Yeah, I’ll never forget the first time I heard that dreaded interview question. “So, where do you see yourself in 5 years?” And I, the little Miss-Organized-Business-Coach didn’t have a well thought out answer. So, I had to get my brain to prepare to move…fast.

True. I had a good interview. And my qualifications were on the money. And luckily I came up with a good enough answer to get the job. But I vowed right there and then…

I’m gonna prepare to move. BEFORE it’s time to move.

Because it’s not just a job interview question. It’s a good idea to have a good idea where you’re going. At least the right direction, even if you don’t quite have a specific destination in mind.

So, you gotta have a clear vision of who you are and where you want to take your business? But if you don’t, it’s so important to get that established as soon as possible. Untrained dog takes business owner for a ride

I saw a young lady walking a big dog this morning. And I felt sorry for her. Because it looked more like that dog was taking her for a walk. Have you ever walked an untrained dog on a leash? Especially one that weighs as much as you?

A big, untrained dog can wear you out faster than you can say “roll over.”

But compare that with dogs that are trained. They learn to be aware of where you are at all times. And they stay close so you hardly even feel the leash in your hand. And that’s a much more enjoyable experience. For you AND the dog. But, according to a dog trainer client of mine, there’s a right way and a wrong way to train a dog.

Of course, if you’ve been following me for a while, ore if you’re a subscriber to my daily emails, you know I don’t talk about dogs to just be talking about dogs.

And, in this case, untrained dogs are an analogy for new employees.

Because new employees can certainly put a strain on your schedule control. But that strain is multiplied if you don’t hire the right person for the right position. And that’s so much more difficult to do if you don’t have a system. Yeah, a system. Not just for hiring. But also for what the new person’s responsibilities will be. And what’s expected of them.

Believe it or not, people like to know what’s expected of them.

But most people prefer that information to be dependable. Something they can refer to over and over again without sudden, unexpected changes.

And those changes can happen when you “shoot from the hip.” But they almost never happen when you have a process for hiring (and firing) clearly set up in your system.

It might sound like a terrible thing to have to set up…and, in a way, it is…but I can pretty much guarantee you will always regret it if you don’t have a section for it in your Operations Manual. You do have one of those, don’t you? But that’s for another time.

I need you to help me. But before I tell you how and why, I wanna tell you about a client of mine who gave out free advice all the time.

And I hope this description doesn’t fit you.

If you’ve ever been in the position of just answering a lot of questions with a potential client, you’re playing the free advice game. And that costs too much. And you’re the one who pays. But never worry. Never fear.

Because I’m gonna get you to help me to help you avoid this situation.

So here’s what happened.

In the course of our time together I’ve helped my client build systems and processes to avoid the free advice situation.

But wouldn’t you know it? He fell back into his old habit. He’s a nice guy, and he wants to help. So, he started answering a few questions with potential clients. Then, those few questions turned into a few more. And before he knew it, his whole consultation calls were turning into Q and A sessions. His own troubleshooter’s hotline.

Not a good position to be in.

And that’s why I say free advice costs too much. Because it costs you time. And that’s something which is in extremely limited supply. It’s so important to build relationships before you start giving out much of your knowledge. Yes, you need to show your potential client or customer you care. But you can do that much more effectively by asking questions instead of answering them.

When you’re the one asking the questions, it does two things right off the bat. It shows the other person you’re truly interested in learning more about their business, their needs, their life.

And it helps you come up with better solutions for them.

Another thing…and this is SO important. It helps you stay in control of your precious time. And when you do that, you help me to help you help yourself.

That’s a whole lotta help.

I’ve shared this saying, I’ve heard, before. And maybe you’ve heard it, too. “What got you here won’t get you there.” Here…is where you are now. In your life. And in your business. There…is where you prefer to be. So, it makes sense to say if you want to get from here to there, you gotta do something different. And you gotta also do something daily.

But how do you know what to do as you do something daily?

Well, here’s an example, I’ve shared before, with a guy who definitely did something daily. And he figured out what he’d have to do differently.

Bob (not his real name) was a potential new client. He and I met a couple of years ago. And we talked about how I could possibly help him get from where he currently was in his business to where he wanted to go.

So, first the good news. Bob started out as a solopreneur, a one-man band you might say. And in only seven years, he built his business up to the point of having 10 employees. Pretty impressive. Right?

But here’s the bad news (if you wanna call it that). After working hard for seven years, he didn’t just run a business anymore. He also had to manage 10 employees.

If you’ve never been in that position, it’s not as easy as it sounds.

So, what Bob did to get to the point where he had to manage 10 employees wasn’t gonna cut it anymore. He knew he had to do something different. But he wasn’t sure what.

And that’s where I came in.

