I’ll never forget something my mom told me after I’d just become a new mom. She said, “If you don’t call the shots for how you spend your time, someone else will.” And she told me that because she could see how I was trying to find my way through my work time, husband time, kids time, and personal time.
Yeah, I certainly needed to call the shots so I could stay sane.
Otherwise, it would’ve been like that old saying: “The lunatics are running the asylum.”
So, I learned three simple terms to classify time from a real estate industry coach. And they’re easy. And you’re in luck. Because I’m gonna share them with you now.
Results time – describes when you’re working IN your business
Remodel time – when you’re working ON your business
And Recovery time – another way of describing time away from your business.
Most people start a business and spend the majority of their time (if not all of it!) on that first level. They work day and night IN the business. And that’s how they become the “technician.” I say that’s how you hit the “results time lotto.” And that’s NOT a prize you want or need. Because people who never grow past this stage tend to burn out, drop out, or white knuckle it all the way through to the end.
Or, even worse, they watch their dream turn into just a hobby.
And here’s why this is so important to realize.
Because it’s really about the use of time. It’s a picture of how the old 80/20 rule comes into play. Most people start out being self employed, wearing all the hats, and spending 80% of their time trying to make things happen. Tons of phone calls and appointments. All the paperwork and online details. And don’t forget about meeting clients, managing personnel, inventory, learning software, etc.
The first business book I read, back in the day, was Michael Gerber’s “Emyth.”
It opened my eyes. I saw how I shouldn’t see my business as an extension of myself. No, it had to be its own entity. Because that would be the way I could build something remarkable. Not just a glorified job for myself. That meant I needed to create an income-producing business that would function without me have to do everything.
So, once again, to be clear, you don’t wanna win the results time lotto.
And I realize, in the beginning, you’re responsible for getting most things done. But as you grow and develop, as a business owner, you need to spend less and less of your time in results. And more and more of your time in remodel.
My RondaReady Business System hub might be the tool to help you do that. So, schedule a time to talk with me about it. I might help you get the result that’ll take you to that next phase of your dream. The phase where you call the shots.
