A few years ago I talked about how thoughts become things. And I shared this quote from Ralph Waldo Trine: “Thoughts are forces.” That’s all true. So, starting today, think yourself happy.

Because you’ve got a lot of power stored in your brain. And it needs to be unleashed and set free. But one thing you shouldn’t do is bog all that power down with whatever keeps you where you are.

Of course, just because you think yourself happy doesn’t mean it’ll happen.

But it’s absolutely the place to start.

Maybe you build houses. Or provide invaluable repair services. Or share technology information in a way no one else can. Regardless of what skills and talents you have, you owe it to yourself (and your audience, or customers, or clients) to focus on what only YOU can do. Because it helps you be happy.

And it helps them be happy to work with you.

Do you have any friends or family who wouldn’t want you to be happy? Of course not. You might have some competitors who don’t care if you are or not. But they don’t matter. Point is, those who matter want you to be happy.

And “those who matter” should include you.

Wanna make a good impression? Good. Wanna make an impressive impression by doing something almost none of your competitors will do? Even better. And books for entrepreneurs is a powerful way to do that.

But I don’t mean books for entrepreneurs you find in the self-help section.

No, I mean the books that work FOR entrepreneurs. Because the entrepreneurs are the authors. Wow, I just used the word “entrepreneurs” five times. And I’m just getting warmed up.

Seriously, if you wanna stand out from your competition, write and publish a book. It’s a great way to establish authority and credibility. Because writing and publishing a book isn’t easy. If it was, everybody would do it. And they’re not. So, again. Wanna make an impressive impression on your potential clients and customers?

Then show them you’ve got the dedication, know-how, and persistence to complete even the most difficult work. Show them you’re an expert in your field. High-value clients and customers will understand, at least on some level, what it took for you to write and publish your book. And they’re more likely to believe you can help solve problems.

Your book (or books) can be a hundred times more valuable than business cards. Especially if it spotlights your abilities to provide solutions for business owners and wannabes. Plus, when your book includes your story, how you got where you are and why, they can start to sort of feel like they know you. And you remember that old saying, “People do business with those they know, like, and trust.”

And books for entrepreneurs can be great branding tools.

Think of your favorite, high-profile, “guru.”

I’ll bet the second you think of them, you see or remember something about them that stands out. Right? Someone who comes to my mind is Kevin O’leary, from the show Shark Tank. And what do they call him? Mr. Wonderful.

Yeah, that’s brand recognition with the added bonus of being entertaining.

And if and when you can put that sort of package together, you could just become unstoppable. And to think, it all started with a book.

Here’s something Entrepreneur Magazine said about the power of books for entrepreneurs: “…books can serve as powerful tools for building relationships. A book that offers tangible value in the form of actionable advice, valuable insights, or fresh perspectives can serve as a magnet for potential clients. By engaging readers and encouraging them to think differently, a book opens the door to further discussions, networking opportunities, and, ultimately, the establishment of meaningful connections with potential high-value clients.”

One band that was hugely popular from the 70’s all the way up to maybe even now is Chicago. And they had a big hit in 1972 (way too far back for me to even remember) with a song called “Saturday In The Park.” It popped up in a video feed I saw, recently, and I gotta say it’s very catchy.

Robert Lamm, who wrote Saturday In The Park, described his writing process:

“It was written as I was looking at footage from a film I shot in Central Park, over a couple of years, back in the early ‘70s. I shot this film and somewhere down the line I edited it into some kind of a narrative. And as I watched the film I jotted down some ideas based on what I was seeing and had experienced. And it was really kind of that peace and love thing that happened in Central Park and in many parks all over the world. Perhaps on a Saturday, where people just relax and enjoy each other’s presence. And the activities we observe and the feelings we get from feeling a part of a day like that.”

I don’t know about you, but I can almost see myself in that park.

It sounds funny to say. But artificial intelligence is a real thing now. And if you’re a young person who’s just heading out in to the real world, you might find it more than a little bit interesting how many jobs are related to it.

I just saw this headline about artificial intelligence:

“U.S. companies are on a hiring spree for A.I. jobs. And they pay an average of $146,000.”

Wow. That’s a pretty nice average. And here’s what the article, that went with that headline added:

“There were 7.6 million open jobs in the U.S. in June, according to the Adzuna database, with a growing share calling for AI skills: 169,045 jobs in the U.S. cited AI needs, and 3,575 called for generative AI work in particular.

Some of the most common jobs include tech roles you’d expect, like software engineer, product designer, deep learning architect and data scientist. But one fast-growing role where there’s ‘absolutely a shortage’ of qualified applicants is tax manager, says James Neave, Adzuna’s head of data science.”

