A friend of mine shared a story with me, yesterday. And maybe it won’t mean a thing to you. But I thought it was a great example of how to take each day of life. Personal or business. Doesn’t matter. The story started out with my friend and a group of his friends talking, in a restaurant, about optimism and pessimism.
The old “glass half empty or half full” analogy for optimism came up.
And I like my friend’s take on it. He said optimism has been his choice for 99% of his life. But then he added how he didn’t like the either/or debate. He said, “If you’re truly an optimist, and you see a glass with water at the halfway mark, you’ll just be grateful to have the water. You won’t care whether the glass is half empty or half full.”
When it comes to your business, optimism and pessimism can both work for you. And, in fact, companies use both all the time. How many times have you heard commercials saying things like this? “In economic hard times like these, when every penny counts, our (fill in the blank) will save you time AND money.”
Or how about when you read the latest news and see how crime is up? And even in suburbs or so-called “safe neighborhoods” like yours. That’s when you’ll probably notice more ads and commercials about the latest advances in home security. Cybersecurity too.
It just makes good sense (and dollars) to play to the pessimism and fears of the buying public. That might sound harsh, but it sure works.
And it’s not all bad news out there.
Big companies like Apple and Amazon use optimism as a powerful advertising tool. Apple, with lots of light in their ads. And Amazon with a smile in their logo. They both even use light-hearted, ear-pleasing background music a lot of the time.
Before you know it, subconsciously you start to think how technology makes your life easier. And how wonderful it feels to walk barefoot in a field of grass. Or how love wipes away tears.
But what does any of this have to do with you and your business?
Maybe nothing. Because maybe you think using emotions to advertise is a waste of time. But I believe big companies use it because it just plain works. And you know what else?
When they test their ads and commercials, they keep track. And I guarantee they use a system to keep track. Of course, Apple and Amazon have millions and billions to spend. But even with all that money, they’re still using something similar to what you can get from me.
Yep. My RondaReady system can get help you cruise down your own Amazon in search of those golden Apples you deserve for all your hard work. But my system can only help you if you get it and get started right away.
