You probably already know. But I’m gonna tell you anyway. These days you can build a business from just about anywhere your little heart desires. And you can design a lifestyle around your unique preferences. You can even be a digital nomad if that’s your thing.

A digital nomad lifestyle can be very appealing.

I admit I put on my imagination cap and see myself traveling all around with my laptop. And all I have to do is stop somewhere and tap into some wifi and get my work done.

There are even books to help you figure out how to be a digital nomad. I received an ad for one that said the author would help you

  • “Sell your existing knowledge and skills to earn enough to work and live anywhere,
  • Build a profitable online business from your laptop that creates real impact in the world,
  • Use online tools, social media and outsourcing to give you more time, money and freedom,
  • Travel the world for less and experience the joys of minimalism, and
  • Live life on your own terms and create your ideal lifestyle.”

What do you think? Do those bullet points push any buttons? Or tug on wanderlust strings?

Something else I liked about the ad I saw for that book. It didn’t promise you’d just be able to set up a few things and then sit back to watch your money flow in.

No, the ad also said you’d need a certain mindset.

Coincidentally it said there were three stages to that. I say, coincidentally, because my RondaReady System works in three stages. And the ad said you’d need ” the nuts and bolts of setting up an online business you love and the blueprint to create your ideal lifestyle.”

Apparently the writer of the book left a high-paying job in the corporate world (sounds familiar again), started a blog, and cofound a technology company. Then, after 18 months, she left that company to start her own business. And she said that “involved flying to Argentina to eat empanadas, play Ultimate Frisbee, and launch her first digital product.”

Still not the digital nomad stuff. But certainly living on her own terms. And fast forward to the present, and she IS living the nomad part. The blurb I read said “she now runs a multiple six-figure business from her laptop, while living out of a suitcase, and teaching entrepreneurs worldwide to build a business and lifestyle they love.”

Basically, her book runs parallel with my RondaReady System book.

You don’t have to look very long to find lots of advice for starting a business. And it’s great that so many who’ve gone before you are willing to share some of what they know. But most of that advice doesn’t include what to do after that. Oh sure, you’ll get plenty of superfluous recommendations like:

  • Provide great service
  • Be willing to make sacrifices
  • Remember consistency and persistence

But starting a business is just the tip of the iceberg.

And most advice articles will tell you that your work has just begun after starting a business. Then, they’ll tell you that you’ll probably work harder for yourself than you ever did for “the man.” And that, of course, means you very likely won’t get to spend as much time with friends and loved ones as you’d like.

Those points are all true.

They’ll emphasize the importance of great customer service. And they might even share examples of how that’ll make customers (and clients) more likely to wanna do more business with you. Because you paid more attention to them than your competition did.

And that’s certainly true.

And, naturally, we can’t leave out the persistence part. So, the other advice you’ll find everywhere will almost always say stuff like, “keep doing what’s necessary to be successful.” Or something like, “create long-term positive habits that can help you make money for the long run.”

Well, I certainly can’t (and won’t) argue with the general concept of that advice. But let’s look at all that advice from the perspective of a newbie. Because I think it brings up more questions than it provides solutions.

So you’re probably gonna work harder for yourself than “the man.” OK. Doing what? And, sure, customer service is crucial. But, do you have any customer service tips for MY industry? Then, you say to “keep doing what’s necessary to be successful.” But any ideas what’s necessary? Those would be helpful. And what kind of “long-term positive habits can help you make money for the long run?”

Yeah, wouldn’t some specifics be mighty helpful?

I saw an article that attempted to answer the question, “What is the fastest way for a business to grow?” And I didn’t find their answer to be all that helpful. They said:

“There are some aspects to running lean that may help a business grow quickly. Such as focusing on a small product line, scaling up instead of scaling down, and providing some sort of obvious edge over your competitors.”

Again, that just brings up questions in my mind. What do you mean “scaling up instead of scaling down?” And how do you find an “obvious edge over your competitors?”

