So, maybe the ultimate anti woulda coulda song is “My Way.” It’s actually a famous song written by three French songwriters. And then, the more well-known English lyrics were written by Paul Anka. And famous versions were sung by Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.

The first verse shows why I call it the ultimate anti woulda coulda song.

And now, the end is near.
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I’ll say it clear.
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain.
I’ve lived a life, a life that’s full.
I traveled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Yeah, that sounds like someone who lived a life on his or her own terms. Right? And another adds another reinforcing perspective.

Regrets, I’ve had a few.
But then again, too few to mention.

And the song goes on to show how the person lived a full life. And it’s a life so full that the main regret is that it’s almost over.

So, some time ago I shared a list of 7 things that business owners said were their greatest regrets. And here’s the list counted down from least regretted to most.

7. Set prices too low
6. And increased prices too fast
5. Focused on revenue. And not profit
4. Didn’t focus on sales enough
3. Didn’t know who the right customers were
2. No market analysis ahead of time
1. And shoulda started sooner

Sure, most of the list is about the money and the market.

But the number one regret is all about TIME.

And, it makes total sense. Right? Because lost time is something you can never get back. Because it’s gone. Despite what all those entertaining sci-fi movies would have you believe. No, lost time is lost. And it WILL trigger woulda coulda thoughts.

So, the best solution to avoid those thoughts is to get to work on your dreams and vision while you’re young. Or if you’re not young, maybe help someone, who’s young, get started right now. Because wouldn’t it be awesome to help them have fewer regrets when they get much further along in their life?

And I agree.

A lot of teenagers choose to get a job, when they graduate. Because their school days are too long and boring. And they didn’t enjoy grade school, middle school, and high school. So, why even think about going to college. It’ll just be more of the same.

Yes, most traditional school days ARE too long.

And that’s because traditional schools don’t help you become the best YOU possible. Because they’re not set up to focus on you. And that includes all of them. From elementary to university.

And that can be a very good reason to get a job.

Because, with a job, you can start earning money, right away, instead of spending tons of it. Because, in case you hadn’t noticed, college is expensive, with a capital $ (dollar sign). And for many, if not most, students, college equals a huge loan.

Does that sound like a fun path to take after your high school graduation?

Plus, when you choose a job instead of college, you can get some serious real life experience right away. And that’s important because you’re gonna need to know about real life and how economies work, whether you go to school or not.

Also, when you get a job, you can get something you longed for, while you lived in your parents’ house. And that’s the i word. Independence. As I share this info we’re still in the first couple of weeks of 2023. And the start of a new year is a great time to start a new path.

What was going on twenty years ago? Well, back then, the average cost of a house, in America, was about $229k. And average annual income was about $43k. And the cost of a gallon of gas was around $1.61.

Kelly Clarkson had just won the first American Idol contest. The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Spiderman were big at the box office. And some popular musicians of the day were County Crows, Eminem, Avril Lavigne, and even Madonna, The Rolling Stones, and Shania Twain.

Oh yeah, another thing. I started my RondaReady System. It wasn’t called that then. But that’s what it is now.

But what wasn’t going on twenty years ago?

Well, no iPhone or Google. And Amazon was still mostly an online bookstore.

So, obviously a lot can change in twenty years.

Especially YOU. And your life. Or at least it should.

But you can’t do anything about those previous twenty years. And you shouldn’t even wanna try. Because today is the next best time to change your direction. I remember a client of mine telling me how he wished he’d started a System like mine “twenty years ago.”

I read an article that asked the question, “What do you think your future self would say to you?” And I enjoyed a few of the wide variety of answers. But one of them made me stop and read it again. Because it wasn’t funny. And it wasn’t optimistic.

Here’s what the young woman, who wrote it, said…

“Hey. I need to hear from you. And I mean, like as soon as possible. Because I’m sick and tired of where we ended up. And I sure don’t like having to use all this information you put in my head to just figure out how I’m gonna pay the rent.

