After being nominated and elected Commander-in-Chief for the War of Independence, George Washington made quite a speech. And it sure doesn’t sound like something influencers would say these days. Read what he said…

“I beg they will accept my cordial thanks for this distinguished testimony of their approbation. But lest some unlucky event should happen, unfavorable to my reputation, I beg it may be remembered by every gentleman in the room that I this day declare with the utmost sincerity I do not think myself equal to the command I am honored with. As to pay, Sir, I beg leave to assure the Congress that as no pecuniary consideration could have tempted me to accept this arduous employment at the expense of my domestic ease and happiness, I do not wish to make any profit from it. I will keep an exact account of my expenses. Those I doubt not they will discharge, and that is all I desire.”

So, Mr. Washington didn’t “wish to make any profit” from his new position. But he still promised to “keep an exact account of my expenses.”

I hope he kept his business receipts.

Because, apparently, those expenses included a lot of duties and details. General Washington had to select and supervise other generals, command an army, and coordinate with the new Congress. And he had to oversee the training of a unified militia and keep a check on supplies. And there are lots of logistics connected to all that.

I’m sure you can relate to having lots of business responsibilities. Right? And I know it can feel like you’re up against overwhelming odds a lot of the time.

But you’ve got it a lot better than George Washington had it. Because you can (virtually) be in more places at the same time. Poor George could only be in one place at a time. And you can practically run all your operations from your phone. “Your PHONE,” I said. And almost instantly.

You’re the relaxed type. Right? Nothing bothers you. And you certainly never let yourself get caught up in silly stuff like this whole Christmas rush thing. Right again? Yeah, I know you’re probably sitting in your favorite comfy chair, with your favorite comfy beverage, chuckling (to yourself of course) about all those crazies out there right now.

Those crazies who never seem to avoid the Christmas rush.

But I’m talking about all those gift shoppers. So, that doesn’t mean just because you’re not falling for all the shopping frenzy that you don’t need a little help with another kind of Christmas rush. And it’s your business advertising.

Because you ARE gonna advertise so you can ramp up your fourth quarter. Right?!

OK, with that in mind, I’ve got 10 steps to help ease “the pain” and make it pay for you.

First, start with your goal in mind. Like I always say: if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?

Second, figure out your budget. Because if you don’t know how much you can afford, you won’t know which platform or platforms to put your ads on. And you might run outta dough way too fast.

Third, do the best you can to know your demographics. Because if you don’t know who you’re talking to, how will you know what to say? Makes sense, right?

Fourth, be sure you know exactly what you’re gonna try to sell. And you’d be surprised at how many business owners are clueless about this. So, they end up tossing money out the advertising window, so to speak.

OK, fifth. Have you ever heard of a SWOT analysis? It stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. What do you do best? And where could you use a lot of improvement? Do you know about a market no one’s doing a good job of filling? That’s an opportunity. And try to figure out how competitors might beat you.

Sixth thing to consider is what sets you apart from the competition. And this is where your SWOT analysis can help you. Whatever makes you stand out is a potential winner in your advertising plan.

Alright, let’s keep going. Here’s number seven.

Figure out what your advertisements are gonna be. And then figure out where you’ll run them: online, signs, radio, tv, all of the above. And decide when. Because timing can change costs pretty dramatically.

For the eighth step, consider the good ol’ WOM advertising. Yeah, word-of-mouth is still one of, if not THE, best ways to get the word out about your deals. So, set up some ways to work your WOM.

The ninth step is something I talk a lot about in my trainings. The follow through. Because if you do all those other steps, but you don’t actually launch your ads, you got nuthin’. So, launch it!

And finally, step number ten. Analysis. Because if you don’t keep track of your results, you’ll just have to start all over, from scratch, the next time you wanna advertise. And that’s a HUGE waste of time. Because most of the work you do this time will help you go much faster next time.

OK, wow! That’s a lot. Well, it can be if you haven’t done it before. Or if you don’t have a team to do it for you. But whether you do it all yourself or you hire a team, you need a system to track it all.

Fixed Area Repeatable Marketing. Sounds like fun. Right? Yeah, no. That’s a very common term in the real estate industry. And “players” in that industry like to emphasize the acronym FARM. There’s no tractors involved. But they still have to know which seeds to plant.

Because every business has seeds to plant.

Sure, your seeds to plant might actually be plant seeds. Or they might be metaphorical seeds. But, regardless, you gotta get ’em in the ground, if you wanna grow what you wanna grow.

Maybe you’ve heard of target marketing or niche marketing. Those are just ways to say the more you know your market, the better you can talk to them. Not just in person but also in your advertising and marketing.

