Money is fluid.

The more you try to hold onto it, the more elusive it is. I learned this a long time ago. And it’s good to remind yourself of wise things…or be willing to be reminded of them. Saying money is fluid is more than just a catchy sound bite. It’s actually true. Money, like fluid, needs to flow in order to be of good use to individuals and economies.

My daughter discovered an every day example of how money is fluid.

I had a conversation, about this, with my daughter the other day after enjoying a nice lunch together in one of our favorite restaurants. The subject of tipping the wait staff came up. My daughter offered to pay the tab, but she said she felt like tipping was spending too much.

I brought up the old saying, “What goes around, comes around.” And I added how money is definitely no exception. When you want people to spend more on your products, services, or information…or even to remember you, it stands to reason you should be doing the same for them.

That’s how economies blossom and flourish.

Matter of fact, the more people try to hold on to money, the less effective an economy is. Think of it this way…if no one went to Walmart to spend any money, how could they keep even one store open? Much less become a giant retail force. You might not be a retail giant…or ever want to be…but you DO want people to pay you for your hard work. Right? Then, it stands to reason you should be doing the same. In fact, if you don’t go spend some of your money, you won’t get any new things. And where’s the fun in that?

So, here’s to learning how to make a lot of money while, at the same time, keeping a spirit of generosity. Give value – get value.

That’s how money is fluid.

From Here to There

There’s a saying I’ve heard a lot of times that goes: “What got you here won’t get you there.” Here…it’s where you are now. There…it’s where you want to be or you’d rather be. So, it makes sense to say if you want to get from here to there, you gotta do something different. And I keep seeing this in my client meetings. Here’s an example:

Bob (not his real name) is a potential new client. He and I met, a few days ago, to talk about how I could possibly help him get from where he currently is with his business to where he wants to go.

The good news is, Bob started out as a solopreneur, a one-man band you might say. And in only seven years, he built his business up to the point of having 10 employees.

The bad news (if you wanna call it that) is…now, he finds himself in a position of not only having to run a business, but also having to manage 10 employees.

Not as easy as it sounds.

What got him to where he is now won’t help him manage 10 employees. He’s gotta do something different. And that’s actually a good thing because it’ll mean setting up a system with automated and repeatable processes to help get him out of the day-to-day tasks. To get from Here to There, he needs to leverage his time and focus.

Bold and brave.

Those are two words I think of most often to describe entrepreneurs I have the privilege to work with. After all, for most people, going “out on your own” is just a dream. And few (the bold and brave) follow through with action to make their dreams come true. And I love helping those risk takers because they inspire me to keep on keepin’ on, too.

Bold and brave people gave us freedom to be entrepreneurs.

Think about how much of the world can’t pursue their creativity. And all the people who will possibly never know what it’s like to build a business and make money based on a dream. In America, we pretty much take it for granted that we can do those things if we truly want to. But we should never forget how much our freedom cost. More than we’ll ever be able to repay. So, what we CAN do is work hard to pass on our freedom to future generations. Make sure they can pursue their dreams. Follow their passions. Have hope for each new day.

Independence Day, the 4th of July here in America, is the perfect time to acknowledge the bold and brave men and women who served our country and helped provide and protect our freedom. Because of them you and I are able to take risks, start our own businesses, and make a better life for ourselves and our families.

So, I’m here to celebrate the bold, the brave, the free, and the entrepreneurs. And I want to especially remember all the wonderful people I’ve personally worked with who help keep the dreams of freedom alive every day. I’m thankful for you, and I salute you.

Sharks Are Circling – Swim Faster

Do you ever feel like the sharks are circling you and your business? I’m talking about that overwhelming sense of not being in control. Where so many distractions and interruptions become like blood in the water and here come those sharks to take you away.

I talked with a client, recently, who’s been going through that. Of course, I know she shouldn’t be going through that because she’s so good at what she does. So, we went over her schedule of a typical day. As it turned out, she just needed better control of her activities, and I showed her how “batching” them can help alleviate that feeling of losing control.

When the sharks are circling, batch

Batching’s just another way of saying you’ll keep the same kinds of tasks together and do a bunch of them at the same time. The reason it works so well and helps you be more productive is because you don’t have to shift gears so much. Like sending out emails. Instead of doing one or a few of those every day, set up a time when you’ll do them all. Then you’ll be in that gear, and you won’t have to move back and forth between programs or apps.

Or how about scheduling all your phone calls for the same time each day. That way, phone calls won’t feel like an interruption. You’ll be getting to them on purpose, and you’ll be more focused on sales or customer service or whatever. 

The time blocking tool in my RondaReady CRM system helped my client batch those daily tasks. And she told me, today, instead of feeling like the sharks are circling she feels like she’s safe in her speed boat.
