(This post was supposed to come to you last Friday. But technology did what it sometimes does. So, the scheduling software let me down. But it’s just as important now. So here you go.) When things get questionable in the world, most people pull in, back up, or even shut down. And that goes double double for new or recent business owners and entrepreneurs. Because they (I hope you aren’t one of them) start to believe the information that says the sky is falling. But that’s known as a scarcity mentality.

There’s always somebody out there who’ll tell you the sky is falling.

And maybe one day the actual sky will actually fall. But I wouldn’t bet my life on it. Now, I know there’s the metaphorical sky that could fall, too. But I still wouldn’t bet my life on it. After all, when you research even the most catastrophic financial times, you find that some people still get rich during those times.

Sure, it can be scary when you see prices on literally everything go up. And up. And, oh yeah, up.

But here’s the (sad) truth about that. Prices have been going up my entire life. And way back before I was born. For example, did you know a man, back in the day (and I mean way back in the day) could make a dollar a day and still feed his family? I’m sure it was challenging. But it happened. And that shows you how far UP prices have gotten since those days.

But let’s put it in perspective. A $15 an hour employee makes as much, in one day, as that man, back in the day, did in 120 days. In other words, that man had to work one-third of a year to equal one day of low-end wages these days.

So, why do I even bring it up? Right? Probably to sell something. Right?

Well, yes. And…not exactly.

I’m an online business coach with a long, proven track record. But you might not know if you even need or want a business coach. In that case, let me offer some research somebody else did about hiring a business coach.

Here’s some info about what to look for:

  • First, figure out what you need.
  • Then, check a potential coach’s testimonials.
  • Find out something about their successes.
  • Don’t work with a coach who won’t agree to a one-on-one conversation before you commit.
  • This is the only way to determine your compatibility. Some business coaches will offer a free consultation.
  • And make sure your prospective business coach is a great listener.

By the way, a great listener is someone who asks questions to see if you’re both a good fit. And if not, he or she is comfortable recommending someone else.The answer depends on your business goals and objectives and the type of coach you hire.

A great coach can be worth millions.

OK. I know. I just shared some stuff to look for in a business coach because I AM a business coach. But, I want you to know how much I want you to achieve your dreams and achieve your goals for life. Have you ever thought about the humorous phases of funny faces? Yeah. Neither have I. But have you ever considered the power of animation effects? Well, me neither, until. Until I read a short historical blurb this morning. And, of course, it made me think of something I wanna share with you.

First, let me tell you about the animation effects blurb.

Exactly 117 years ago, today (April 6), in 1906, British-American film pioneer, Stuart Blackton, recorded animation effects on standard picture film. He used chalkboard drawing, cut-out animation, and stop-motion photography. And he called it (maybe you’ve already guessed) “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces.” It was only about three minutes long. Silent film of course. Because “talking” pictures hadn’t come out yet.

Mr. Blackton made a series of scenes that included a man playing with a hat and a dog jumping through a hoop. There’s even a section where a weird man blows cigar smoke in a woman’s face.

I watched the short video of it this morning. And when you compare those simple animation effects to what we have in movies, now, well there’s just no comparison. But somebody had to start somewhere. Right?

And that’s true for every artist, business owner, or entrepreneur, too. You gotta start somewhere. And what does it take to get started? Well, today I’m gonna say it takes animation effects. Because you gotta start moving. Your vision isn’t gonna fly into your life. You’ve gotta fly your life into it. And, by flying, I mean it takes action.

Creativity is the answer to, and the cause of, many (if not most) of life’s challenges. A couple of interesting and creative world changers, Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs, attributed a lot of their problem solving abilities to procrastination. I talked about that before.

Einstein loved to think and imagine as he floated around in his sailboat. One story I read said he was even arrested one time for wandering around a beach. I guess they thought he was a crazy vagrant. Honest mistake when you check out his iconic hairdo. And he just wandered as he pondered.

Steve Jobs said procrastination helped him jot down ideas. And doodle. And I guess one of those doodles turned into a little product you might remember. The iPod.

So, those famous (and wealthy) guys had great problem solving skills.

