It’s funny how Labor Day isn’t actually a workday for so many people. And the whole first Monday weekend in September is like that. But I’m not complaining. Far from it. I enjoy a nice, extra day off with my family and friends as much as the next person.

And, no, that doesn’t make me a workaholic. Because, as I said, I’m never opposed to an extra day (or even week or two) at the beach. Or relaxing at home.

I still think it’s funny how when Labor Day weekend arrives, most people don’t labor. Unless you believe all the grocery shopping, grill prepping, and boat cleaning don’t count as labor.

Does that sound like your Labor Day weekend?

Or are you one of those so-called entrepreneurs or business owners who actually run a business even on Labor Day weekend. And, if that’s you, I salute you. Matter of fact, I join you. Because the pursuit of success doesn’t get all the days off that others get. Right?

But why do we even have Labor Day?

Well, here’s what I found out about it, directly from a government web page:

“The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.”

So, almost 140 years later, here we are, America. Labor Day weekend 2023.

I’m sure some have decided to go ahead and make it a four day weekend. And they’re probably at the store, right now, picking up some extra burgers and hot dogs and mucho bags of chips. I’m sure there aren’t any people I know who are adding adult beverages to the list. But I hear some people do.

Regardless of how you celebrate, I hope it’s a safe weekend for you.

And even if you’re a highly driven entrepreneur or business owner, maybe give yourself at least a little break. C’mon, what’s a few hours away from work gonna hurt? And you’ve been working hard. Right? So, don’t feel guilty for rewarding yourself with some chill time.

As for me, I might be chillin’ and grillin’. Or I might be doin’ something else thrillin’. But no matter what it is, I won’t forget that my days of labor made my choices possible.

OK, with that headline I’m ready to cozy up on the couch with a nice movie. But I’m here to help YOU. So, that’ll have to wait. Now, I don’t if there are any statistics to back me up on it. But I bet most new business owners start out with a service-based business. Because it makes sense to use your skills to serve others. But I bet the most successful CEO’s would tell you to provide products AND services.

So, you might wonder how YOU can offer products and services.

My products have been my business-building courses and book. But every industry is different. So processes, ideas, and results will vary.

But according to an author on the subject, many service-based businesses will “fail and waste a lot of money in the process,” when it comes to developing products. And that’s despite the fact that “more and more traditional professional services firms are turning to ‘productization’ as a strategy to grow, improve valuations, and to fend off new digital-first competitors.”

So, there are ways to speed up your business growth AND avoid the mistakes most business owners make.

I think it’s a great idea to create products and services you can scale up to build a business that can take care of you. So, of course, I think it’s also a great idea to learn proven “tactics so you don’t have to start from scratch.”

And anytime you can improve your business without reinventing the wheel, go for it, if the information applies to YOU.

I saw a bullet list about how to “productize” your business.

It’s a good list. But I think I’d rearrange it a little. Because the item that was fourth on the list is the one I’d put first. “Ensure there’s a viable market for your product idea.”

And then you definitely should:

  • Inexpensively test your ideas before investing in development
  • Figure out how much money to invest in exploring and building products
  • Shift your culture to embrace a product-mindset
  • Figure out if you have the skills or if you need to hire others who do
  • Inspire and reward your sales team so you can more sure of commercial success

Yep, I certainly recommend you remember these pointers. And even get a book to help you when you get to the point of adding products to your services.

But, as I keep saying to anyone who’s just starting out (or thinking about it), make sure you have a clear Vision of your future. Or at least the future you want to work toward.

Franchise business yays and nays

OK, let’s say, for the sake of discussion, that you love the idea of being your own boss. But you’re not sure you’d even make a good boss. You’ve got some concepts floating around in your head. But you just don’t know if any of them could or would be worth pursuing. In other words, you just don’t know what you just don’t know. I get it. Most every business owner could relate to that on some level. And, for some like that, a franchise business can make a lot of sense.

There are certainly some key advantages to a franchise business.

Most of the time you don’t have to have any particular industry experience to “buy” a franchise business. Because you’re actually investing into an established business. And the franchisor (the one who owns the established business) provides you the training you’ll need to succeed with your franchise. And when you jump into “owning a business” this way, it’s an opportunity to figure out if it’s the right thing for YOU.

A big advantage to a franchise business is that you’ll already have a customer base that knows your brand. That’s a huge obstacle to people who start their own businesses from scratch. An established and loyal customer base can be worth its weight in gold. Because they help you operate in the black much faster. And established brand recognition usually makes it easier to hire the best talent.

