There are plenty of business owners and entrepreneurs who’ll probably be willing to tell you that you don’t need business coaching services. And even though I’m a business coach, I’ll say that’s true.

Business coach services might not be for YOU.

Because it depends on what your business is. And what you want your part to be. And quite a few other factors which are different from person to person.

But maybe a better question than whether or not business coach services are right for you is this. Does business coaching really work? Of course, I believe so. But here are some other thoughts on that.

A study in Manchester England revealed “that businesses who hired a business coach experienced an average ROI of 5.7 times the fee they pay for the coaching services.”

Hmm…that’s pretty impressive. But how about this?

A group called “The Personal Management Association” reported “that executives who received coaching and training services raised their productivity by 86%.” And that beat the  “22% boost in productivity by executives who paid for training alone.”

But who cares about stats shared by some groups or organizations you never heard of? Right?

Friday is here. As I write this, it’s 3/3/23. And it’s early Friday morning. So, of course, I know the first thing that probably comes to your mind is the wife of Odin. Right?

And apparently Friday is here because of Frigg.

No, that’s not an alternate curse word. It’s Odin’s wife’s name. She’s the queen of Asgard, the capital city of the Norse gods. Surely you’re familiar with Thor. And, if so, you must know that Odin and Frigg are his parents. According to the norse myths, she sits in a high seat called (are you ready for this?) Hliðskjálf. Say that three times real fast.

The myths say Frigg can look into other worlds from her high seat. And, because of that, she’s prophetic.

But the only reason I brought up her name is because many sources say Frigg is where we get the name Friday. Seems like a bit of a stretch, to me. But when you study the etymology of words, it starts to make sense. And since today is Friday, I thought it would be fun to share a little lighthearted history.

Evidently, Friday is also connected to the planet Venus. And to follow the origin of the word a little further, it’s derived from the Latin “dies Veneris.” And that means “day of Venus.” That’s fairly close to the Romanian version of vineri, and the French version, vendredi.

As you can see, people have put a lot of thought into it, through the years.

And many, if not most, people agree that Friday represents the last day of the work week. So, it’s a day to rejoice, in expectation, for the upcoming weekend. Yay! Two whole days away from work.

But you business owners and entrepreneurs are probably more like me. You know that your dedication to your ideas and goals doesn’t go away on Saturday and Sunday. But you still need a break from the work routine. Because your work isn’t the only thing that defines who you are. Right?

I remember an article I read that shared “Business Hacks To Help You Stay Focused.” But what I noticed was how each “hack” was about how to not do something.

And I believe “business hacks” aren’t the solution.

Because they don’t get to the root problem. Sure, interruptions and distractions and pointless meetings can pop up all the time. But business hacks aren’t the way to stay focused when they happen.

I saw an interesting vintage TV article that talked about a show from way back in the 1950’s and 60’s.  The show was called “Beat The Clock.” And, of course, since I talk a lot about schedule control here on my website and in my emails, that got my attention.

Here’s a short blurb from that “Beat The Clock” article:

“Contestants were required to perform tasks (called ‘problems’ by Collyer) within a certain time limit which was counted down on a large 60-second clock. If they succeeded, they were said to have ‘beaten the clock.’ Otherwise, the clock beat them.”

So, now I’ve gotta ask.

Do you feel like your life or business is all about figuring out a way to beat the clock? Or do you feel like it’s already beaten you? If you answered, yes, to either question, I’m sorry to hear that. Especially when I believe it’s so unavoidable.

When I first started business(es) in California, it was all too easy to obsess over the details. And spend too much time on the phone. And go to bed with too many thoughts about “tomorrow” to get a good night’s sleep.

But, do you know what all those mental and physical obsessions are called? Bad habits.

And I had to break the bad habits of doubt and worry. And replace them with good habits. Like automation. And schedule control. Plus, those good habits helped me appreciate other healthy habits. Like plenty of fresh air, sunshine, and better food. And guess what?

Then, I started to sleep better. And that helped me stay in a good mood. Ready to take on the world.

Before I go any further I gotta say this. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with ordinary people. The world is filled with them. And many, if not most, of them prefer to be that way. And there’s nothing that could change their minds. But I believe they miss out on most of life’s unexpected (and expectable) surprises.

