A friend of mine told me about how efficient his German mother-in-law was. And when I say German, I mean born in Germany, raised during the time of Hitler, and kept her accent even after 60+ years in America. Apparently she was a model for German efficiency. And with eight kids, it’s no wonder she knew how to make a schedule and keep to it.
Could you make a schedule for eight kids and a husband?
These days, that’s almost inconceivable for most moms. Because most moms can’t even imagine having eight kids…much less planning out the daily routine for that many.
But my friend said his mother-in-law would get up before everyone else in the house. And she’d make breakfast for her husband and send him off to work. Then, she’d get dinner started. Even before she got the kids up and started making their breakfast.
And then, she went to the bedrooms, snapped out the wake up orders, and headed back to the kitchen. Once the little troupe was dressed, fed, and sent off to school, this five foot two inch one hundred ten pound woman went back to the kitchen. Because she had to make sure the evening meal was on schedule.
Once she made that kitchen check, she’d work her way through the rooms of the house for cleaning. Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and scrubbing. And only after all that was done did she take a break.
She made sure to get in her afternoon “alone time” with pound cake and coffee.
But after about 20 to 30 minutes, it was time to get back in the kitchen and finish the rest of the evening meal prep. And we’re not talking about sandwiches and potato chips. My friend said there’d be full meals with all the trimmings. Good German food like sauerbraten (which takes a lot of planning all on its own) and side dishes of fresh cut cucumbers and tomatoes. And special mashed potatoes. Maybe even homemade bread.
And I’m told she made the absolute best cheesecake…from scratch.
Wow. I’m tired just sharing the story. Where’s my pound cake and coffee?
Anyway…the reason I bring it up is to point out how important it is to keep your day, your life, and (of course) your business schedule under control. Because if you don’t control your day, it’s for sure it’ll wear you down.
