Follow one course until successful. Finding original, creative, unique solutions. Flexible optical control unit simulator. Do you see a pattern yet? I hope so. Because each of those phrases is a focus acronym. But acronyms are only helpful when you focus.

So, do you need a focus acronym in order to focus?

Did you know that when you’re interrupted or distracted, it takes about 5 to 7 minutes for you to recover? And that’s just to get back on track. Then, you still gotta get your head “back in the game” to start up your forward momentum again. So, that means you gotta figure out where you left off, where to jump back in, and how to re-start your productivity.

And those 5 to 7 minutes, multiple times a day, every day, week, month, and year, add up to a HUGE amount of wasted time.

And, even worse, that’s time you’ll never get back. When you think about it that way, I hope it makes you cringe. Because time is limited. And you don’t even know what that limit is.

Start with a sour-sweet, creamy layer of honey, and add some fruits and nuts. And what do you get? Yes, sweet and savory cakes that are among the most well-known desserts. Well, at least it’s well-known around this time of year. Figgy pudding. Just go shopping today (black Friday 2022) and you might hear it.

“Oh bring out the figgy pudding. Oh bring out the figgy pudding.”

From what I’ve heard (because I haven’t tried figgy pudding), it’s not all that delightful. Big surprise since it’s a dessert from England, a country world-renowned for its fine desserts. (eye roll)

“They” say, in more recent times, rum or some other other distilled alcohol is often added to pump up the fruitiness of the flavor. Ok, now we’re talkin’.

You might be asking what any of this pudding talk has to do with my normal business talk. Well, nothing exactly. But generally, it reminds me of the power of referrals. Yeah, when it comes to getting (and keeping) more clients and customers, there’s almost nothing better than referrals. And the proof is in the pudding (see what I did there?).

Like when a client told me he referred me to another business owner. Of course, that other business owner asked why my client referred me and not another coach. And his answer was because he had seen what my system did for his friend, yet another client of mine. Wow, that’s a referral within a referral within a referral.

And that all happened by using my System.

You gotta be true to yourself. Because that’s where the fork in the road to success is. Right there in YOU. And if you know you won’t follow through in business, then don’t try to be a business owner. It’s not for everybody.

So, start there.

Be true to yourself. And figure out who YOU are. Right now.

You might not have the heart of an entrepreneur or a business owner. And it’s better to know that BEFORE you try to be one of those. Because you can save yourself a lifetime of frustration and unhappiness.

If you’d prefer to work for someone else, support their vision, and do your best to help them, that’s OK. The world of business needs people like that. Lots of ’em.

And having a good job, where you can be the best YOU, can be awesome. There are plenty of examples that back me up on that.

It takes business owners AND employees to run a successful business. But it’s crucial to know which one you prefer. And which one you’ll be. And then, be the best owner OR employee you can be. Either way you can be successful. Because success shouldn’t be measured just by who gets credit for empire building.

I know you’ve heard this before, but you don’t have to take the same path to success as someone else. Your path might be something simple and uncluttered. And running a big company or corporation certainly won’t let you live that way.

So, be honest with yourself.

Are you the sort of person who wants to work toward your own goals and ideas? Will you put in the extra time each day, day after day, to make sure you reach those goals? Or would you prefer to work a good eight hour day and go home to your family? Like I said, the choice is yours, and either one is a respectable way to go.

If and when you go on enough job interviews, you’ll get that dreaded question. “Where do you see yourself five years from now?” And I believe that’s another reason to consider whether you prefer to be a job finder or a business builder. Because that question shows you that you’re not in charge.

A job finder is never truly in charge.

And that’s not wrong. It’s just true. When someone is in a position to offer you a job, that means they’re in the policy making position. You, as the job finder, are just in a position to respond. Sure, you can respond with an attitude of total control over who YOU are. But you don’t get to decide if you’ll get the job.

I think it’s important that I say, right now, that I totally understand if you need to get a job before you can start a business. Most people start that way. And it can be great. But if your ultimate goal is to be a business owner, then start building your business even while you’re still a job finder.

And you can start the process during the job interview when they ask you that question. Be prepared with an answer. And stay focused on your vision so you’re always prepared with the same answer? Don’t fumble around for a different answer each time.

You DO have a clear picture of where you wanna be in five years. Right?

You can see your vision as clear as crystal. Right? And you’ve written down at least a basic outline for how to get there. Right?

Right?!

No two ways about it. College is expensive. So, if you’ve got a young adult in your house (or you ARE one) who’s about to go enter the world of higher learning, you need a college budget. And when you start to set it up, don’t forget to allow for plenty of binge drinking.

Yeah, that’s gonna be a significant expense in your college budget.

Because college binge drinking is a “normal” thing for many college-bound young adults.

And for may of them it’s not just about having a few beers with their peeps. No, they gotta drink and drink until they can’t drink another drink. The call it “blackout.” And, at many of the college parties, if you don’t drink till you blackout, you just ain’t got no street cred.

Binge drinking till you blackout means, the next morning, you probably won’t even remember what happened last night. Oh sure, when you blackout, it’s dangerous. And it can do some serious long-term damage to your health. But who cares? Just the price you gotta pay, when you’re young and wild, to be cool. Or is it “sick?”

And it’s just part of life for a lot of college students.

So be sure to allow for it in your college budget.

Let’s not even talk about how all this binge drinking is a public health issue. And let’s not talk about all the free alcohol given away at college parties.

Who wants to be that kind of buzzkill anyway?

All I’m sayin’ is be sure you add the cost of alcohol (and it’s a lot) when you plan your college budget. I know you don’t want that to sneak up on you.

Of course, I’m using absurdity to illustrate absurdity. Because I think it’s important to know some of the risks of spending money on a college education. Especially since you have alternatives these days.

You could be the most talented singer ever. And you could be the most gifted artist the world might ever know. Or you could fix an engine, a faucet, or electrical outlet in your sleep. But talent is never enough. And when I say “never,” I’m not exaggerating.

A famous late night TV guy also believed talent is never enough.

Maybe you’re too young to know or remember Johnny Carson, the undisputed King of Late Night. But here’s what he said about it. “Talent alone won’t make you a success. Neither will being in the right place at the right time, unless you are ready.”

Hmm. He used the word, Ready.

Yeah, success doesn’t just happen. You gotta GET ready for it.

Check out what Mr. Carson did to get Ready. And he was what most would consider the most successful late night TV host ever. He was on 5 nights a week for over 30 years. And he became a household name. And you can’t do that much TV without getting and being READY.

Johnny would come out at the start of each of his shows and do a monologue. He could make it look so easy. His timing was great. His delivery was punchy. And he always looked prepared for anything. He was READY.

But you don’t get that way accidentally. It takes time and persistence. And you gotta be willing to make mistakes and keep moving forward. Johnny Carson had all that. And, over the course of his career, he built a better and better system to deliver a more focused entertaining program.

Fortunately you don’t have to stand in front of a studio audience. And you don’t have to perform with the knowledge that millions more people watch you on TV as you make your mistakes. But you DO have to be willing to make those mistakes and keep moving forward. With a plan. Because talent is never enough.

OK, I think I’ve made that point now.
