Ok, this is for parents with kids who are about to go out into the real world on their own. If that’s not you, it might not interest you. Unless you ARE one of those young people heading out there. Because this affects you, too. And, parents, I’m talking about what motivates you.

When you focus on what motivates you, great things can happen.

Here’s a little bit of my story as an example.

I’m sure you’re probably like me. You don’t want your kids to drown. So you get ’em swimming lessons. Right? And you don’t want ’em to crash the family car. Or, worse yet, end up a highway statistic. So, you make sure they get driver’s education with at least 50 hours behind the wheel.

And you probably care more about their teeth and hygiene than they do. At least while they’re young. So, you teach them how to brush their teeth, wash their face, and clean up after themselves.

Sure, it’s a lot of work. But the payoff is, they learn how to be successful adults.

And that’s what motivated me, all those years ago, to build a work-from-home business.

So, I worked hard on a system that would turn my dream into something real. Because I just couldn’t bear the thought of getting so tangled up in the corporate world that I wouldn’t see them grow up.

But I knew it would take a good system. Plus, those other things you always hear about, too.

Dedication. Persistence. Etc.

Fortunately, I developed that system while I was still in the corporate world. And then, I was able to take it to other business owners and entrepreneurs and help them reach their dreams and goals, too.

And I reached my goal to work from home where I could be with my kids.

No, I’m not gonna do a music review for that old Simon and Garfunkel song, Bridge Over Troubled Water. I’m not a music critic. And I don’t play one on TV or the internet. And I’m also not gonna go through how to set up and examine your business balance sheet.

But I DO have something to say about A business balance sheet.

The one I’m talking about has to do with maintaining a healthy balance between business life and home life. In case you didn’t see a short case study I shared a while back, here’s what I said:

“Bill (not his real name) is an ambitious client of mine. So ambitious that he set a goal of making $5 million in profits from his business within 10 years. That’s a lofty goal. Nothing wrong with that. But it blew up in Bill’s face. Not because it wasn’t do-able. No, the problem was much worse than a matter of skills and ambition. His goal started taking all his time. And that meant there wasn’t any left for family time. And I wish I could say it just strained or tested it family. But it actually destroyed it.”

Sadly, that story is repeated way too often.

Unfortunately, too many families don’t work well together. And business goals overshadow family life. But I believe you can keep a healthy business balance sheet by setting up a System as you set up your business.

Because a good system can free you from the day-to-day tasks. And it can help you delegate things that can be done by employees working in the system. Then, you can work on ideas and relationships. Instead of business supplies and cleanups.

Don’t be Bill.

I saw some more stats on college dropouts. And much of the news isn’t good. At least, not for colleges. But I also read an article about a Satellite conference that included Elon Musk. And he had some interesting opinions on it.

Elon said college dropouts would be ideal.

During the conference an audience member asked why Musk’s company, Tesla, advertised so many jobs that required a college degree. Even a master’s degree in some cases. Here’s what the article shared…

~ Musk, whose net worth is estimated at $34bn, responded by saying that college was unnecessary because “you can learn anything you want for free”.

The main value of college, he said, is to be found in proving discipline by completing “annoying homework assignments” and in hanging around with people of the same age before entering the workforce.

“I think college is basically for fun and to prove that you can do your chores, but they’re not for learning,” Musk said.

He also said he hopes to make sure his electric car company Tesla does not have university requirements for jobs, “because that’s absurd”. The main requirement for employment at his companies, he said, is “exceptional ability”.

“I don’t consider going to college evidence of exceptional ability,” Musk said. “In fact, ideally you dropped out.”

Musk listed some “smart guys” who dropped out of college: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison. He also made his reference to Shakespeare, in fact the son of a glover who received a grammar school education but no more. ~

Did you catch that big bomb Elon dropped?

He doesn’t “consider going to college evidence of exceptional ability.” And obviously he meant it. Because he followed it up with “In fact, ideally you dropped out.”

IDEALLY. Wow.

