Build business relationships better
Bob (not his real name) discovered he had missed a deadline with one of his prospective customers. Her paperwork had been misplaced, and by the time he found it, he couldn’t get the estimate to her in the timeframe he promised. But instead of coming up with a story to hide his mistake, Bob decided to email his customer and tell her the truth. It was a risk. But he knew it’s a bigger risk to build business relationships on lies. It worked out well, but that part of the story is a secret.
Build business relationships with apologies when needed.
Bob (again, not his real name) showed me the email he wrote to his prospective customer. As I read it, I could see he was completely honest about misplacing her information. And he let her know he’d understand if she was no longer interested. But he offered sincere apologies…and said he’d make it up to her if she still wanted to go forward. He asked if I thought it would be the right approach. Of course, I told him you can never go wrong by telling the truth.
Also…when you’re open and honest like that, it shows you’re human. With human weaknesses. Letting down your armor and admitting to those weaknesses can help build business relationships better. Because it shows you don’t consider yourself more important or valuable than those you serve. And that builds trust. And trust is the foundation of all relationships…including in business.
Sharing the reality of your day might not be easy at first. You might see some other business owner, seemingly more successful, and think they’ve got it all together. But you might be amazed at what goes on behind the scenes in their organization. Then again…you’ve got a lot going on behind the scenes, too. No wonder there’s an occasional missed phone call, email, or text. Right? But you can always show you truly DO care by going that extra mile.
