I read an article about the paint by numbers fad from back in the 50’s and 60’s. And it said Max S. Klein, who owned the Palmer Paint Company in Detroit, Michigan, got the fad going. An artist, who worked for him, named Dan Robbins, came up with the idea. And he created many of the first paintings.
They sold the paint by number kits under the Craft Master label in 1951.
And by 1954 they had sold some twelve million kits. The article I read said the most popular subjects were landscapes, seascapes, and pets. But they also sold a lot of kits for Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. The advertising on each box said “Every Man a Rembrandt!”
A couple of years ago I asked the question, “Would a great painter like Vincent van Gogh be against something like the paint by numbers kit?” And I said I didn’t think he would. Because Vincent said “The great artist is the simplifier.” Sort of like the acronym K.I.S.S. – Keep It Super Simple
