Are you better today than yesterday?
Ever heard that old Stevie Wonder song where he sings, “I love you more today than yesterday…but not as much as tomorrow?” It’s a love song with obvious goals built in. The person in the song is working toward loving someone more every day. But sometimes goals can make you feel like a failure. Especially when you fall short. When your intentions didn’t meet your expectations. And especially when you’re holding yourself accountable to being better today than yesterday.
When you want to be better today than yesterday, be sure to use the right measuring tool.
Wayne Dyer, in his book “The Power Of Intention,” talks about being “better today than I used to be.” Notice the noun. I…not he. Or she. Or they. And that’s the right measuring tool. Right?
You wanna make sure you’re not as productive and successful as you could or should be? Then, by all means, look for more successful people to compare yourself to. And here’s the problem. Depending on where you look, you can ALWAYS find someone achieving more. You can also find others achieving less. And that can give you a false sense of security about yourself.
So looking outside isn’t the answer. Don’t get me wrong. You can certainly look to others to help motivate you beyond where you are. But YOUR true measure of success is whether you’re better today than yesterday? You might amaze yourself when you just work a daily routine toward what you want to achieve.
