You might remember the 80’s band, Human League. And you might also remember they sang a song about how dreams are made of these “cash to spend, New York, ice cream and good times.” Yes! I’ll take all of the above!

Maybe your dreams are made of these:

  • Buying your own home
  • Taking good care of your loved ones
  • Vacations that last longer than one week a year
Dreams don’t always have to be flashy good times. In fact, for many people, dreams are quite the opposite. Just having a better life where you can afford all the necessities…and a few perks now and then. The point is, you don’t have to dream huge, or even big. You can dream normal life stuff. After all, they’re YOUR dreams. And I want to encourage you to follow them with all your heart.
A few short years ago, my dream was to build my own business and be independent enough to stay home with my kids. It took a lot of hard work and determination…and moving to another state. But I made it. And I’ve never regretted my choice to leave the corporate 8 to 5 world behind.  
Once I saw I had a repeatable system for building my business better, I decided to help others build theirs better, too. I’ve seen a wide variety of dreams that motivate my clients. Some have wanted to build an even bigger business. Others wanted and needed help getting their fairly successful business back under control. And still others needed to know they could make money and not sell their souls.

See ya later, calculator

See ya later calculator is just my funny way of saying “check your numbers”. I’m not a mathematician, but when it comes to building business better and changing moods, I love math. Pure numbers can be your dependable guide, and this was so true in a conversation I had with a client of mine today. He’s been looking into hiring a new member to his team, but he’s been reluctant to hand over some of his daily tasks and pay someone else to do them.

So, I said, “Count the money. Focus on the income you plan to make over the next year. And think about how you could get there more efficiently if you focus on the $300 an hour tasks and let someone else focus on the $10 an hour tasks.” Those high dollar tasks are the ones only YOU, the business owner, can do. They’re the ones where you’re working ON your business, not IN it. I know I emphasize that point a lot, but it’s because that’s how you scale things up. 

Say “see ya later” to the day-to-day busy-ness things you’ve been doing.

Those don’t help you build business better. They just keep you wrapped up and strapped down. Why not hire someone who’s better equipped and has the skill set for office work? They’ll probably be much better at it than you. And you’ll be much better at what you’re much better at. Get it? Good.

When you break out the calculator and run a few numbers, it’s amazing how much better you can feel. And that’s what happened with my client.

He did the math and saw how numbers don’t lie. They showed him how he basically couldn’t afford NOT to hire someone. And he told me it was the best thing he’s done.

That’s not only a mood changer, it’s a game changer.

Follow your passion, or…

That’s a phrase shared around the marketing world a lot these days. Follow your passion. I’ve heard and read many interesting opinions on it…two main ones in particular.

One side says you need to “follow your passion” and you’ll be able to create a business you love. The other side says you should focus on serving others, regardless of where your passion lies, and when you gain success, you’ll increase your passion. Is the first one right? Or the second?

Yes!

Passion for an idea or a way to serve others can fuel your desire to keep going even when things don’t take off right away. When you don’t have passion for something, it can sometimes feel like a chore more than anything. And you certainly don’t wanna drag your boots through the mud as you dread the day. That’s a recipe for a bad mood to say the least.

Follow your passion to serve others.

Keep in mind, as you find a way to serve others well, that can make you successful. And success fuels passion. I promise.

When you see how your skills and talents and ideas help others achieve their dreams, your passion will grow. As your passion grows, so will your business and your success. Before you know it, your passion will be following you. From project to project. And from where you are now to where you wanna be.

So, when you see or hear some saying you need to follow your passion, and some saying serve others first…

Choose both.

Better life

Tom wanted to help his neighbors be able to get more done in a day. And he knew he had a great way to do that, but he just couldn’t make his idea work. Day after day he worked on it, and night after night he lived with another failure. But he didn’t give up. Better life

A better life is so much more than a hashtag. Right?

And it’s not the exact same scenario for everyone. Vacation your way

Whether you prefer to hit the beach (warm weather is my preference) or hit the slopes (not so much for me), I’ll bet you love to get away from the routine. Right? But do you vacation your way? Or the way it’s set up for you?

The hurdle, for people with jobs, is waiting for that week or two weeks off to roll around each year. And in most businesses, when you want to take your vacation, you have to “put in for it”. Sure, lots of times you get what you want. But sometimes, somebody else already claimed those days. And they can’t let you take off or there’d be too many missing in that department. Or something like that. Has that ever happened to you?

Your business can be your art

Vincent van Gogh used paint and canvas to create beautiful and memorable masterpieces. But keep in mind, Vincent was also a deeply troubled soul. I’ll bet he had no idea there’d be movies and songs written about him long after he was gone. One thing was for sure, though. He pursued his art with a passion. Do you pursue your art that way?

Your tools might not be paint and canvas, but you can use your skills and talents to create something magical. Something rewarding. Not only for you, but for your family and friends and even people you might employ. 

Maybe you won’t ever see your best efforts hanging in a museum. Or hear your compositions played on the radio or internet. You might never take awe-inspiring photographs from deep under the sea or deep in space. But you don’t have to go to such extremes to create a masterpiece. Be honest with yourself

If you can be honest with yourself and admit you won’t follow through in business, then it’s OK to stop trying to be a business owner. Not everyone is cut out for it. Starting business ideas, only to abandon them could be a symptom you might not have the heart of an entrepreneur.

That’s OK.

Having a good job…and doing a good job IN your job…can be awesome.

It takes business owners AND employees to run a successful business. But it’s crucial to know which one you prefer and which one you’ll be. And then, be the best owner OR employee you can be. Either way you can be successful. I know you’ve heard this before, but you don’t have to take the same path to success as someone else. Your path might be something simple and uncluttered. And running a big company or corporation certainly won’t let you live that way.

So, be honest with yourself…

Are you the sort of person who wants to work toward your own goals and ideas? Can you put in the extra time each day…day after day…to make sure you reach those goals? Or would you prefer to work a good eight hour day and go home to your family? Like I said, the choice is yours, and either one is an honorable way to go.

Do you need a pivot episode?

Did you ever watch that little unknown 90’s show, “Friends”? Remember the pivot episode where Ross, Rachel, and Chandler are taking a sofa upstairs? Ross kept yelling, “Pivot, pivot, pivot!”

Finally Chandler yelled, “Shut up, shut up, shut up!”

Do you ever have a pivot episode?

I’m only sharing that because it’s getting close to the end of another work week. And some of you Type A’s might be thinking of working through the weekend. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, if you’ve got some momentum and things are going well, and you just plain love the work, go for it. But I like to encourage business owners and entrepreneurs to Pivot! once in a while.

Get out of your daily groove and get out and move.

Go see a movie. Or hike in the mountains…or wherever you like to hike if you don’t have mountains where you are. Get a change of scenery. Do some things in a different order. Or eat a different kind of lunch.

Point is…pivot from the routine once in a while so you can get refreshed and go back to work with a new perspective. Sometimes you don’t even realize you need to do it until you actually do it. Believe me, I understand what it’s like to get in the groove and not want to stop. Especially when you’re trying to build your business and get more out of life. But I still encourage you to write your own pivot episode. And when you do, let me know how it went. 

Maybe somebody needed to hear this.

Wimbledon is like your business

Wimbledon is in full swing right now. (pun intended) I’m not a big tennis fan, but I do like to “drop in” from time to time and watch. Mostly watching the audience. It’s funny to see all those heads going back and forth in sync. And, of course, seeing the tennis games and audience makes me think of a business analogy. (What are the odds?)

Do you ever feel like you and your business are being smacked, like a tennis ball, back and forth. Maybe it’s your schedule, or your to-do list, or your clients. Whatever it is, it doesn’t feel good does it? Wouldn’t you like to change that? If so, I feel your pain. Like they say, “been there, done that.” But after working with scores of clients and developing a way to help define, plan, and implement systems, I think I can help you overcome that out-of-control feeling.

Pretend you’re a star player at Wimbledon

You’re known for your powerful serve. You’ve practiced and played hard your whole life to be here in this moment. On this grassy stage, Wimbledon, famous around the world as one of the top tennis arenas. You loft your first ball into the air and lift the racket to swing into the serve. Now, stop action! Let’s zoom into that shot a lot more closely. Zoom in. A little more. That’s it. A cropped shot of just the ball and the racket.

Which one do you think is about to feel the impact more?

Yeah, that’s right. The ball is about to get smacked beyond its ability to stand still. So, it’ll fly through the air, over a net, bounce on the ground, and get smacked again by another racket. And that poor, little ball will have no say-so in where it goes or how long or where it’ll end up. Here’s where my business analogy comes in…

Don’t be that ball. Be the racket. Because the racket controls the impact, pace, and direction. Much better and all important to your business.

PTO – Paid time off

This might sound like crazy talk, but I’m actually grateful for no PTO…paid time off. At least in the way PTO works for most people and businesses anyway.

One huge reason I made the leap from working for someone else to building my own business was so I could be with my kids. I never want family to be an afterthought or come in second place to work or other parts of life.

Regular jobs never had enough paid time off.

When I “went out on my own”, my oldest child was 2 and my second daughter was only 3 months old. So, my number one reason for owning my own business was to have time with family. After almost 17 years as a business owner, that’s still my number one reason. Working in the corporate world never allowed enough paid time off to be with my kids when they need me most.

Take today for example…my daughter isn’t feeling well. And I’m able to be at home with her and take her to the doctor. I didn’t have to “call in sick” or ask permission to “take time off.” And I know the systems I’ve put in place will help keep my business operating while I take care of my family. Another benefit is my daughter doesn’t have to feel my stress. That pressure stress of getting back to work before I lose my job. She can rest easy knowing I’m able to be there as much as she needs me.

It’s a tremendous gift.

I remind myself, almost everyday, not to take it for granted. When I see or hear myself complaining about how the day is going, I just close my eyes and remember what it was like before. Oh yeah, that’s a gift. And if you’d like any help getting the same “gift”, I’m confident I can show you how.