He didn’t say he and his company would be willing to make exceptions for college dropouts. He said he considered them to be ideal candidates for positions at Tesla.

But I bet Elon would still check to see what YOU have learned if you apply for a job with any of his companies. Yeah, he DID mention the learning part. And he said “you can learn anything you want for free.” True. The internet is the big education equalizer.

I read an article about a race car builder who shared how he came up with his prize winning ideas for  car designs. He said they usually happened shortly after his first cup of coffee in the morning. And he figured it must’ve been that shot of caffeine that jolted his vision “off the starting line.”

Then he said, “I guess, my prize winning designs come from espresso.”

Of course, he was kidding. At least a little. But when asked to explained what happened after that first cup, he just said, “Seriously? My brain wakes up. And I SEE what I’m gonna do before I do it.”

Fortunately, he’s also a race car drive. So, he has more than a little insight for what drivers need and want. And that means he doesn’t even have to draw out his designs on paper. Because he gets such a clear picture of the new design in his mind. And before long, he puts his team together and they build the car.

His track record (pun intended) speaks for itself.

There’s an interesting business book, called “Million Dollar Blue Collar,” that shows you how to make a bunch of money doing what so many others don’t wanna do.

And people are talking the Million Dollar Blue Collar strategy lately.

And it’s no surprise to me. Because the book (and strategy) shares a lot of the why AND how to start a blue collar business. Or buy one. Or run one. But it (the book) also shares HOW to get it going and WHY you should consider it.

And I saw an article that mentioned a guy named Jocko Willink (hey, that’s what they said his name is).  Jocko has some definite opinions about blue collar work. For example, he said:

“I think the world speaks for itself right now. There’s a lot of people out there getting degrees in a bunch of topics that don’t really serve any purpose, and there’s a reckoning happening with that right now in America.

People spent $200,000 getting a degree, and they have $200,000 in debt, and they get a job where they get $34,000 a year based on that degree. I think the world sees that. I think they see it in America.

What’s worse is that the degrees themselves don’t provide any benefit to the world.

Then Mr. Willink explained,

“There’s no skill there. It’s something you could have learned in the library reading books. Which it’s admirable to read books and learn things. But if you go into the blue collar industries, you become an electrician, a plumber, a carpenter, an ironworker, or you pour concrete. And that’s a skill that you are going to bring to bear in the world.”

I saw a funny meme that said, “Stop rapping. And start building real stuff.”

I’m not saying you should give up your vision of writing books or creating beautiful art. But not everybody is good enough to be an author or painter. And blue collar work provides goods and services just about everybody needs. So, there’s always gonna be a need for skilled workers.

AND skilled blue collar business owners.

And THAT’S where I come in.

You’d have to have been on a deserted island, or something like that, to not know Daylight Savings 2023 has kicked in. Yeah, just a couple of days ago. How’s it going for you so far? I’m checking out if it helps by sending you this rare evening email. Because it’s still light outside.

Daylight savings 2023 is the same as previous years.

Right? I mean, does it feel any different to you? Yeah, I’m not a fan of losing that hour of sleep on the first Sunday when it kicks in on the second Sunday of March.

And it’s funny (not ha ha funny) how daylight savings time doesn’t actually save daylight. Or time for that matter. In fact, it doesn’t even save resources like electricity anymore. And that was one of the most important reasons for putting it in place for some people.

According to an article I read, daylight savings time has been in place in nearly all of the United States since the 1960s. It was first tried in 1918. And daylight savings time was used, year-round, during World War Two. President Franklin Roosevelt called it “War Time.”

Then, the year-round version was put in place again in 1973. Supposedly to reduce energy use because of an oil embargo. But it was repealed the next year. And since then, America, except for Arizona and Hawaii, has been on the back and forth version we have now.

So, once again you and I had to set our wristwatches (remember those?), the clock on the coffee maker, and the clock on the stove and microwave an hour ahead before going to bed Saturday night. Because you sure don’t wanna look silly, on Sunday morning, when you’re late for breakfast and everything after that. Right?

