I know most business owners and entrepreneurs won’t have time to organize any Veterans Day activities today. And that makes total sense. Because we need to keep working to keep the country moving. Right? But I saw an article that talked about 30 different ways to honor vets.

And all 30 Veterans Day activities involved organizing.

Like how to organize a community event or trip. The article ideas for that included…

  • Attend a Parade
  • Make a Meal
  • Organize an Assembly
  • Attend a Celebration
  • Visit a Local Battlefield
  • Give a Veterans Day Deal (especially good idea if you’re a business owner)
  • Visit a Local Memorial

 

And there were others. But I’m not sharing this to give you ideas for Veterans Day activities. Just do a search, online, and you’ll find more ideas than you can get to in years.

The point I wanna make is how even showing respect to those who’ve fought and died to keep America safe can benefit from organization and schedule control. For example, take just the “Make a Meal” idea. If you’ve never planned and made a meal for a group, you might not understand all the steps involved. But suffice it to say…it’s a lot of steps.

Sure, you could just order something from your local grocery store. Or have the whole thing catered. But that just means you’ve transferred some of the responsibilities. And even that takes time and organization.

But you do it when the event is worth it.

And honoring vets is certainly worth a few extra steps. Right?

And you and your business are worth that, too. After all, those vets put their lives on the line so you could live yours. So, I believe a great way to honor vets is to build a successful business and keep America strong.

Back in the 80’s a group called “The Bangles” had a hit song (secretly written by Prince) called “Manic Monday.” And I think it was a hit because so many people relate to the chorus.

Manic Monday is about someone who wants it to still be Sunday.

See if you can relate to the lyrics in the chorus…

It’s just another manic Monday.
I wish it was Sunday.
‘Cause that’s my fun day,
My I don’t have to run day.
It’s just another manic Monday.

And the second verse shows some of the anxiety connected with the Monday blues.

Have to catch an early train.
Got to be to work by nine.
And if I had an aeroplane.
I still couldn’t make it on time.

At the time I’m posting this it’s Monday morning. And if you’re one of those business owners who wishes it was still Sunday, I can feel your pain.

I remember that feeling, too.

Yeah, it’s true. It was a long time ago, now. But back during my career in the corporate world I had a lot of that same first day of the work week anxiety. And I distinctly remember how much I looked forward to those glorious two weekend days.

But I decided to do something about that. Because, think about it. What’s so terrible about making money? And more of it? Especially when you wanna enjoy the better things in life.

Nothin’ wrong with that. Right?

So, that’s why I developed a System to help me avoid that manic Monday panic. And I soon discovered how much easier it was to do the hard work up front and get organized. Because once I had my System in place, it transformed my life.

No longer did I dread Monday morning. In fact, I looked forward to it. Because I knew my System would keep me on track. I could basically plug my day in and connect the dots with confidence.

How do you avoid problems and bad relationships every chance you get? It’s a simple concept. But not always so easy to do. Right? After all, you don’t necessarily know a bad relationship before it becomes one. And this is true for both business AND personal relationships.

So, how, do you avoid problems before they exist?

Well, as far as personal relationships go, I’m gonna have to leave them up to you. But I’ve got some proven answers for the bad business relationships problems. And, you might not wanna hear it, but they might actually start with you.

No, don’t go away!

I promise I only mean it in a good way. And here’s what I mean. If you’re not truthful with yourself about your core values…or if you’re willing to compromise them, that’s a problem waiting to happen.

But you can avoid most problems with a clear vision.

Do only the work that moves you toward your vision. And only hire people who fit into that vision, too. People who completely understand why you need them to do the job they’ll do in that certain way. Here’s a simple checklist of three steps to keep in mind as you do…

  • Follow your established company values
  • Define your ideal organization roles
  • Hire only those who have the will and attitude to fit 1&2.

Remember…you can teach skills. And here’s a potential big-money saving tip I shared a couple of years ago.

Habits are powerful. And they can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. A couple of years ago I shared a quote from Nathanael Emmons (yes, that’s the correct spelling of his first name). He said, “Habit is either the best of servents, or the worst of masters.”

He certainly understood how habits are powerful.

And his life was a great example of good habits in action. Emmons graduated from Yale in 1767. And that’s back when the requirements to attend college were much more stringent. A student better be able to focus, or he wasn’t likely to succeed.

