a lot more detail about your business numbers. In fact, I share the whole system I helped my clients set up to scale up 6 and 7 figures businesses. Get a copy of the book, today, at the link below. Why put off your dreams of success even one more day?