Good news (maybe it’s good anyway) is that the back and forth stuff might stop this year. A lot of the people, in Congress, who have power over decisions like this, have voted to not go back to standard time this coming fall.

As for me, I think it would be nice to leave time and daylight alone.

Hard to say whether Daylight Savings 2023 is the last time we have to move the clocks or not. But I firmly believe your focus should be on what you can get done during whatever the daylight hours are.

And that’s where I come in. Because I can help you get more done in the hours you’re awake. No matter which hours those are.

Wow. It’s hard to believe. But it’s already getting close to the end of another school year. And I’ve already seen ads for graduation gifts in lots of places. Especially online. Have you seen any yet? Some of the ideas are very good. Others? Not so much.

Here are some graduation gifts I recommend you should skip.

Before I tell you what they are, let me say this. I don’t recommend a pass because they’re awful gifts. But I just don’t think they fit the criteria for what could help your graduate in life.

Like an ad I saw for a 32 ounce “hydro flask.” C’mon. It’s a water bottle. And your graduate should be able to go out and buy their own water bottle. AND not spend $50. Seriously.

Then, I saw an ad for a snazzy hardcover photo album. And while I think that’s a nice gift, how many young people do you know who would prefer that over just checking out their snaps on their phones? Right? Faster. Easier. And way handier than carrying around a photo album. Save the $49 and let them stick with their phone camera and photos app.

How about a “classic bathrobe?” Who wouldn’t love one of those? Well, from what I’ve noticed, they’re not that popular with younger people. But, even more important, that $110 could go a long way toward their ongoing education. Just sayin’.

I even saw a set of sheets for almost $400. Are you kidding me?

OK. Enough dissing. Check out these “investment” graduation gifts.

Sure, you could spend $2500 on a MacBook Pro. And that could be an awesome tool to help your grad do a wide variety of work they could get paid well to do. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how much a great computer can do to help you in life. Pretty much self-explanatory.

One thrifty and handy gift idea I saw was a portable battery, by Anker, that can charge phones a couple of times. And the battery is only about $36. That makes more sense. And it’s something just about anybody can use. Especially if they’re prone to running down their phone.

Another interesting idea, if you wanna make sure your grad has good food while they figure out their life, is a meal bundle. I saw multiple ads. One of those I remember is from Thrive Market. I don’t have other info to share. Do your own research. But you can’t go wrong with an “investment” in food.

But here’s a gift idea I’ve recommended before.

You gotta keep moving forward because that’s where the prize is. And that’s true for you, personally, and for your dreams. Whether those dreams are to have your own business or work for someone else.

Here’s what Jennifer, a client, said about the prize she found in her System.

No, I’m not about to start a relationship advice column or blog series. But I DO have some things I think you should at least consider before you get involved with someone.

And I think this relationship advice is appropriate for just about anyone.

When you look for that special someone, be sure they:

  • Fill in your negative spaces
  • Care about YOU and your needs
  • Set a good example
  • Share your dreams and values
  • Will tell you the truth
  • Are willing to admit their mistakes
  • Are able to be objective and worthy of your trust
  • Can help you bring out your best

All of those things seem like common sense relationship advice. Right? And it’s so sad that most people don’t seem to want to try to live up to those things.

Is it selfishness? Greed? Or something else?

Whatever it is, I believe it could be easily avoided by building a relationship with someone who meets all, or most, of the bullet points I shared.

And check out this “coincidence.”

It just so happens, that same kind of relationship advice is great for when you decide to hire a business coach. Makes sense, too. Because you’ll have a lot more success if your business coach…

  • Has a different skillset than you
  • Wants to truly help YOU and your business grow
  • Leads by example
  • Has the same or similar mindset

I’m gonna share some symptoms. Or red flags. Or signs. Whatever you wanna call ’em. Doesn’t matter. Just see if any of them sound familiar. And, if so, you need help. This is crucial. Read on.

You need help if:
