16 dollars an hour. Wow! I just read an article that talked about people who want that to be the minimum wage for workers here in America. Some say 15. And others say 20. But this article mentioned the number, 16. And I say,

“16 dollars an hour is WAY too much!”

Ho hum. Big yawn. Yeah, it sounds like nap time dead ahead just at the mention of an accountability system. I mean, who cares? There’s too much going on in the world to stop and think about something so trivial. Right?

Well, sure. That’s right if you don’t need an accountability system.

But that’s probably less than 1% of the world’s population. And I wouldn’t be surprised if that number was actually lower.

But the rest of us can (or could) use someone or something to hold our virtual feet to the fire. A great example of what I’m talking about is found in the story of 4 people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. When it came time to get something done, it went like this…

“This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”

That last sentence sums the whole thing up very nicely.

“Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”

Because there was no accountability system. No one (or nothing) to keep track. And make projections.

I’m the accountability partner to my one-on-one clients. At least that’s what one of them called me.

She said, when she’s working with me she feels more motivated. And she’s noticed herself rise to a higher performance level. I know that feeling, too. Working with a mentor or a coach can take you to good places you maybe weren’t going before.

I’ve had (and still have) my own coaches.

Yes, a business coach needs coaches. And when you get right down to it, everybody does. But not everybody realizes it. Not everybody understands how important it is to keep learning. To keep developing. Keep growing. And, as I said, keep track and make projections.

As good as you are at what you do, you might still suffer from the rose-colored glasses syndrome. In other words, you believe your products, services, and information should stand on their own.

Evidently there are lots of people dealing with “overwhelming exhaustion” these days. From lack of sleep, to news coverage of world trouble, to business pressures. You name it. And people are tired of it and from it. It’s like overwhelm is on steroids.

Here’s an example of what overwhelming exhaustion led to for my clients.

A few years ago, they experienced enormous pressures in their business. And in their personal lives. They told me how totally overwhelmed they felt. And they just couldn’t see which way to go or how to proceed. They kept getting slammed with unexpected circumstances. And they felt helpless to handle it all. So, they contacted me for some guidance.

And the first thing I said was, “Let’s get back to the basics before anything else.”

Because the fastest way to deal with overwhelm is to get back to the basics.

I listened to their story. And I watched the looks on their faces.

Then, I said, “Ok, when we look at this objectively, it’s clear that momentum isn’t going your way. And I shared a sports analogy. When pro teams feel the momentum shifting away from them, they often take a time out. So, I said, “Start with a time out. Take a breath. Get a good drink of water. And now…let’s make a plan.”

Because a game plan can help you get momentum going your way again. Otherwise, you’ll be like an athlete running up and down the field or court with no idea which end is which. And running like that is just wasted energy.

That’s true in your business, too. Have you been guilty of “busy work.” You know, that work you do that doesn’t propel your business forward? Sure, it makes you feel like you’re doing something. Right? But that kind of work isn’t why you started your business. And it doesn’t move you forward. And surely, that’s not how you envisioned yourself.

So, you gotta change that to avoid overwhelming exhaustion.

I accidentally stumbled upon a website where users can download computer wallpaper of the Starship Enterprise’s control panel. I’m not a trekkie. But I have to admit, I was impressive how that website has had over 5 million downloads of their images. Wow! That’s kind of big deal.

But then I saw where some people actually built the control panel.

And I’m not talkin’ about some wimpy cardboard or craft paper model. No. Their panel looked like it came straight out of the movie or TV show. And they didn’t skimp on details. Check out this description of one function they installed…

“The Arduino also scans the bank of 8 switches on the control panel. When a switch is flipped, the Arduino passes its pin number up the serial connection to a Raspberry Pi. A simple Python program on the Pi runs a background sound loop, plus plays sounds as the switches are flipped.”

Are you kidding me?!

These are grownups. And they wanna build a control panel for a Starship that doesn’t even exist in the real world.

Well, that might not (and probably doesn’t) mean a thing to you. But I thought it was pretty impressive. And I thought about the virtual control panel I developed for my RondaReady System subscribers. It’s the awesome tool I personally use to not only control my schedule, but also communicate with my clients and track my performance.

Maewyn Succat (and I’m not sure how you pronounce that name) marched to the beat of a different drum. To say the least. His life reads like the script to a Hollywood movie.

First thing of note is how he was captured by pirates sometime in the late fourth or early fifth century. Then, he was sold into slavery and kept in bondage for six years. But somehow he managed to escape to France. And there he became a monk. After that, he became a bishop and eventually a missionary.

And that’s where the different drum comes into play (pun slightly intended).

During his mission to a particular island, Maewyn lured all the snakes to the sea where they drowned. And he did that by beating a drum. In fact, he beat the drum so enthusiastically that he knocked a hole in it. Of course, this is all according to legend. And legend also says that an angel appeared and mended the drum so Maewyn could get rid of all the snakes.

Evidently Maewyn’s drumming made the soil so repulsive to snakes that, to this day, they die immediately if they even touch the ground on that island.

But that’s just a small glimpse of what Maewyn Succat accomplished in his life. And he was buried near a famous cathedral on that island. And would you believe it? People still talk about him all the time.

In fact, Maewyn’s fame spread throughout most of the western world. And we even recognize him around this time every year. Oh yeah, I left out one detail.

After his death, the people of that island, also known as the Emerald Isle, renamed Maewyn and made him a Saint. You probably know him by his more famous name. Saint Patrick.

So, enjoy some green beer, live music, and parades today. Whatever you do to celebrate. But also, take a moment to think about Maewyn and how he and his different drum got rid of all the snakes in Ireland.