Of course, those jobs don’t sound as glamorous as YouTube influencer or Tik Tok vid star. But my guess is they’ll be jobs you can sink your teeth into well after your youth and good looks fade. I know you might not think that’ll ever happen. But the reality is, it happens. To everybody.

I talk a lot about how to be a business owner. And how to run a business. And how to build your Vision much better and faster with the right System. But there are plenty of people who just don’t want to build a business. And that’s fine. Because not everybody’s cut out for all that requires.

If you’re one of those people, then at least get a high-paying job.

And apparently there are more and more of those in the world of artificial intelligence. In fact, that article I just quoted also said this about AI jobs:

“…have been around for decades but exploded in recent months as ChatGPT entered the scene in late 2022. Ever since, companies hoping to stay on the cusp of emerging technology have been desperate to hire people with skills to build the technology. And implement it into their workflows, such as by building chatbots to improve customer service or processing large amounts of data to make business decisions.”

Now, just because someone wrote an article about high-paying jobs in the world of artificial intelligence doesn’t mean you should start sending out tons of resumés. Especially if that work doesn’t sync with your vision. And if you’re not even sure what your vision is yet, that’s the place to start.

I read a college graduate’s story of how things went for him after graduation. He had dreams and ideas. And he knew he wanted to be a business owner instead of just finding a job. But he tried a few things that didn’t work. So, his story included why it’s important to keep going despite all that.

But I’ll let him share his advice for anyone who wants to be a business owner.

“So you had a dream about building a business. You came up with a great idea, you managed to turn it into a workable project and you released it to the market. 90% of the people with great ideas don’t even get this far. Heck, they don’t even dare to try it! And that’s a shame, because the world needs people who take risks, who try to change things… and who fail.

The real question is: do you know why it failed? Can you point out mistakes that you made and learn from them? Perhaps you failed to research the market before you created your product. Perhaps you made a crucial mistake in keeping your finances under control. But the point is: identify the thing that went wrong. And take it as a lesson learned for next time.

Nobody succeeds all the time. So, if you never make mistakes and if you never fail, you’re playing it safe. And then you’re not learning. I mean: even Steve Jobs failed when he got kicked out of Apple. Do you think he went back to a 9 to 5 job, thinking he wasn’t good enough to build a business? Heck no! He started a new business that became so good, that Apple had to acquire it. And we all know the rest.

You succeeded at pursuing your dream. You gave it a great try. It didn’t work out the way you expected it. But the failure of the project doesn’t make you a failure. And if the experience made you a better person with better ideas, it is not a failure. I’m sure you’re gonna try again. And succeed.”

That’s great advice!

If you’re a young person who’s about ready to go out into the real world, just know it’s gonna take real skills. And vision. Because if you’re not sure where you’re going, how will you know when you get there. That’s like driving at night with the headlights off.

Back in the 40’s, 50’s, and even into the 60’s many young women would attend a finishing school after they completed high school. And those were places where a young woman would learn what it took to put their best foot forward. In life and their own homes. And one of the first things they learned was to “always look your best.”

If you ever find an old handbook from one of those schools, check out what it says about the criteria.

When they said always look your best, they meant from top to bottom.

One handbook I saw said, “if you want to always look your best, you’ll make sure your…

  • Hair is neatly styled,
  • Nails are perfectly manicured
  • Makeup is beautifully applied
  • Outfit, day or night, is picture-perfect.

And looking your best includes social etiquette and feeling confident in your appearance. The handbook said,”…as a confident woman is a happy woman.”

Then, of course, the handbook emphasized how you work on looking your best 24 hours a day. Sure, hairstyles, the right clothes, and good grooming are crucial. But what about the end of the day? It mentioned how it’s so easy to “pop on an oversized t-shirt and get into bed.” Then it followed up with the question, “Yes, it might be comfy, but does it make you feel good? It’s not about looking good for someone else, but it IS about being happy in yourself and feeling good in what you wear to bed.”

What do you think? Does that sound old-fashioned? Or just plain sensible?

OK, I’m not about to open and run my own official finishing school.

Let’s talk about power. No, not like the villains in all the Marvel movies lust for. I mean electric power. Because it’s literally everywhere these days. From toys to cars. You’re probably reading this on a device that depends on batteries. Right?

But electric power certainly isn’t a new concept.

Far from it. For example, Nikola Tesla (yeah, the guy who Elon Musk named his car company after) was hard at work on electric power ideas way back in the 1890’s. And he started thinking about it even earlier than that. I saw an article about Mr. Tesla on the History website. Here’s a blurb from the article:

“In the 1890s Tesla invented electric oscillators, meters, improved lights and the high-voltage transformer known as the Tesla coil. He also experimented with X-rays, gave short-range demonstrations of radio communication two years before Guglielmo Marconi and piloted a radio-controlled boat around a pool in Madison Square Garden. Together, Tesla and Westinghouse lit the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and partnered with General Electric to install AC generators at Niagara Falls, creating the first modern power station.”