Mr. Emmons then spent a couple of years, studying theology, under the Reverend John Smalley. And he was ordained as a minister in 1769. Then, from 1773 to 1827, he was the pastor of a church in Massachusetts. And that job required focus and good habits. Because people depended on him to be dependable.

Maybe you can imagine how years of service to a group of people who depended on you might encourage (aka “force”) you to build good habits.

So, I could talk on and on about good habits. And we could nod our heads to each other in agreement. And then we could go our separate ways and back to our habits…good or bad. Because if you don’t recognize or acknowledge how much damage bad habits can cause, you’re not likely to change them.

And bad habits WILL negatively affect your business, at best. And destroy it, at worst.

I talk about bad habits and good habits, a lot, in the RondaReady System.

Because habits are powerful enough to determine your success. Or failure.

Do you find yourself not truly living in the moment when you’re on vacation? Some stats show as much as 80% of business owners and entrepreneurs mix vacation and work. And that’s maybe the biggest issue couples argue about when they’re on vacation. I think that’s sad. Does it happen to you? I sure hope not.

Work time is good. At least if you enjoy work. And vacation time is good. At least if you allow it to be vacation time. And I certainly hope you don’t feel like vacation is just an escape from work. Because that can make both times miserable. And not just for you.

That’s awesome. Peace in your mind. Peace in your soul. Who wouldn’t want that? Right? But when you’re constantly or consistently thinking about another place or another time, that’s just not peaceful.

Your brain needs recovery time from your business. But it shouldn’t be to recover from day-to-day dread. It should be a break from day-to-day problem solving. Like, customer care. Ordering supplies. Phone calls. Emails. And the list goes on.

But vacation doesn’t give you a break from work if you’re still living in the work moments on vacation.

So, how do you vacate work and live in the vacation moments?

I’m not a German or Bavarian. But I’ve heard of Octoberfest. If you’ve been around the block a time or two, you’ve probably heard of it, too. Right? An ad for an Octoberfest celebration in Palm Beach, Florida caught my eye this week. First because I like warm weather places. And second for all the activities.

Apparently an Octoberfest celebration isn’t just about drinking beer.

What?! I’m shocked. But the calendar I saw included an opening ceremony, Parade of Flags, beer keg tapping, and something called Auerhahn Schuhplattler. There were guest appearances from local radio DJ’s and live ethnic style bands. And then there was a steinlifting contest, more beer keg tapping, and more steinlifting on multiple days.

Then, they had something called TrachtenVerein Schuhplattlers. And they followed that up with something else called a HEMA demonstration from a sword school. Finally, there was another beer keg tapping, Parade of Flags, and the closing ceremony.

Wow! That’s a lot of food, drinks, and festivities. Sounds like a lotta fun. And I’m tired and full just from reading about it all.

But something else I thought about as I read about all that fun was how much time, energy, and organizing went into making the whole event a success.

And I know somebody, somewhere, had to put all that together.

Big events like that don’t just happen.

Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, must’ve believed in that old Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared. I read one of his quotes that said, “Before everything else, getting ready is the secret to success.” So, he obviously realized that ready or not time marches on.

And your success (or failure) depends on whether you’re ready or not.

That’s why I call my business, RondaReady. Because I wanna BE ready. And STAY ready. And I don’t wanna have to start from scratch every time I start something new. Milestones and goals aren’t always the same thing. For example, with my post from yesterday, I reached the milestone of 600 posts to my RondaReady.com website. Wow! It’s pretty incredible to realize that’s how many times I’ve added some System information. Quite a milestone. But it was never a goal of mine.

Milestones and goals are different, but they’re both important markers.

And, if you’re a business owner or entrepreneur or wannabe, you gotta have markers. They help you understand and even share your story with your customers and clients.

In your day-to-day life, away from business, I’m sure you can remember a ton of milestones. Right? Certain birthdays. Weddings and anniversaries. How about graduations and promotions. And, of course, the sad things like friends moving away. And even funerals and memorials.

Those are all milestones to help mark the passage of time.

And you can look back, in your mind or photographs or journals, and see where you started and how far you’ve come. That’s probably why so many people like to look through old pictures. (Although those pictures with those trendy hairstyles are not my favorite. Yikes!)

But photographs and journals aren’t the only place to get a clear picture of where you started and how far you’ve come. If you’re a business owner, you can track your progress (or performance) with your System. And you can use the information to plan your next moves.

And those milestones and goals are what I call your…