I think we can all agree on that. And no matter what kind of business you run (or would like to run) you’ll have problems to solve. That’s also true for any meaningful job you’ll ever have.

For example, a friend of mine told me how his auto mechanic had to come up with a creative solution to fix a part on his classic pickup. Because he couldn’t find the right replacement part anywhere.

And another example comes from an accountant I know. He told me how he’s always looking for new (aka creative) ways to save his clients money.

I’m sure you can think of dozens of other examples from your own life. Right?

But maybe you still don’t believe you have any time in your life to procrastinate. Or doodle and float around in a sailboat dreaming up ways to solve problems. And maybe you don’t.

I could say it does. But you might wonder does business coaching work? Because, if you’ve considered getting some business consultation or coaching, I’m sure you’ve seen how much it can cost. And that can be a lot. For some. So, here’s the question you should ask.

None of those stats do a thing to change the cost of business coaching. That’s true. But they show how business coaching can actually pay for itself. But there’s a very important caveat to that statement. And it involves…

YOU.

None of those stats, or any others anybody could come up with, will apply to you if you don’t apply yourself to the System. No system works if nobody works the system.

Over the weekend I saw a video of Jewel singing her hit song, “Standing Still.” I like it because she’s in a classic convertible driving down the open road. And her singing style is melancholy but not actually sad. If you enjoy acoustic pop/rock with nice harmonies, check it out.

And her “Standing Still” video reminded me of her interesting story.

I shared it a couple of years ago. But if you didn’t catch that, I’ll share it again. Because I think it’s an awesome example of someone who created a vision for herself and didn’t let anything or anyone distract her from it.

Back in 1974, a relatively obscure singer/songwriter couple celebrated the birth of their baby girl. And by the time she was 6 years old, the little girl joined her parents on stage. Sadly, her parents divorced. But the little girl continued to tour with her father. And he taught her how to yodel. And that would come in handy later on.

Not many singers, who know how to yodel, become famous.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet you can’t name three famous yodelers right this minute. Right? But don’t feel bad. I can’t either.

But it wasn’t exactly the yodeling that made the young girl famous. Matter of fact, she had to work hard and sacrifice to even be noticed. But she definitely got noticed.

When she was only 15, she began her career as a solo act. And her hard work paid off. Because she won a vocal scholarship to a private school of the arts. And that’s where she learned guitar and started writing songs. After that, she moved to San Diego, California, to live with her mother. But she decided to try and go it on her own again. And she even lived in a van so she could focus on her music career.

She worked hard to develop her own style.

And her vocals and poetic, storytelling lyrics helped her land a steady booking at the Innerchange in Pacific Beach. That’s where she was discovered by a music manager and record company reps. And they were impressed enough to sign her to a recording deal with Atlantic Records in 1994.

But you might wonder, how did knowing how to yodel help her out?

Well, that falls into the category, I mentioned, of developing her own style. Because she applied some of the techniques for yodeling to the way she sang her songs. And audiences loved it. So did those record company people.

And she did so well that she’s one of those talented singers you know by only one name.

Focus like that doesn’t always mean you’ll end up rich and famous. But it IS the only way you can achieve your dreams and goals.

A couple of years ago, a client of mine (Penny) wrote to me and shared some thoughts about how my RondaReady System can be applied to stay at home parents. Here’s what she said:

I’m not an auto body paint specialist. And I don’t play one on YouTube. So, it might seem a little weird that I’d share something with you about linear blocking tools. And, I confess, I never heard of them before this morning. That’s when I came across them during some internet research.

Have you ever heard of linear blocking tools?

Even though sanding and painting a car isn’t my idea of a good time, linear blocking tools look like a very cool invention for guys who do that work. Look ’em up (if you’re an info nerd like me) and you’ll see what I mean. They’re cylindrical tubes to make easier work of the sanding process.

But I have my own set of linear blocking tools. And the good news is, there’s no sanding required.

Ol’ Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, understood how time marches on no matter who you are or what you do. And I think that was why he said, “Before everything else, getting ready is the secret to success.”

No doubt about it. Time marches on. With, or without you.