I’m sure you have plenty of things plugged into AC power outlets right now. Yeah, we pretty much all do. And that system was championed by Mr. Tesla, too. There’s no doubt he was a man of great vision. He even spent some time in the Colorado Springs area, where I live, and you’ll see pictures of him all over as you drive around.

And the key point about Nikola is the vision part.

First, he’d get an idea. Then, he’d develop a concept. And finally, he’d figure out a system that worked. Or he’d show the ways that didn’t work. And that’s how he achieved some very cool stuff.

OK, I know this scenario doesn’t apply to at least half the people. But let’s say you’re a mom of four. And you’ve been a certified CPA for 25 years. But, now, you want more than just a CPA career. So, you research information about jobs from home. And you figure out a sort of hybrid solution. And you move your “job” into your home. A side-hustle blog that you build into a new full-time career.

Sounds pretty sweet. Right?

Half the people might think so anyway.

I’m talking about the women. Especially the moms. Or any females who like the idea of generating a full-time income from what they know.

But I’m willing to bet that the other half of the people, the men, wouldn’t be opposed to that same opportunity. And the scenario I described was based on a true story. I found it in an article about a women who created a blog focused on jobs from home. And she used her experience as a business owner, and mom running a busy home, to teach other moms how to do that, too.

Now, that’s what I call turning lemons into lemonade. Or cherries with no pits. Or one of those old sayings.

Point is…I can relate to her story about working and raising four daughters. Because I built my business while raising two daughters and a son.

OK, how about another scenario that highlights the other half of the people?

Let’s say you’re a guy who blogs full time. And your wife helps you save up enough money to go all in for it. And after some time and persistence your blog generates over $10,000 a month by helping people.

Do you think these are just stories about luck?

Sure, they were fortunate enough to find a market for their good ideas. But their “luck” is way more than that.

Because they both took the time to build their systems. And it definitely takes time. For some people it takes a LOT of time. Because they don’t know where to start. And they oftentimes don’t even know WHAT to start.

That’s why it’s so important to take time to System Think. And know who YOU are and what YOU want. Because that makes it so much easier (and faster) to make better choices and get better results.

Have you ever learned, or tried to learn, a language besides the one you grew up with? It’s a handy skill to have. In fact, there are people who get paid, pretty well, to be translators. Most people don’t stick with it, though.

And you can’t learn a language, from anybody, that way.

I saw a description of one language teaching company that showed their approach to it. It’s pretty cool. They said, “…uses the empirically-proven techniques created by curriculum experts. And they emphasize that you’ll learn to speak “like a local.” Then, they add, “***** also utilizes audio dialogue examples recorded with native speakers, so the language you learn is more accurate and at times, even colloquial. In addition to speaking and reading your new language, you’ll also learn about that language’s history, discover recipes, songs, and even meet new people along the way.”

Wow. That sounds like a much more enjoyable way to learn a language if you ask me. I realize you didn’t ask me. But if you did, I’d say that sounds like the way I’d go.

I think it’s so cool how we human beings want to connect so much we even take the time to learn other languages. And some of them are incredibly difficult (can you say “Mandarin?”).

But it’s crucial to connect. And communicate. And to stay in touch with others.

And business communication is no different.

But too many business owners and entrepreneurs take the time to get customers and clients and then fail to stay in touch with them after their first contact. So, up to 90% of sales disappear because they didn’t go to the next level.

So far there hasn’t been one. But hurricane season is in full swing again. I have a friend who moved down near the Gulf Coast last year. And he told me about what most residents dread the most when a hurricane hits. And it’s the big three: when they lose air conditioning (and refrigeration), lose access to good water, and lose touch.

Meteorologists and weather services always talk about the possible damage to property, trees, and crops. And they warn of wind gusts, coastal flooding, and pier damage. Things like that.

But what about the lose touch part?

Because loved ones and friends, who live in other parts of the country, need and want to hear from you when they know you’re in harm’s way. And when phone lines and internet connections go down, and they lose touch with you, hours can feel like days.

You’re probably like me. We take the communication device in our pocket for granted. Because it’s so easy to just pop it out, check messages, text somebody, and scroll through the web. So you don’t even think about it. Right? Until something happens and you can’t use it.

Then, suddenly, it’s like a category 5 hurricane just hit. Wind damage whirls through your head. Thoughts about what you’re missing flood your brain. And the loss of connection is like rampant beach erosion.

And all you can do is ride out the storm till connections are restored.

And the wave of relief that rolls over you is like a day at the beach.

Am I right?
