There’s more than one kind of line. And most people don’t like most lines. Right? But the kind that pretty much everybody DOES like are those open lines of communication. Because everybody likes to feel like they’re being heard. Who could argue with that?

But lines of communication don’t just magically appear.

They have to be created. And maintained. Some say nurtured. Doesn’t matter. The point is, you gotta stay in touch or risk losing a lot more than “touch.”

A couple of years ago I mentioned how one of my clients got an email from a customer who said, “______ uncomfortable in the dark.” I left the first part blank to protect my client’s privacy. But there are any number of scenarios you could use to fill in the blank. And none of them would be good.

But what did it mean? Her customer needed to hear from her about what’s going on. And even if things weren’t going well, it would have been so much better if she kept those lines of communication open and flowing.

Even though you can’t control all the expectations, especially when other services are involved, you CAN communicate. Because communication is a way to show you actually care.

Your clients or customers need to feel secure.

And they need to believe they can trust you. Because they wanna be sure they made the best choice when they hired you. So, when you don’t do your best to answer their questions and concerns, you bend or break that trust. And sometimes you can’t get it back.

When you make yourself scarce, accidentally or on purpose, don’t be surprised when people cancel contracts with you. Or when they give you poor reviews. And they certainly won’t be referring you to anyone. And can you blame them? Would you refer people you care about to someone like that?

But the good news is…you can avoid a lot of that with open lines of communication.

If you pay attention, you probably understand what your clients might be going through. Or at least you can empathize. So, let them know that. Yesterday I talked about Dessert Day. And now I’m talkin’ about Students Day. So, yeah. I found a calendar full of odd, bizarre, and unusual holidays. But it’s fun reading. And it shows you how we humans like to find a reason to celebrate just about anything.

Students Day was started to acknowledge how hard they work.

And I have three students in my house (4 if you include me…and I do). So, I know how much learning and hard work goes into the daily life of a student.

But, like when I mentioned including me as a student, learning is a lifelong endeavor. Especially if and when you have dreams and a vision for your life. And who doesn’t have those? Dreams and visions require hard work, dedication, and passion. I’ll bet those words describe you. Right?

And I found out today isn’t just Students Day. Ironically it’s also Boss Day (or Boss’ Day…or Boss’s Day). I say “ironically” because where do bosses come from? Yeah, they all were students once upon a time.

In fact, all good bosses never stop being students.

When you think about all a boss has to do, it’s no wonder that it’s a lifelong course. Learn and develop skills. Build a platform. Find a market. And get clients. And keep clients happy so you can get more. Serve well with good communication.

Mm…cheesecake. No wait…raspberry torte. But hold on…fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. If you’re like me, your mouth starts watering just thinking about your favorite treats. Am I right? Well, somebody oughta come up with a dessert day holiday.

Come to think of it…today is Dessert Day. (no kidding)

Yay! ‘Scuse me while I head to the pastry shop.

Just kidding. I gotta get some work done. And the desserts will have to wait.

You might be wondering why your favorite business coach is talkin’ about Dessert Day. Well, duh. Who doesn’t like desserts? But actually it’s because I read a little about how this “holiday” got started.

Well, wouldn’t you know? The word “dessert” comes from the French word “desservir.” Yeah, the French know a thing or two about treats. But that word means “to clear the table.” And they used to do that at the end of the main courses before they served the finishing treats.

Apparently the French came up with the concept of serving meals in courses. They started meals with sweet wine as an aperitif. So, it only made sense to finish the meal in a sweet way, too. Hey, who am I to argue?

But…back to the reason I share information with you. And that’s business talk. Yeah, I know. It’s gonna be difficult to concentrate with visions of cake, pie, cookies, and ice cream in your head. But this about how you can make sure you enjoy those even more…if that’s your thing.

For a long time, desserts were something only the wealthy enjoyed.

Fortunately, once it was easier to get sugar and honey to the masses, we could all get a slice of the pie (see what I did there?).

But you might have noticed prices continue to go in the blue sky direction. UP. So, it’s good to keep building your business UP, too. And there’s no time like the present to get more control of your schedule so you can focus on  what you do best. And how to serve others well with your skills and talents.

Somebody asked me if I could show them “some good time management hacks.” Of course, “hacks” are all the rage. Because everybody wants to find out the quickest, shortest, and easiest route to success. But I hope you can see it’s not the best way to look at life or business.

Time management hacks even sounds wrong. Right?

It sure does to me. Because I get a mental picture of someone trying to chop down some weeds with a rusty, broken gardening tool. Not a good use of your time.

I read an article that shared some time management advice from some high profile people. And one that stood out was from Mary Callahan Erdoes, chief executive officer of asset management at JPMorgan Chase & Co. That’s a position that deals with a ton of money. So, you can imagine how important it is to be able to manage time.