And bein’ Irish meself, ay it’s true that Macrory has Irish roots, I’ll leave you with this famous sayin’…

“May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.”

During a conversation with a client, who was going through a very rough spot in her life and business, I heard her repeat, “I had no other choice.” And she referred to some extreme changes she’d made. Changes like that might work for a tiny fraction of people. But it’s typically reactive thinking. Not a strategy. Especially in business. So this was my advice…

“Stop thinking you have no other choice.”

How’s that for amazingly complicated coaching?

But, seriously, you gotta know how badly YOU want a change?

When you know the answer to that question, you can make better decisions.

And then, be willing to make change happen. Because letting changes happen instead of making them happen, is a recipe for disaster. So please, don’t let other people’s opinions of what you need influence your decisions. They might have good intentions. But their circumstances are not your circumstances. And your desire to make change happen is all that matters.

So what do you desire in your life? In your business? Have you really thought it through?

When your mind and will work together, you can do amazing things. And you can achieve what you focus on. (there’s that focus word again) So, make sure you’re focused on solving problems. Not the problems. Because a focus on problems tends to create more problems. And that can lead back to that “I had no other choice” frame of mind.

Whatever day it is, as you read this, it’s the perfect time to make positive changes happen. Because, think about it, right now is the only time you can actually work on something. Right? So, get started today. And this time next year, you can look back and think, “Yeah! I made good choices.”

Here’s what I suggest for today.

Think things through. Focus. And make a plan.

The other day someone mentioned their fear of success. And then, I read a quote by someone I’m not familiar with. And I liked it. So I wanna share it with you. Susana Martinez said, “Success, they taught me, is built on the foundation of courage, hard-work, and individual responsibility. Despite what some would have us believe, success is not built on resentment and fears.

Hmm…courage, hard work, and individual responsibility. That sounds about right. Because you gotta have all those to be a business owner or entrepreneur.

And the fear of success can only take you one direction.

Remember that line Jack Nicholson’s character said to Tom Cruise’s character in “A Few Good Men?” He sort of yelled “You can’t handle the truth!” when Tom’s character said he wanted the truth. And the reason I brought that up is up because you gotta be able to handle the truth when it comes to the success or failure of your business. Truth that can honestly answer this question:

Are you one of those people with more fear of success than failure?

I’ve seen multiple lists of why people live that way. And most of their reasons are typically either irrational or not well thought out.

But I have some ideas for why you might be afraid of success.

And there’s no single reason for everybody. But everybody falls into at least one of three categories when it comes to a lack of success in business. See if any or all three of these apply to you.

  • Your mind isn’t laser focused
  • You haven’t developed income producing habits
  • And you don’t have a proven system you can depend on over and over

 

What do you think? Sound familiar? If so, give yourself a break. Just about every entrepreneur has either been there and done that, or they’re still there doing that. I know. Because I’ve been there, done that. And I help business owners, every day, as they work their way out of one or all of those problems.

What I’ve noticed is the successful ones show up every day.

With all the distractions going on in the world right now, no wonder it’s so hard to focus on good income producing habits. But that’s how you compound your problems. And fears.

So, here’s what I recommend. Don’t focus on things you can’t control. Instead, get out your roadmap. Stick to the course you’ve set for yourself. And put the pedal to the metal in your business.

Because the truth is, even right now, in this mixed up time, you can still build your own empire. Just because others let theirs crumble doesn’t mean yours will.

Just keep working on those three areas every successful business owner learns to master. Focus. Habits. And a proven system. Then, don’t fear the success you could achieve.

What’s your ten percent plan? Do you have one? Or have you at least thought about it? Because, just in case you haven’t heard, that’s the level inflation could reach right here in America. And that means just about everything you spend money on will be affected.

So, it’s good to have a ten percent plan, just in case.

And it’s actually pretty simple. Keep putting in the effort, with courage and skill. And then put in the extra effort to make an extra ten percent. See? Simple. Even if it’s not easy.

Yeah, you still gotta put in the effort. And maybe even a little more effort.

Sharpen your skills. Call up your courage. And get going.

Because I bet, somewhere in your mind, you still know where you wanna end up. And just because everything could cost way more doesn’t change that. Am I right (rhetorical question)?

The Pretenders sang a song with the question, “Where’s my sandy beach?” Your sandy beach might not be a beach at all. It might be a metaphor for a little house on a lake. Or a getaway in the mountains. Doesn’t matter where. And if it’s gonna take a little more to get there, then make yourself a ten percent plan.

Ten percent more focus. Ten percent more forward motion. And ten percent more efficiency.

Way back when, I built a system to help me create the habits and processes I needed stay on task. And that’s how I’ve been able to use my time wisely and stay organized. Then, I built up a large client list of business owners and entrepreneurs who plugged into my System and got those same kinds of benefits and results.

Over the years, I’ve worked with non-profit organizations in addition to my work with regular profit businesses. Both have been very rewarding experiences. And they both helped me figure out ways to help business owners and entrepreneurs dress up, and not mess up, their businesses. Here’s a little of what I mean…

The board of directors of one non-profit, in particular, hired me to help them get documented systems in place. And during my time there, a lot of changes occurred. Board leadership changed. At my meeting with the new board leadership, afterward, they were understandably concerned. And they were more than a little anxious to know “what kind of mess” the new management would find.

I know you’ve heard these expressions. “There’s no time like the present.” Or “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” And even “Carpe diem (seize the day).” Right? And I’ll apply those sayings to one of (if not THE) most important decisions you’ll make for your business. Full time or part time.

Yeah. Do you want a full time or part time business?

Because your decision determines how quickly and efficiently you’ll succeed. And a part time business usually means it’s just a hobby. So, do you want a hobby (which is OK) or a business that sustains you?