I helped him set up a system with automated and repeatable processes to help get him out of the day-to-day tasks. And that was much different from what Bob had been doing. So, my System helped him do something different. And that helped him leverage his time and focus.

And when you leverage time and focus, you can do something daily for the business you dreamed about.

Do something daily and do something different with a proven System.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it. But there was this little, obscure TV show, from the 90’s, called “Friends.” Ever hear of it or watch it? If so, do you remember the pivot episode? That’s where Ross, Rachel, and Chandler are taking a sofa upstairs? And they had to make the turn, in the stairs, to get the sofa one level above. So, Ross kept yelling, “Pivot, pivot, pivot!” And Chandler’s frustration got the best of him, and he finally yelled, “Shut up, shut up, shut up!”

It was hilarious. And probably because we’ve all had a similar experience.

I’m only sharing that because it’s “hump day.” And some of you Type A’s might be focused on how much work you’re gonna get done now. And how much you’ll do this weekend. 

Nothing particularly wrong with that. In fact, if you’ve got some momentum and things are going well, and you just plain love the work, go for it. But I like to encourage business owners and entrepreneurs to pivot once in a while.

Especially if you wanna get at least one level above where you are now.

And a great pivot would be to get out of your daily groove and get out and move.

Go see a movie. Or hike in the mountains…or wherever you like to hike if you don’t have mountains where you are. Get a change of scenery. And do some things in a different order. Or eat a different kind of lunch.

The main point is this.

When you make an occasional pivot from the routine, you can get refreshed. And you can go back to work with a new perspective. Sometimes you don’t even realize you need to do it until you actually do it.

Now, I certainly understand what it’s like to get in the groove and not want to stop. Especially when you’re trying to build your business. And when you work to get more out of life. But I still encourage you to be the star of your own pivot episode. And when you do, let me know how it went.

It’s every business owner and entrepreneur’s dream. More time off work without sacrificing money. But when you start out as do-it-yourselfer entrepreneur, it’s hard to imagine working less AND making more money. Believe me, I get it. I’ve been there and certainly done that.

Ironically, more time off work takes more hard work.

But that hard work doesn’t have to take so much time. Especially when you set up a system for more consistent business. Black Friday 2021. Wow! Doesn’t seem possible that we’re here already. Last year, at this time, I said I thought the year had rocket boosters attached. Well, this year I think Scotty, from the Starship Enterprise, beamed us from January 1 to now. A total time travel transport.

And, I don’t know about you, but Black Friday 2021 doesn’t sound like fun.

With everything going on in the world, I can’t say I’m ready to jump into a packed store with a bunch of other bargain hunters. Call me crazy, but I much prefer the idea of working on my business today.

Last year I also shared a report, by some British scientists from the University of Cambridge, that said working only 8 hours a week is optimum. And my first response was “What?! Are you kidding me?”

But, to be fair, their findings talked about how the “most effective dose” of work, for mental health, was about a day a week. Yeah, you’re reading that right. One day a week. And their study apparently showed that unemployed people who work at a job only 8 hours a week reduce their risk of mental health problems.

This appeared to be true of stay-at-home parents who got a job. And the mental health risk was reduced by an average of 30%. Plus, the scientists reported that working more than eight hours didn’t increase mental health benefits at all.

But I’m calling for a foul. Where’s that buzzer sound?

Because I’ve never seen any reports of millionaires and billionaires reaching their goals by working only 8 hours a week. In fact, my guess is you’d have a hard time finding one who worked only 8 hours a day. At least until they reached a level of success where they could delegate work to hired help.

And of all the successful business owners I’ve read about, I’ve never read about one who was able to reach their goals without a system and a plan. And here’s how I tie that in with Black Friday 2021.

I’m gonna make this a regular Friday.

Just like all the other regular Fridays of the year. And I don’t need magical powers to change today into a regular Friday. I simply get up and get to work on my business.

During a trip to Chicago, way way back in the first decade of the twentieth century, Henry Ford visited some meat-packing houses in Chicago. And he remembered a grain mill conveyor belt from another visit. And so he took some meat and grain and made the first Model T. Just kidding (as if you didn’t already know that). No, actually Mr. Ford’s observations helped him figure out a way to save energy when it came to building cars.

Turns out you can save energy when you don’t move around so much.

Wow. Is that a complex concept or what?!

Well, it’s really a simple concept. But not one that anyone had applied to building cars, up to that point. And Henry Ford wanted to build more cars so more Americans could drive them. But he needed a system to help him do that faster and more efficiently.

So, Mr. Ford figured if he could bring the work to the workers, he could save them (and his business) energy AND money. Because they’d spend less time moving around looking for parts and tools. Then, he took it steps further. Literally. By breaking down the assembly of his Model T into 84 individual steps.

And each assembly line worker specialized in one of those steps.

Brilliant. And simple.

Put that simple brilliance to work for you.