Also, if you break out into a cold sweat at the thought of all the risk involved with starting a new business, a franchise could help you cool down. Because the franchisor, for the most part, has already worked out the kinks. And you’ll simply learn what works and follow their proven process.

And that brings up another advantage.

Franchisors want you (and need you) to understand how their business works. All the nuts and bolts. So, the best ones support you all the way. And they can help you build your CEO skills probably even to the point of knowing how to open your own business. If and when you decide that’s for you.

One more advantage to a franchise business is that you might be able to “invest” into more locations. Because franchisors make more when you make more. And if you prove you’re a valuable asset with one location, they’ll most likely support you in more.

But before you dive in, consider the possible downsides.

Yeah, you knew there had to be a catch. Right? Now, don’t think of it like that. Remember, there are potent downsides to any venture. So, some of these possible disadvantages can also be true for your own ideas.

First, you have to consider possible location limitations. And market saturation in some areas. Because if there are 25 pizza joints in a city block, even an established pizza brand is gonna struggle.

Then, there are the regulations. You’ll have less control. Because, ultimately, the franchisor is the actual owner of the business. And they get to make and set the policies and procedures. So, if you don’t like the idea of being told what to do at every turn, this could be a deal breaker.

Also, your profit margins will be less. Because you’ll have to pay the franchisor their portion. It’s not as though you made a deal with the mafia. But it makes sense that they’ll want their cut for giving you the opportunity and the training.

Next, be sure you understand that there’ll be much less financial privacy. Because you have to share information with the franchisor. After all, you’re actually an extension of THEIR business. So, they need to know what’s going on in “the books.”

Some franchise business owners have gone to court with franchisors for a variety of reasons. This could come into play if you discover, after you’ve committed, that a franchisor is, shall we say, a little shady. So, be aware, as much as possible, of what you’re getting into so you can avoid the hassles.

Finally, the Big Two disadvantages.

Some franchise opportunities come with a high price tag. For example, some sources say you have to have $500,000 to open a McDonald’s franchise. And that can’t be borrowed money. Yikes! Do you have that much lying around? Plus, even if you DO comes up with the high costs, you will have little room for creativity and innovation. Nope. You’ll need to follow the tried and true process.

OK, all that being said, I don’t recommend FOR or AGAINST a franchise business. Because it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. But I DO recommend you have a clear Vision for where (and how) you want your life to go. Because if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?

No, this isn’t about how to start your own farm or ranch. In fact, most of what I’m talking about, right now, is aimed at you only if you’re already running a profitable business. But, it’s also good information if you hope to have one of those cash cows you’ve heard so much about.

You HAVE heard of those cash cows. Right?

Those are the businesses that just seem to effortlessly bring in more than enough money for everyone involved. Like Amazon, Apple, Coke, and Google. Maybe you’ve heard of them?

The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren’t always logical.” And it went on to say how the author “has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales – Profit = Expenses.”

Then it made the comparison of “the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates.” It said the author show “that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows.”

And the blurb included these bullet points:

  • Following 4 simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances.
  • A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line.
  • Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth.

The information I saw said the author includes “dozens of case studies, practical, step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humor.”

It sounds like something definitely worth looking into. Because sometimes flipped formulas are just what the business doctor ordered.

And then again, the tried and true should never be stuffed into some dusty business closet. Especially when it has proved to help business owners ramp up their earnings from 5 figures to 6, and from 6 figures to 7. Which, by chance (NOT) my RondaReady System has done many times over.

I read, somewhere, that over 60 billion online messages are “sent out” on a wide variety of platforms every day. A lot of them are social media posts for followers and fans. And many others are for marketing.

So, how will your followers and fans ever see your messages?

With all those distractions, how can you even attract any followers and fans? And is it even important?

Well, it’s important enough that authors write books on how to get followers and fans. And even clients and customers. They say they wanna help you “gain mass exposure.”

It certainly makes sense. Because if no one knows you exist, do you really have a business?

So, you’ll hear social media experts tell you that using social media to build an audience and/or a business is no longer an option. And they say they can help you understand which platforms YOU should be on. They even claim to be able to help you “beat the algorithms.”

I’m not sure anyone can do that since algorithms change all the time. But far be it from me to take the wind out of their sales, I mean sails.

Especially when they claim to have clients like Taylor Swift and Rihanna. And when they claim to have worked with brands like IKEA, MTV, and Skechers. I mean, obviously you gotta have the chops if you sign major brands as clients.

But, I’m curious. Do you think even someone with those credentials could truly show you how to be a “digital strategist” or “growth hacker” in  “30 days or less?”

