Do you use a grocery list when it’s time to go get food for the family? Well, whether you do or you don’t, I bet you’ve noticed the same thing as most everybody else through the decades. Prices tend to go up. And up. Right?

To prove my point, check out these grocery list items from the 1930’s.

Do you like ham sandwiches? Back in 1932, you could’ve gotten a pound of sliced ham, in Ohio (and most other places) for about 39 cents a pound. And how about eggs? Yes, you could’ve gotten a dozen of those for 18 cents. A dozen! Are you kidding me?!

But that’s not all. Not by a long shot. How about a jar of peanut butter for 23 cents. No, that’s not the tax. It’s the total price. And you could’ve gotten a whole loaf of bread to spread that peanut butter on for only a nickel. 5 cents! I kid you not.

Remember that run on paper towels and toilet tissue last spring and summer? Imagine being able to get a 4 pack of the tissue for 18 cents. Or a tube of toothpaste for 27 cents. And how about a pound of bacon (Don’t know about you, but I’m getting hungry) for 38 cents? What?! I don’t think you can get a slice for that price now.

Back in 1937, in Indiana (and most every other place) you could get two dozen oranges for a quarter. Or four cans of Campbell tomato soup for a quarter. And even three packages of Kellogg’s corn flakes for a quarter.

Wow, times have certainly changed.

A friend of mine told me about when you could make a local phone call on something called a payphone for a dime. And he said everyone was “outraged” when that cost went up to a quarter and eventually 50 cents. If you can even find a payphone, these days, you probably better have your debit or credit card with you.

Yep, there’s almost nothing for 50 cents anymore.

Unless you’re interested in building your own business.

It’s really the old Do versus Don’t debate. Or the Positive versus Negative. And I’m talking about how to get more done in your business day. Because I just read an article that shared what they called 3 Productivity Tricks To Help You Stay On Track. But what I noticed was how each “trick” was about how to not do something.

And I think productivity tricks aren’t all that helpful.

Because they don’t get to the root problem. Sure, interruptions and distractions and pointless meetings can pop up all the time. But how do they really throw you off track?

My theory (which was formed out of years of business coaching) is…if you’re easily thrown off track by distractions, it’s probably because you use tricks instead of tools. Yesterday, in another place online, I shared a picture of Earth with an arrow across it. It showed the distance across is 7926 miles. And I said “People have gone from one side to the other…and from top to bottom…and all around and back. But every person who ever traveled those long distances started with the first step.”

And to go the distance, there are all those other steps after the first step.

So, while the first one’s crucial, you gotta keep movin’. And, coincidentally, a well-known marketing guy, Seth Godin, wrote about those other steps on one of his latest blog posts. Because he saw some guys laying bricks outside his window, and he said…

There’s a lot of the do as I say but not as I do stuff going on out there in the business world. Plenty of marketing “experts” are selling programs and materials to help you do what they’re not actually doing themselves. Way back when, those kinds of people were called snake oil salesmen. And con men. And grifters and swindlers. But those are just “old-fashioned” words for people who wanna separate you from your hard-earned wealth.

And now, here I am suggesting you do as I say.

So, I got a nice email from a lady who took a business class I used to host. She had asked me to talk to a friend of hers about some of the same business info. And I was glad to help out. In the exciting and dream-pursuing world of business, most people give up. Yeah, you read that right. Because most people don’t have what it takes to succeed in business. And that could be because they never had a dream in the first place. Or it could be because they never found out how to RUN a business.

And most people give up because learning is hard.

Wanna know the best reason to start your own business? Well, because it’s glamorous. And the second best reason is all that moolah you’ll you’ll be raking in. (cue the record scratch sound) Hold on! Let’s get just a little bit more real over here. I just read a business success story that’ll shed some true light on the subject.

Arlete Turturro can tell you a thing or two about what it’s like to start your own business.

And she can probably tell you that glamour and money weren’t exactly her starting points. Because what finally got going for her was a cleaning service. First it was homes. Then came offices and commercial cleaning.

Sound glamorous yet?