She said,

“Calendar management is the single most important thing, especially as you get busy and have more responsibilities. You have to be maniacally focused on owning your calendar, on having the lists of what you need from other people and what other people need from you. What are the short-term issues that need to be dealt with? What are the long-term issues? Unless you can stay on top of that religiously, it will end up owning you, and that’s not a way to go about staying organized and being on top of things.”

I especially like that part where she said “maniacally focused on owning your calendar.” Because, like she said, if you don’t, it’ll end up “owning you.”

And I’ve been saying that same thing, for over 20 years, in my RondaReady System. Because focus and time management go hand-in-hand. But there’s absolutely no reason to try to keep all the lists, calendar notes, and issues in your head. In fact, I’d say 99.999% of people can’t do that anyway.

Time is free. But waste it and see if it feels free. Money is not free. It will cost you time.

But time is free. So, how do you get out of this vicious circle?

Well, I think you’ve got to decide what’s more important to you. Time? Or money? And don’t misread that. I didn’t say either one of them is NOT important. But which one is more so?

Here are some perspectives for comparison.

You can’t make more time. No matter how hard you work. And no matter how well you take care of yourself. You and I have time limits. (I hate those, don’t you?)

And even though there’s virtually no limit to how much money you can make, there ARE limits as to how much you can buy with it. That’s true for both rich and poor people. And I read, somewhere, that you can do more with a day off than with a day’s pay.

Wow, I like that.

The idea is that…well…ideas you get (and information you can load into your brain) from taking a day off are way more lasting and valuable than what money can buy. Have you noticed that in your own life?

Plus, no amount of money you ever make will ever be able to buy you even a second time. Matter of fact, I don’t recall ever seeing a store that sold time. Hmm…could that be a clue?

Yes, it’s a fact. You can lose every dime to your name and spring back and make more. But you can never get back the time you spend. Even if you spent your time wisely.

And here’s an interesting perspective. You need time to spend money. But you don’t need money to spend time.

Whoa. That’s deeper than it sounds.

Billionaires have more money than one lifetime even needs. So, in a sense, they don’t have enough time for their money (not such a bad problem to have by the way). So, how important do you think they believe time is? Yeah, there have been lots of quotes from rich people who, at the end of their life, wished they had more time.

Here’s one more perspective.

There’s an old saying that goes, “Time heals all wounds.” I think I’d leave out the “all” part. But essentially it’s true. Because your body needs time to heal physical wounds. And emotional and mental wounds can be healed with the passing of time and increased wisdom.

So, basically, to coin an old credit card commercial, time is priceless. So valuable you can’t put a price on it. Because time is free for a limited time.

And that brings up why I bring it up.

Because, unfortunately, too many entrepreneurs and business owners spend a huge amount of their precious time doing things that won’t make them more money. And certainly won’t buy more time. That’s because they don’t automate, delegate, and systemize.

And that’s why I’ve spent over 20 years of my life helping as many as I could get off that hamster wheel. And get plugged into a System that can help them spend time more efficiently and make more money.

It can be liberating. To say the least. But even investing in a tried and proven System can be too expensive for entrepreneurs and business owners who want the easy, quick riches. I’ve recently talked about how the anxiety and depression of high school kids has hit close to home in the past few years. And one survey said those two things (anxiety and depression) were the number 1 issue for about 70% of teens in the survey. And many of them are anxious and depressed because they don’t know what they’re gonna do after high school.

Because real life comes after high school.

A computer nerd friend and I were talking, the other day, about how far computers have come since he first got into ’em. For example he went on about how easy it is to drag and drop files from one place to another. And he said, “Can you believe we weren’t able to do that…and not so long ago?”

Yeah, we take drag and drop functions for granted now.

In fact, the same day I had that talk with my computer friend I had to move some files. And each time I clicked on one to drag it into another folder, I thought about how easy it was. Even with huge files.

But, because I focus so much on business, I thought about two clients and what was going on in their businesses a couple of years ago. One of them had set up processes (using my RondaReady System) and made his business practically drag and drop easy. The other client felt like her whole business was a drag. And she was about ready to drop it.

The difference between the two business owners was the System. Or lack of one.

So, one client told me “it felt so good to have my processes in place.” And the other client told me how “frustrated and worried” she was because of overdue accounts.

Nobody wants to have to deal with that problem.

And I wish I could say that problem is rare. But lots of business owners are “frustrated and worried.” It’s gotta be a horrible feeling to know you’ve got money floating around, uncollected. Because your day-to-day operations require cashflow. Right?

This morning I thought about a client who told me the recovery calendar I helped her set up “has been a lifesaver.” Before we started working together, she just never sat down and planned time off. So, she never took time off. That’s a recipe for burnout. Maybe not for everybody. But certainly for many.