Definitely true. Because ordinary people might come up with an idea. But they don’t follow through. Because they find out there’s more to success than a good idea. So, they usually throw their hands up in the air and go back to their J.O.B.

But that’s not you. Right? You’re not like “everybody.” Right?

Back in 1976, way before my time of course, a young woman named Mary MacGregor had a hit song called “Torn Between Two Lovers.” It was about a love triangle (you know what those are if you’ve ever watched a Hallmark movie), and the chorus to the the lyrics said:

Torn between two lovers…

Feelin’ like a fool.
Lovin’ both of you
Is breakin’ all the rules.

OK, that’s my lyrical segue into what I’ve seen a lot of new business owners and entrepreneurs struggle with. They’re torn between two perspectives. And I can see why. Because there are so many business experts telling newbies to pursue their passions. And there are just as many who’ll tell you to find your purpose, build a solid business, and the passion will develop over time.

So, which is it? Passion? Or purpose?

This morning I remembered a story about how a business owner newbie went to two different seminars on two straight weekends. And, in the first one, the main speaker talked all about how to “pump up your passion.” And the second main speaker, the next weekend, bragged about the “power of purpose.”

But I don’t think it has to be passion OR purpose.

Because I believe it’s key to “find your purpose.” And then find your market. And when you do, it can stir up that business-building passion in you no one can put out.

But look at that “find your market” part again. Because, keep in mind, it’s easy to be passionate about something that might be interesting to only YOU. And when no one seems interested but you, you might be surprised at how your passion flickers out. That’s why it’s important to find your purpose, develop a system, and build your business.

And when your success starts multiplying, I’m willing to bet your passion will, too.

I’m not a pro sports expert. So, this is gonna seem like kind of a weird thing for me to compare to. And if you DO know something about pro sports, you probably already know about special teams coaches. But I was surprised to find out how many different kinds there are.

They have special teams coaches for almost every position.

Especially in football. You have the kicker coach, the quarterback coach, the defensive coach, the offensive coach, and receiver and runner coaches. It’s almost as complex as specialty doctors. And while it can be a little overwhelming to someone who doesn’t follow the games, I can easily see how much sense it makes.

Because I’m a business coach. So, I understand personalized, specialized, and tiered levels of service.

For an example, to start with, I’ve had one-on-one business coaching sessions for years. And those are sessions where I’m able to focus, just as the name implies, on one business owner or entrepreneur at a time. One-on-one sessions are for business owners or entrepreneurs who have a budget that can absorb the higher cost with no adverse affects to their company. But the cost isn’t necessarily affordable for newbies.

And I’ve had I don’t know how many clients tell me our time together easily paid for itself. Over and over.

Another example of “special teams” coaching for business is an advanced membership program. And while it’s not as personalized and specialized as one-on-one, it can super effective for some. Especially if a business owner or entrepreneur has some momentum and just needs help to scale things up to the next level.

Then, there’s a standard membership program. That sort of membership typically runs under $100, sometimes quite a bit under, and it can connect business owners into a business coaching community. It’s not nearly as personal as one-on-one. But it doesn’t cost nearly as much either.

So, there are trade-offs.

Above all those examples you can get into “mastermind” groups. And those are definitely premium-priced options. So, they’re only for business owners and entrepreneurs who can afford a membership from $5000 a year to even $100,000 a year. Yeah. Not for the faint-hearted.

And for the master business builders, mastermind groups can have HUGE networking benefits.

But, today, I’m talking about the opposite of the spectrum. My RondaReady UNversity monthly membership. It’s $15 a month. And that’s $180 a year. A far cry from $100,000. And you definitely won’t be rubbing elbows with multi-millionaires and billionaires. But it’s a great way for newbie business owners and entrepreneurs to build momentum. It’s a long word to describe certain kinds of people. And I think the way you’ll see entrepreneur defined, in most dictionaries, doesn’t really fit.

For example, one dictionary has entrepreneur defined like this:

“A person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.”

There’s nothing really wrong or bad about that definition. But I think it gives a skewed perspective. Because these days entrepreneurs don’t necessarily have to take on “greater than normal financial risks” in order to be involved in business. Sure, you still CAN go “all in.” But it’s not a requirement.