Why aren’t you making a bunch more effort to push toward your dreams? And why in the world are you still in that miserable job you hate? Sure, it’s easy to stick with what you know. And sure, maybe it’s the socially acceptable thing to do. But the safe way didn’t end well for us.

You gotta get your designer career moving. And, trust me, without some sort of system, you’re gonna keep me here in this dump. Your kids are grown now. And they never come to visit. They’re ‘too busy.’ Just like you are now at that wonderful job. You’re gonna miss all their activities. And your lack of quality time with your Husband? Well, let’s just say, this TV dinner for one is not my idea of gourmet.

I know you feel like giving up. All the negative responses can make you feel like that. But keep going. YOU CAN DO IT. And I really, really, really need you to get me out of here.

PS. I promise. You won’t like this neighborhood.”

Wow. That sounded pretty bleak. Right?

Sure, I could share some interesting tidbits of info about how the women’s suffrage movement got a boost on this day in 1878. And I could share how Katharine Burr Blodgett became the first woman to earn her Ph.D. in physics from Cambridge University and the first female scientist hired by General Electric. Because that was on this date (January 10) back in 1898. But I wanna talk about something much more delightful. It’s National Bittersweet Chocolate Day.

But I only mention it because bittersweet chocolate is good for you.

And I care about your health. Studies show bittersweet chocolate can lower blood pressure and help protect your heart. So, there you have it. Now, indulge your chocolate cravings knowing that you’re simply protecting your heart.

The process to make delicious chocolate is very interesting. Especially when you consider the original cacao beans are extremely bitter. And here’s what happens:

  • Seeds are fermented
  • Then, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted.
  • And, after roasting, the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs.
  • The cacao nibs are then ground into a cocoa mass which is pure chocolate in rough form.
  • And cocoa mass can be liquefied and molded into chocolate liquor
  • Then, the chocolate liquor can be processed into cocoa solids and cocoa butter.

 

Is it just me? Or is anybody else in the mood for some chocolate chip cookies?

Sorry. Back to the reason I brought up this “national observance day.”

It shows how even the delicious things we take for granted go through a process. And they can start out bitter (translate: struggling) and end up irresistible (translate: successful).

And that’s how it is in the real world of business and work. It can be a huge struggle to get a profitable business started. And that’s why many, if not most, give up and go find a job.

But successful business owners will tell you how they committed to being lifelong students. When you think about all a boss has to do, it’s no wonder that it’s a lifelong course. So, learn and develop skills. And build a platform. Find a market. And get clients. And keep clients happy so you can get more. Serve well with good communication.

And that’s just a scratch on the surface of what goes on in a successful business. Those owners and CEO’s all have these things in common. They focused on their vision, they developed real skills for real life, and they built (or plugged into) a system.

On a few occasions I’ve talked about how the anxiety and depression of high school kids has certainly been on my radar the past few years. And one survey said anxiety and depression are the main issues for about 70% of teens surveyed. And many of them are anxious and depressed because they don’t know what they’re gonna do after high school.

Because after you finish high school, things get mighty real. Mom and dad don’t pay your rent, buy your food, or maintain your car.

You do.

And you’ll have a difficult time, at best, without a plan. Especially if your vision for yourself doesn’t fit into the so-called “normal path.” And the “normal path,” usually means college or no college. Imagine. Only two choices. Same ol’ same ol’. Blah, blah, blah.

OK, who’s even more anxious and depressed now?

From my personal experience, I can say it’s crucial for parents and teens to communicate, openly, about options and decisions for life after high school.

Because we live in a time when young people have incredible options. And most of them didn’t even exist when we parents were in school.

Almost all ultra successful people have this exceptionally rare, yet extremely important, skill. And I’ve noticed less successful people don’t seem to go for this real life skill. In fact, they usually end up settling for a less than a satisfactory job or income. And that usually doesn’t line up with their gifts and talents.

And you don’t want that, even if you don’t wanna be ultra successful.