I’m not saying it’s impossible. But it sounds a little over the top. Think about it. Those brands I mentioned did a lot of the leg work, probably a long time before they ever worked with so-called social media strategists. And that might not be true for newer brands. But I think it’s important to note nevertheless.

Tools for influence have their place.

And if you’re struggling to get any attention for your products, services, and information, a social media expert can probably help. But don’t think you can go from a “no-name into a top influencer” without putting your System together first.

Before you focus on how to “make a significant impact in the digital world and stand out among all the noise” you need your System. And before you focus on getting your mug on camera or “publishing a popular blog” put YOUR System together.

Yeah, it’s all the rage right now. And if you haven’t already read about or heard of Chat GPT, you soon will. Sounds like it’ll do just about anything you need besides clean the oven and take out the trash. But, who knows, that might be coming. Most people use it to replace content producers. But I believe that’s where the best Chat GPT alternative truly is.

Before I explain the Chat GPT alternative thing, check this out.

I found a resource where someone (and can we really be sure there IS a real someone?) made this bold claim. There’s a headline that says “This is the simplest guide on how to make money quickly and easily with ChatGPT.” And it also claims it includes the latest version.

The author of the book (again, is it a real person or actually AI?) says you’ll learn “the secrets of how to create passive income sources that keep on giving, in minutes.”

That’s a pretty bold claim. Learning income producing secrets in minutes. But it gets bolder.

Because you’ll also learn how to “research, create, and promote engaging content in seconds.” And just for good measure the word “seriously” is added in parentheses. So, apparently it’s a bold claim, but serious.

But, forget about minutes. And forget about seconds. Let’s go for nothing. Yes, the next bullet point said you’ll be able to “Impress your customers by getting their projects finished extremely fast with high quality (with zero effort!)”

Just imagine! ZERO effort. Who wouldn’t want that superpower? Especially when the benefit of that means you’ll be able to “Get time back to focus on what really matters.”

Believe me, I’m a huge fan of you being able to focus on what matters.

But, c’mon. Zero effort?

No, basically that’s impossible. At least if you wanna control your empire instead of it controlling YOU.

Look, I get the appeal. I mean, read this next paragraph and see if you don’t feel compelled to go all in on Chat GPT:

“We currently live in a world where businesses are paying hundreds of dollars to people for writing engaging articles and blogs. And thousands of dollars per month for social media marketing and SEO. Now, using ChatGPT, anyone, including you, can do this really well. Even if you have no experience in this! Most businesses are not aware of or are not using this right now. And that’s where you can come in and undercut existing providers while doing almost zero work. And I will show you how step-by-step. With instructions you can copy and paste. This market may become saturated a year from now. But this is the right time to start!”

OK, a quick side note. Did you notice the phrase “while doing almost zero work?” Yep. It didn’t take long to go from zero effort to “almost zero work.” Almost is a very gray amount of time. Don’t you think? I sure do.

But let’s forget all that. And let’s talk about a better Chat GPT alternative.

And that would be YOU. Or at least a real human being you delegate to take your place at the content production computer.

Because no matter how great a job artificial intelligence is ever able to do on creating content, it will ALWAYS fall short of real human emotions and contact.

And, ultimately, Chat GPT can only be as good as those who program it. I know they’ll tell you it can “learn” and “get better.” But NOT without human help. Because artificial intelligence doesn’t actually know things. It only reproduces what is knowable by humans.

Alright, I know I’m starting to sound philosophical. But it’s only because I know the value of real human relationships is irreplaceable. And I want you to be the best, most successful YOU possible.

Yes, it’s true. According to stats, if you can trust them, most small businesses fail. Not break. Not falter. And not stumble. They fail. Ouch! That reality is like a slap in the face. Right? So, might as well forget your dream of starting your own business, if that was on your mind.

But according to one author, small businesses fail because they’re startups.

Sounds intimidating. Because how can you start a new business without it being a startup. The author says his book deals with the startup problem. He said “we haven’t engineered a better way to start…until now.”

Then, he said you can “skip the startup phase and generate profitable revenue on day one.”  And he said he can show you “how to begin with a sustainable, profitable company and grow from there.”

It certainly sounds interesting. Because there are no guarantees when you start a business. So, if someone has an idea of how to help you skip certain obstacles and hit the ground running, it’s worth looking into.

In his book, he claims to teach you how to “buy an existing company rather than starting from scratch.” And he says that’s how you can “use ownership as a path to financial independence.” Plus, he says his method can help you spend a fraction of the time raising capital,” if you need that.

And since most small businesses fail because of money problems, that’s pretty important.

You should probably keep options like this in mind.