And this subject popped into my head when I recently read a headline that said, “23 Pro Tips for Running a Successful Business.” Of course, being a business management consultant, I thought I’d make a quick scan of the tips.

And, as I figured, the old how and what difference was clear.

When you choose to run a business, and you’re looking for advice, you don’t want a laundry list of WHAT to do. You wanna know HOW to do it. Sure, you need ingredients to bake cookies. But it’s way more important to know how to put those ingredients together. And how to lay them out on a pan. And how long to bake ’em. OK, now I’m craving cookies. Great analogy, Ronda. Excuse while I make a bakery shop run.

And what you’ll find, so often, in those bullet point tips for running a business, is information that leaves out two key points.

  1. Is there even a market for the business you wanna run?
  2. What’s your long-term (and even lifelong) Vision?

And those two points could even be reversed. Because if you don’t even know what your Vision is, you certainly won’t care about the market out there in the big, bad world.

Plus, if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there. And that’s IF you get there. Yeah, there’s nothing like a clear Vision. For YOU and your business.

But the main thing is, avoid extended exposure to  bad attitudes and negativity. And spend your extra time getting that clear Vision I mentioned before.

You have lots more options, these days, when it comes to figuring out what you’re gonna do with your life. College. Business school. Trade schools. Online certification. Money CAN buy happiness. Yep, I just found that out today. I know you’ve always heard it couldn’t. But I’m here to tell you it can. And I have educational proof to back me up.

Uh-huh. Harvard University says money can buy happiness.

Well, I guess that’s not exactly true. Because I couldn’t find a quote where they actually came out and said, “Money can buy happiness.” But they have a course on how to manage your happiness. And it’ll cost you $229 if you wanna get certified.

I’m not making this up.

They DO have a free option. If you just wanna sit in, or “audit” the class, you can do that for free. But why would you wanna go through a whole happiness management course and not be certified? That’d be weird.

Here’s their description of how the course works:

How can you calculate the business book value of a title or author you never heard of? Well, here’s a hint. The value isn’t in the title. And it’s not in the place where you buy it.

True business book value starts with author experience.

And it finishes with YOU.

At least it does if and when you finish the book AND actually use the knowledge.

A friend of mine coined a phrase: “Education without application leads to a continuation of frustration.” Because if you don’t use what you learn, why invest your time in learning it? There’s no return on your most valuable investment asset. Your time.

I read an article by a business guy who shared HOW to read business books. You might not think there are different ways. But you’d be wrong. Because HOW you read a business book can make or break what you get out of it, if anything.

He wrote:

“A business book isn’t supposed to tell you what to think; it’s supposed to teach you how to think. It provides a lens through which to frame, interpret, and solve a problem. Once you’ve absorbed a concept, argument, theory, or tool, find a use case to apply what you’ve learned. Until you apply it, a concept remains an untested hypothesis. For example, early in my management career, I read this statement from Peter Drucker’s The Effective Executive: ‘The truly important events on the outside are not the trends. They are changes in the trends.’ I took that concept back to our strategic planning team and we incorporated the practice of inflection-point spotting instead of trend spotting. That insight was enormously helpful in practice.”

Then, he shared the anatomy of a typical business book:

  • Concepts (key ideas)
  • Numbers (data and statistics)
  • Tools (frameworks and diagnostics)
  • Examples (stories and case studies to illustrate application)

And he said to “consider that three groups of people write business books:

  1. Practitioners: Leaders and founders who practice business and share their experience.
  2. Researchers: Scholars and academics who analyze data, test hypotheses, and create new theories.
  3. Advisors: Consultants and domain experts who advise those who practice business. Advisors tend to straddle the worlds of theory and practice.

OK. I’ve written a business book that’s based on my highly successful RondaReady System. So, I guess I’m included somewhere in each of those three groups. Because I’ve certainly put my System into practice. And I’ve analyzed data, tested hypotheses, and applied new theories.

So, while none of that makes me a New York Times bestselling author, it does add some credibility to what I say and offer.