If you can’t understand your markets needs, wants, desires, and even their beliefs, you can’t help them. And you certainly can’t sell them anything. You’ll find this in just about every marketing circle, but only because it’s true. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. It doesn’t have to be all three at the same time. But it DOES have to start with at least one of those. And they’ll get to know, like, and trust you faster when they see you’ve spent time getting to know them and their problems.

One of the best business motivational lines out there goes something like this: The best way to solve most of your problems is to help others solve theirs. There’s an incredible amount of power in being that kind of person.

So who are you planting seeds for?

Do you have a clear picture in your mind of who your ideal customer or client is? If not, ask yourself these questions.

  • What level of education do they have:
  • How old are they?
  • Are they in a relationship or not?
  • What fears are holding them back from your product or service?
  • What preconceived notions might they have about you and what you have to offer?

Get to know your audience before you talk to them. And don’t be surprised when you get much better results.

Early this morning, I thought about this quote, from a friend of mine. “If you’re truly an optimist, and you see a glass with water at the halfway mark, your first thought is to be grateful to have the water. You won’t care whether the glass half empty or half full argument.”

What about you? Do you care whether it’s a glass half full or empty?

Yeah. I didn’t think so. Because my guess is you’ve been “at this” long enough to know how optimism AND pessimism can both work for you. It’s true. Right? And well-known companies use both all the time. For example, how many times have you heard commercials saying things like this?

“In economic hard times like these, when every penny counts, (fill in the blank) can save you time AND money.”

They point out the pessimistic reality. But they offer up a solution. Which is them of course. Here’s another example.

You read the latest news and see how crime is up. And it’s even in suburbs or so-called “safe neighborhoods” like yours. Because it’s everywhere. So, “suddenly” you see more ads and commercials that point out those stats. And then they share their latest advances in home security. Cybersecurity too.

Those companies know it pays to play to the pessimism and fears of the buying public. That might sound harsh, but it sure works.

And it’s not all bad news out there.

Some of the little, unknown businesses, like Apple and Amazon use optimism as a powerful advertising tool. You’ll see lots of bright colors and light and happy people in Apple’s ads. And Amazon even has a smile in their logo. They both even use light-hearted, ear-pleasing background music most of the time.

Optimism sells, too. Maybe you’ve used both strategies in your advertising and marketing.

But here’s something those companies do that you might not do. When they test their ads and commercials, they keep track. And I guarantee they use a system to keep track.

Yep, Apple and Amazon have millions and billions to spend on advertising and marketing. But they still use something similar to what you can get from me.

Wow. December 1st already. Yeah, you can look back through history books and see it. The way the weeks, months, years, decades, and centuries passed. It was always time after time. One day followed the one before. And so on. Maybe that’s why poets and songwriters have used that expression so often.

For example, Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.”

It won the Grammy for Song of the Year back in 1983. And people who were alive back then have told me it played all the time (pun slightly intended). Cyndi sang lyrics like:

I’ve got a suitcase of memories that I almost left behindTime after time.But you say to go slow but I fall behindTime after time.

No doubt it’s easy to get a little philosophical about how fast life passes by. But it’s definitely NOT a good idea to let it slip through your fingers. Because you could find yourself looking at it like an employee of one of my clients did. She said this, back during the height of the pandemic:

“Oh man. How am I supposed to keep up with all of it? As if I don’t already have enough on my plate. Now I gotta remember to bring my mask with me everywhere I go. It’s just so frustrating and time consuming to have to go back to my car and get it. Or worse, turn around and go all the way back home.”

If you’ve lived more than a couple of decades, I’m sure you can feel her pain. Right? Because that sort of thing has happened to just about all of us. And nothing like having to go all the way back home to make you appreciate wasted time. Nobody likes to backtrack.

But that’s life.

It doesn’t matter how well you plan out your day. The unexpected can and will pop up once in a while.

But successful people don’t let that happen over and over. Because successful people, the ones who start, build, and scale their businesses, make sure they have a system.

And backup plans.

They don’t allow time a consuming series of chaos followed by mayhem and followed by disaster.

I know setting up a system doesn’t sound sexy. I get it. And it sounds boring to say you gotta do the work. Because that doesn’t sound nearly as cool as “Do this today and start making money tomorrow.”

But guess what? Millionaires and billionaires almost never become that way “tomorrow.” Nope. They did the “boring stuff.” And they set up systems that helped ’em do what they do better and faster.

Money and success have to be earned. Sure, you could get lucky and be born into wealth. But did that happen for you? My guess is, if it had happened, you wouldn’t be reading this right now. Yeah, success takes hard work. But when the work is for your dream, or your own business, the hard work doesn’t drag you down. Because you’re not trading your time for somebody else’s dream.

But if you still work on someone else’s dream, maybe it’s time to get rebranded. And you can do that so much better and faster with a proven system.