Also, check out the words, you can find in a thesaurus, to describe an entrepreneur:

(formal) businessman, businesswoman, business person, business executive, enterpriser, speculator, tycoon, magnate; dealer, trader, buyer and seller, merchant; commercial intermediary, intermediary, middleman, promoter, and impresario

(informal) wheeler-dealer, mogul, big shot, bigwig, whiz kid, mover and shaker, go-getter, high-flyer, hustler

Again, I think several of those descriptions miss the mark.

I know (and have known) a LOT of entrepreneurs. And, offhand, I can’t remember any who acted could be described as tycoons, magnates, moguls, big shots, bigwigs, or hustlers.

And most of the entrepreneurs I’ve known were down-to-earth types who realized how much help they needed to systemize their dreams and goals. They understood how a business coach could provide an outside (and fresh) perspective. And they knew that a coach could help them see their blind spots and problem areas. Plus, they were glad to get the help they needed to develop effective strategies and track and measure their progress.

I think most entrepreneurs are humble enough to realize how beneficial it is to learn how to manage stress, build a team, and scale their business. And they discover how a coach helps them get things done so much better and faster. Because that coach is able to remain objective about their “baby.”

Of course, large corporations can hire agencies and fancy companies to run tons of data. But small businesses, run by entrepreneurs with an idea and a dream, appreciate the personalized touch of a coach. And that coach’s job is to learn as much as they can about your business.

So, that does get up close and personal.

But that’s crucial, in order to help you achieve your goals.

Through the years I’ve had the privilege of working with some awesome entrepreneurs who were just starting out. And I’ve enjoyed working with established business owners who needed some outside help to get them to that “next level.”

“I really want to be more organized,” he said. “I know I need to be more efficient and productive. But I’m just not good at it.” So, I looked at Bob (not his real name) and asked, “Well, how do you get good at anything? Practice. Right? And when you wanna get better, practice is important. Why? Say it with me:

Practice is important because that’s the only way you get better.

But it’s not just the practice that’s important. It’s also the WAY you practice.

Here’s why I say that. And here’s what I tell my new clients. If you’re not in control of your schedule, someone else will be.  You don’t have to look far to find someone ready and willing to take over and tell you when to do things. It can even happen at home. When you don’t take charge at home, your kids, and even your dog will.

And it only gets worse when that happens in your business with adults.

Prospects and customers love to take control of when you’ll meet. If you let them. And don’t be surprised when your employees decide to make their own rules about time off. Or how productive they’ll be. If. You. Let. Them.

Kind of reminds me of an old Carol King song, “You’ve Got A Friend.” She sang:

Now ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend
When people can be so cold?
They’ll hurt you, and desert you.
They’ll take your soul if you let them.
Oh, but don’t you let them

Absolutely true. So, don’t let them.

And that’s just out there in the regular relationship world. So, you can imagine how much worse it can be in the world of business where you don’t know each other yet.

So, stay in control of your schedule. You’ll be so much happier. But how do you do it?

Hmm, didn’t I already say how practice is important?

Start with these 5 things:

  1. Decide what you really want to accomplish
  2. Categorize all the steps /tasks that must take place to achieve those accomplishments
  3. Work a time blocked schedule. Set recurring time blocks for those categories
  4. Be intentional and schedule your day-to-day tasks and appointments during your corresponding time blocks
  5. Be vigilant about your daily schedule to support what you decided in the first step

 

Do those things, and you’re off to a good start. But here’s the rub. There’s really a lot more. But I just don’t have time to put it all in a blog post or email. Have you ever seen any kind of clothing that claims to be one-size-fits-all and thought, “Yeah, right.” Because is there truly anything that could fit everybody? I’ll go out on a limb, hear, and blurt out an emphatic, “NO!” And the same thing (well, sort of the same thing) is true with businesses. Generic advice for your business can never compete with personalized coaching.

Because generic advice doesn’t even know what your business looks like.

Oh sure, there are some things that are true for every business owner or entrepreneur. Like, you’ve gotta make more money than you spend. Or you’ve gotta be able to provide what somebody wants. But you might still wonder how some “coach” could help YOU do that. Well, I don’t know what all business coaches do. But I can tell you what I’m doing with my business owner clients.