Right now. As you read each word another second goes by that you can never get back. So, it’s pretty important to Get Ready, Be Ready, and Stay Ready. Check out these other quotes:

“The secret of success is to be ready when your opportunity comes.” ~Benjamin Disraeli

“Knowledge is power, and it can help you overcome any fear of the unexpected. When you learn, you gain more awareness through the process, and you know what pitfalls to look for as you get ready to transition to the next level.” ~Jay Shetty

“I look out the window sometimes to seek the color of the shadows and the different greens in the trees, but when I get ready to paint I just close my eyes and imagine a scene.”
~Grandma Moses

I really like that last quote from Grandma Moses. Because part of her process to get ready was just to close her eyes and imagine.

That sounds like the Envision Your Future section of my RondaReady courses.

And I’m a firm believer in how important it is to be able to see something in your mind before you see it in the physical world. Because if you can’t clearly see it in your mind, then you can’t know what to do next. Yeah, without a clear vision, you’re just not Ready to move forward.

And time marches on whether you’re ready or not.

That’s why I call my business, RondaReady.

Because I wanna BE ready. And STAY ready. And I don’t wanna have to start from scratch every time I start something new. Because I have a vision of how I want my life and business to go. So, I wanna be able to fall back on my System and know it’s gonna be there for me.

Have you heard of this guy? And I only ask because you might be right where he was once upon a time. You wouldn’t know it to look at him now. But his fame and fortune is nothing like where he started.

Here’s a paragraph from his author bio on Amazon:

“A young entrepreneur, an industry pioneer, a highly regarded marketing expert, and a man who has surpassed new heights of commercial and financial success are just a few ways people have described Daymond John. Over the last 20 years, Daymond has evolved from one of the most successful fashion icons of his generation to one of the most sought after branding experts, business, and motivational speakers in the country.”

Yeah, it’s safe to say Daymond John enjoys a lot of fame and fortune.

But that only happened because he built a strong brand based on a focused vision. In fact, you get a little peek at that in the second paragraph of his author bio:

“Daymond’s creative vision and strong knowledge of the marketplace helped him create one of the most iconic fashion brands in recent years. FUBU, standing for “For Us By Us”, represented a lifestyle that was neglected by other clothing companies. Realizing this need in the marketplace, Daymond created the untapped urban apparel space and laid the groundwork for other companies to compete in this newly established market.”

See the three key points in that paragraph? He started with his own creative vision. And he built a strong knowledge in the marketplace. And, here’s the clincher, he followed through.

Vision and follow-through don’t always lead to fame and fortune.

But they are always necessary. Because without ’em, you don’t even know where you’re going. That’s why I spend so much time helping clients and students define their vision. And then I show them ways they can even automate some of their follow-through.

Have you ever tried to draw a perfect circle by hand? Try it sometime. You can’t do it. But don’t feel bad. Because nobody else can either. And even if you could, it wouldn’t impress many people. Because most people don’t prefer perfect circles. In fact, it’s almost like the total opposite is true.

One guy, who couldn’t draw a perfect circle, is a perfect example of this.

Walt Disney. You might remember him. If not, you’ve at least heard of his legacy. Disneyland. Disneyworld. Mickey Mouse. Ring any bells?

Mr. Disney had a strong and focused vision. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. And he never let the challenges break his focus or his spirit. I mean, I’m sure he must’ve had his moments of doubt, when he got down to eating dog food (true story). Who wouldn’t?

But Walt kept his eyes on the prize.

And that’s in spite of being told by MGM Studios that a mouse on a giant screen wouldn’t work because it would terrify women. And The Three Little Pigs wouldn’t work because there weren’t enough characters in the cartoon. But in spite of all that, Mickey Mouse became one of the most famous cartoon characters of all time.

And guess what? Those three little pigs were so successful they played in one theater so long that the owner put up a poster of them with long, white beards.

Walt Disney’s biography is a good read for any entrepreneur who’d like some inspiration to keep pushing forward. Because his fame (and his vision) have lasted way beyond his time on Earth.

And he was a guy who couldn’t draw a perfect circle if his life depended on it.

But I wanna circle back (see what I did there?) to that vision part.