I mean, what if you could “uncover the best opportunities and biggest risks of any company,” as the author says he help you do? That would have to be a huge advantage. Because if you’re gonna buy a business someone else made it through the startup phase with, you’re gonna wanna know what works or doesn’t.

His system is supposed to help you “navigate the acquisition process.” And there’s nothing better than a guide to help you find your way in uncharted territories.

Yes, it all sounds very helpful.

But you still need a Vision for your life. Because even if you’re not gonna start from scratch (and obviously you don’t have to), you still need to know where you wanna go.

Imagine yourself deep in thought. And your thoughts seem to transport you out of your body and into the air. Then, in the blink of an eye, you realize you’re sitting in a wifi café, in the middle of a conversation with a gray-haired stranger. And the gray-haired stranger asks…

“Did you think you would get here in the blink of an eye?”

And you have no idea what the stranger is talking about. Because you’re unsure of the whole scene. Questions pop into your brain like champagne bubbles. Who IS this stranger? Where IS this place? And how DID I get here? And was it really in the blink of an eye?

Well, maybe it WAS a blink. Because one second you’re just peacefully pondering your life. And the next you’re confronted by someone you don’t recognize. In a place you’ve never seen before.

But, as your dazed and confused mind tries to sort things out, the stranger says, “Bet you never thought you’d be here did you? And I bet you’re probably wondering where here is and how you got here. Am I right?”

Before you can even form your lips to speak the first word of your reply, the stranger says, “Of course you’re wondering where you are and how you got here. Everybody wonders that when they first get here. And I suppose it’s only natural. Because you never pictured yourself in a place like this.”

And, with that last sentence, the stranger’s hand motions around the dark gray walls. That’s when you notice. There’s no art on the walls. And no music in the background. In fact, except for the stranger and the black table between you, there’s nothing else in the room.

So, you turn back to the stranger to ask what’s going on. But once again, before you can form the words, you hear these words, “You should go back while you still can.”

Then, your words come gushing out without you even having to think them,

“Go back while I still can?!

What does that mean? Go back where? I was sitting at home, thinking, and not bothering anybody. Then, suddenly I was here, listening to you ask me senseless questions. In a room that doesn’t make any sense! And why did you say while I still can?”

The stranger nods, ever so slightly, and then you notice the eyes. There’s something about the eyes. Something terrifyingly familiar about the eyes.

And then it dawns on you.

The.

Stranger’s.

Eyes.

Are.

YOURS!

You realize you’re staring directly into your own eyes, into your own future.

And the future is noticeably bleak.

Then, the stranger (who starts to look more and more like an old version of YOU) says, “You should know. You don’t actually have to be here. In fact, you could leave this place just as fast as you got here. Yeah, you could be gone in the blink of an eye.”

And you answer, “Really? How?”

And you (uh, I mean the stranger…no, it IS you) answer back:

“Close your eyes, find your Vision, and GO!”

Then, before you even have a chance to say anything else, you suddenly open your eyes. And you’re right back in your comfy chair. But with one nagging question in your head.

“How do I find my Vision and GO?”

I read a quote, from the author of a business advice book, that I thought was profound and simple. Profound because the quote addressed facts in a totally understandable way. And simple because he just shared his belief and why.

“I’m all about keeping things simple. I believe structure is important until it becomes bureaucratic. I value data and wish people would stick to the facts, not taking things so personally. It’s only work. And I think patience and perseverance are undervalued in a world addicted to instant gratification. I have an appreciation for curiosity and love a good debate. And I believe your business will be successful if you bring smart people with high integrity together and let them do their thing.”

See what I mean? Totally understandable.

I think the book was about keeping a minimalist perspective. And that’s another way of saying what you probably heard before. The K.I.S.S. approach. Keep It Super Simple. Or, the tougher-nosed ones might tell you to Keep It Simple, Stupid. Different strokes I guess.

The point is, why complicate things? Especially when complications don’t lead to success. Most often, successful people are the ones who KISSed their business. And KISSed their ideas. And, most importantly, they KISSed their Vision.

Walt Disney didn’t start with Disneyland, Disneyworld, and Disney Studios. No, he started with a drawing of a mouse. AND a vision of what he wanted to do with that drawing.

Steve Jobs didn’t start out as a billionaire owner of a hugely successful computer and phone designer. No, his initial vision was to make devices push-button easy to use.

It’s totally understandable to me that you might have a bunch of good ideas. And that you might believe you can wow the world with them. But I know, from experience, that you’ve gotta have more than good ideas. Yeah, you’ve gotta have a vision for what you wanna do with them.