And I think that ties in nicely with my recommendation to clearly define your Vision before you start a business. Create a roadmap. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?

I read an article that said how much they enjoyed what Jim Carrey said in a commencement speech address. And they added his quote, “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer.”

It was one of those articles that talked about the trendy idea that you need to find your why.

And it pointed out that rich and famous isn’t a good why.

Because, the article said, it just might not be sustainable. Or even realistic.

And I’d add this. To be rich and famous isn’t actually anyone’s bottom line why. Think about it. Do you really just want a bunch of money? I mean, if that was all it took to be happy, then there wouldn’t be so many unhappy millionaires and billionaires.

My guess is, most people don’t want the money. They want what money can buy.

There’s a funny line Bernadette Peters, from the movie, The Jerk, says after she discovers that Steve Martin’s character has lost their fortune. He tells her he’s sorry they don’t have any money. And she says, “I don’t care about losing all the money…it’s losing all the stuff.”

Yeah, it’s pretty much impossible to think about getting all cozy with a pile of cash. But having a comfortable place to live, a decent car, plenty of good food to eat, and all your needs met? Now THAT’S more like it. Right?

So, my recommendation is that you learn to run your own business.

And, in my opinion, it’s the BEST way to get “all the stuff.”

Of course, when you first start out in the business owner and entrepreneur world, you might not have oodles of capital to invest in business building courses.

That’s a description of Apple Vision Pro. And they go on to say, “A singular piece of three-dimensionally formed laminated glass flows into an aluminum alloy frame that gently curves to wrap around your face. And an array of advanced cameras and sensors work together to let you see the world clearly, understand your environment, and detect hand input.”

Have you seen the Apple Vision Pro? If not, your future is calling. And it looks pretty exciting.

Then there’s this info I read that talked about how generative AI (artificial intelligence) might level the playing field when it comes to using data. The article said, “Giving team members the ability to query data using natural language prompts, or easily generate code outside of immediate domain expertise, has the potential to simplify and accelerate IT operations. And this can have enormous ramifications, lowering barriers to entry to many types of modern practices.”

Spatial computing. Artificial Intelligence. Sounds like the future.

But it’s here. NOW.

And that, once again, spells opportunity.

And savvy entrepreneurs, all over the world, will jump on it. Some will even run entire businesses with those new technological tools.

Yeah, the $25.5 million price tag is no obstacle for the right powerball winner.

Matter of fact, if you’re a powerball winner of a drawing that’s almost $2 billion, you can toss in an outdoor infinity pool and fireplace enclosed in glass walls. Pretty cool, right?

But why stop there?

According to a report in the New York Post, Edwin Castro took the lump sum option as a $2 billion powerball winner. And so his take home came out to just short of $1 billion. Not bad for a guy who was living in a one bedroom place before he won.

So, not only did Mr. Castro buy that mansion I already described, but he got a second mansion for $4 million. That one’s in his hometown, Altadena, California. Supposedly it has a pool, a movie theater, five bedrooms, and four bathrooms. And it has views of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Wow, that’s a total of 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. I guess mega rich people need to sleep and tend to bathroom needs more than the average Joe and Jane.

I almost forgot. Mr. Castro also bought a “vintage white Porsche for $250,000.” For those keeping score, that’s a quarter of million dollars. For. A. Car!

But not to worry.

Because Mr. Castro apparently hired a round-the-clock security team.

So, as you can clearly see, all you need, in order to join the rich and famous, is to become a powerball winner. And just about any adult can play. So, the riches are ripe for the picking. But there’s a slight catch.

You gotta win. And be the only winner. And the odds of that are worse than getting struck by lightning.

But the alternative ways to get rich (or at least financially well off) pretty much all require work.

And I probably don’t have to tell you this. But that’s not nearly as “sexy.” Because it’s…well…work. Yeah, it’s more difficult. Not instantaneous. It requires focus. Persistence. And, most of all, a commitment to your Vision.
