OK, don’t pounce on me right away for what I’m about to say. But I prefer time off without pay. I know that sounds like blasphemy to anyone whose time off is sacred to them.
But I have a little different description of time off without pay.
To get time away from work, and still get paid, typically means your employer includes that in your “benefits package.” But when you work for yourself, it’s a whole ‘nother ballgame. Because if you don’t work, there’s no income. And no income means no “paid time off.”
So, working for yourself means no time off with pay. Right?
Um…not exactly.
One huge reason I made the leap from J.O.B. to business owner was so I could be with my kids. I never wanted family to take a full-time backseat to all the other parts of life.
And when I “went out on my own”, my oldest child was only two. And my second daughter was only three months old. So, my number one reason for owning my own business was to have time with my family. After almost two decades as a business owner, that’s still my number one reason.
Working in the corporate world never allowed enough paid time off to be with my kids when they need me most. And when you have young kids, they need you a lot. Older ones do, too. Even if they’d rather not admit it.
I remember a couple of years ago when my daughter started feeling sick one morning. Thankfully, I was able to be at home with her and take her to the doctor.
I didn’t have to “call in sick” or ask permission to “take time off.”
And one of the best parts was how my System helped keep my business going while I took care of my family. Plus, my daughter didn’t have to feel my stress. I’m sure you know the stress I’m talking about. When you know you gotta get back to work as soon as possible to keep the checks coming in. But my daughter was able to rest easy. Because she knew I’d be there as much as she needed me.
That lack of stress is priceless.
I make sure I don’t take it for granted. When I see or hear myself complaining about how the day is going, I just close my eyes and remember what it was like before. And here’s the thing, my System helps keep my business going so I don’t lose out on real (or potential) sales and profits. And that means my “time off” doesn’t mean income stops. Winner, winner…steak dinner.