But, before I reveal what this skill is I’d like to share why it’s so important to me to share it with you. In 2021 something happened, in my life, that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

And it motivated me to take what I teach my 6 and 7-figure clients and condense it down to the student level. Because my son had two friends, in two years, who both committed suicide. When I got that tragic news, I was horrified. Then I started to think how that could have easily been my son, too.

When he shared what he was going through, his feelings of anxiety, lack of purpose, and overwhelm hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks. And I determined, right then, that my kids needed to know how to find their purpose.

Because they didn’t have the real life skill they needed to prepare for success in the future.

And that skill is called System Thinking.

It’s how you learn to gather up the puzzle pieces in your mind. And how you learn to fit them together and solve problems. System thinking helps you discover how to make what I call precision decisions. Those are the decisions that line up with what can help you be happy and successful.

You’ve heard about ’em, right? Side hustles. That’s the recent slang for work you can do “on the side.” Or in addition to what you’re doing. Or something you can do till something better comes along. And the good news is, these days, they can turn into a full-time business. Plus, they can be awesome college alternatives.

Take these side hustles for example:

How about a drop-shipping business? If you’re good at sales and marketing, but you’d rather not build and maintain a warehouse, this could be your side hustle. When you drop-ship, it just means you can set up a website where customers buy your stuff. And the stuff gets shipped by the manufacturer or actual retailer. Look up drop-ship and you’ll get lots of ideas.

Maybe you’re creative. And maybe you’d like to actually sell your cool stuff. These days you’ve got lots of options to sell your physical goods online. And you don’t even have to start your own store. You could set up a profile on sites like eBay, Etsy, and Pinterest. And you could use Shopify for your direct transactions.

But maybe you’d rather not have to deal with shipping a bunch of physical stuff all over the place. No problem. Go digital. And again, you don’t have to even build your own website to start (I recommend one as soon as you can afford it, though.) If you’re good at graphic design, audio or video editing, web design, or you have other digital skills, post videos of you in action on YouTube. And take your designs up a notch with print on demand.

Check into Printful and Fiverr and Upwork. Lots of other platforms like those, too.

And I’m just scratching the surface on side hustles.

There’s writing work, proofreading work, virtual assistant work, transcription services, and even teaching. But one thing I recommend is that you figure out who YOU are. Figure out what YOU want to do with your life. And make sure you focus on what YOU can do and where YOU want to go.

Those are the starting points for anyone who’s interested in a more focused approach to life than most colleges provide. And those are reasons why I created RondaReady YOUniversity. Glamor and money. Now, those are some things you can really sink your teeth into. Right? And who would turn down more of either one of those? And they’re the reasons Arlete Turturro started her own business.

Her story is filled with glamour and money.

And all I need to do to prove that point is to share a little bit of her story. Because what finally got Arlete in the glamorous winner’s circle was her cleaning service. She started with residential homes. Then she added offices and commercial cleaning.

Sound glamorous yet?

Keep in mind, we’re not just talking about some high school dropout with no other options. Far from it. Because Ms Turturro got a degree in merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology. And she went to Queens College in New York and nabbed a real estate license. No small things, right?

But, apparently, Arlete changed her mind, several times, before she established her cleaning business. And that’s when she started cleaning homes and offices on the weekends. At first she did that to supplement her bank account and fund her ideas. But her hard worked finally paid off.

And sh turned her Night Owl Cleaning services into a hugely successful business. Then, she branched out with other services. Her organizational and delegation skills earned her a Woman of the Year award, in 2004, in her local area.

So, did any of that happen because Arlete wanted glamor and money?

I haven’t personally spoken with her. But my guess is she discovered a business she could skillfully develop to serve others well. And that’s the key to success. Not being glamorous. And not seeking riches. Just serve others well. And then more will find their way to you.

But then, you’ve gotta make sure you have a System to stay organized and in control. Because when your business takes off, it can get out of control pretty quickly if you just “shoot from the hip.”

Failure to set up a business system, early on, is a recipe for disaster.
