So far there hasn’t been one. But hurricane season is in full swing again. I have a friend who moved down near the Gulf Coast last year. And he told me about what most residents dread the most when a hurricane hits. And it’s the big three: when they lose air conditioning (and refrigeration), lose access to good water, and lose touch.
Meteorologists and weather services always talk about the possible damage to property, trees, and crops. And they warn of wind gusts, coastal flooding, and pier damage. Things like that.
But what about the lose touch part?
Because loved ones and friends, who live in other parts of the country, need and want to hear from you when they know you’re in harm’s way. And when phone lines and internet connections go down, and they lose touch with you, hours can feel like days.
You’re probably like me. We take the communication device in our pocket for granted. Because it’s so easy to just pop it out, check messages, text somebody, and scroll through the web. So you don’t even think about it. Right? Until something happens and you can’t use it.
Then, suddenly, it’s like a category 5 hurricane just hit. Wind damage whirls through your head. Thoughts about what you’re missing flood your brain. And the loss of connection is like rampant beach erosion.
And all you can do is ride out the storm till connections are restored.
And the wave of relief that rolls over you is like a day at the beach.
Am I right?
