A couple of days ago I recalled a meeting I had with a financial planner client of mine. Of course, we talked quite a bit about money. But then he got a little more personal. In other words, he didn’t just talk about money in an abstract way. He told me about his simple, top 3 reasons for saving money.

And here’s why I said it’s a little more personal.

He didn’t describe the details of his life. But he DID have clear reasons to save money.

  • An emergency fund
  • For purchases
  • And as either a supplemental income or to give it away.

 

And he said he likes to keep it that simple for his customers, too. That way, they can be sure to focus on what’s important to them.

So, I thought about my own top 3 reasons for working hard and saving money:

  • My family.
  • Financial security.
  • And working on my own terms.

 

Your reasons might not be the same as mine or my client’s.

But you gotta know what they are. And never let them out of your head.

If you can’t say what they are, right off the top of your head, right now, stop reading this. And put everything else down, too. Turn off your phone ringer. Close the computer. And don’t do anything else until you write down your reasons and read ’em out loud to yourself.

I bet you already know what they are. But maybe frustration or the challenges of everyday life blur your vision. I’ve been there. We all have. But I encourage you to keep your eyes on the prize.

It’s hard work to own and run your own business. Heck, it’s even hard work to lay out a plan when you’re just starting out in the real world. But when you know why you wanna do it, and how much it means to you, the hard work will turn into the work you love.

An untrained, big dog on a leash is no fun. Because the constant tension on the leash can tire your arms out faster than you can say “roll over.” I know from experience. But compare that with well-behaved dogs, trained to be aware of where you are. They stay close by your side so well you hardly even feel the leash in your hand. And that makes the walk so much more enjoyable.

I found all that out with a wonderful client of mine who’s an exceptional dog trainer. And it made a huge difference in how much we enjoy our dog now.

And there’s something about having someone by your side. Right?

Someone who’s been there, done that. And I mean someone who’ll be right by your side to help you be the best YOU possible.

That can help ease the burdens of anxiety and tension and the fears of the unknown. If any of those words describe you, maybe you’ve moved away from your training. Or your skills. Maybe even your vision. It happens. OR. Maybe you haven’t even started your training or developed your skills.

Because constant tension can break down even the best of us.

So, using the dog analogy again, instead of dealing with the straining leash, take your dog to an obedience class. Or hire a professional trainer. You could even get a book, and learn how to train the dog yourself. Regardless of which way you use, the important thing is training. It benefits you because it gives your arm a break from the strain. And it benefits your dog because it finally knows what’s expected and doesn’t have to choke on a leash anymore.

Wanna cuddle up and watch a good video? Well, have you ever heard of, or watched a video about, the cuttlefish? They’re also called the “chameleon of the sea.” Because they can change their color and skin pattern to blend in with the background. It’s amazing to watch.

But you certainly wouldn’t wanna cuddle up with a cuttlefish.

They’re very efficient hunters. And they even have ways to sort of hypnotize their prey. I watched a video about how their skin works. And it’s really incredible to see. Scientists describe their skin as a bimolecular nanophotonic system. And it when you get a chance, check out a video or two.

So, scientists would like to reverse engineer their skin system. Because there could be some beneficial applications for that kind of adaptive camouflage. And as I thought about that, I remembered something I said about reverse engineering a couple of years ago.

How does reverse engineering work for your business?

Well, first, how do you track your performance? Do you have a system in place to track your different marketing units? And do you know what your three different business marketing units are? Because that data can give you laser like focus for next year.

Of course, it’s so important to understand how much effort and time it’ll take to reach your revenue goals. In other words, measure your conversion data. When you reverse engineer your conversion data, you can better project future revenue results.

Do you remember any of those old tootsie roll pop commercials. They’d ask how many licks it takes to get to the middle of the tootsie roll pop?

And, of course, those “licks” are a metaphor for your points of contact. How many of those does it take to get an appointment? And how many appointments to get a consultation meeting? Then, how many meetings to get the contract? And, finally how many contracts turn into closed business? See what I mean?

This is a large part of your role as the CEO and visionary of your business.

So, it’s pretty important to cuddle up to the idea of getting a system like that in place. Wouldn’t you say?

By now you’ve heard the “Twelve Days of Christmas” song at least once when you’ve gone just about anywhere. Of course. Because it’s on the radio, in the stores, and even playing on the streets. It’s a repetitious song. But it’s definitely part of our American Christmas heritage. So, it plays every year.

But those twelve days of Christmas would be an event planner’s nightmare.

At least if all twelve days of Christmas have to be represented. Because, think about it. The planner would have to find eight cows, seven swans, six geese, four calling birds (whatever those are), three French hens, two turtledoves, and a partridge.

But wait. We’re just gettin’ started.

Because the planner would also have to hire twelve drummers, eleven pipers, ten lords (Can you even hire lords?), nine ladies, and eight maids. PLUS, there’d have to be some sort of arrangement with a local jeweler for the loan of five golden rings. And then the planner would have to figure out how to keep all the animals fed and calm. And everyone would have to know their parts. And…well…

As I said, just an event planner’s nightmare. She (or he) would have to be able to shoot from the hip with amazing abilities. OR have a dependable System for finding and hiring all that talent. And that System would be great if it could help her (or him) automate a lot of the process. Because, think about it, the same party’s gonna happen somewhere again next year.

Maybe even next week.

And a really great system would help the planner delegate a lot of the repetitive work. Like feeding the animals, cleaning their pens and cages, and even cleaning up after them. Yuck.

Also, a great system would help the planner keep track of what worked and what didn’t. And where the best sources are for hiring talent and finding the animals. And that’s why it’s called a System. Because it’s a process of doing more of what works and less of what doesn’t.

Well, you might not have to worry about organizing a party for the twelve days of Christmas. But I know you need a System to help you do more of what works and less of what doesn’t. Maybe you already have that system. If so, great.

If you’ve followed my blog or emails for any length of time, you know I’m all about organization and planning. But even I don’t start working on a Christmas plan months in advance. That certainly doesn’t mean nobody should. Because for some people it’s something they look forward to all year.

So, some people start their Christmas plan in October.

Last week, I ran across a website from someone like that. And they literally laid out a Christmas plan based on 2 months in advance, 7 weeks in advance, 6 weeks in advance, etc. All the way down to the last days leading up to the big day.

And even though, as I said, I don’t go that far, I couldn’t help but admire their organized attention to details. Like in the last 3 weeks. They laid out a list that included…

  • Clean up your house
  • Send out Advent calendars
  • Put up decorations
  • Enjoy some Christmas activities
  • Plan the Christmas-day photo
  • Mail your Christmas cards

 

And they pointed out how cleaning way ahead of time prepares you to have a more organized Christmas week. When you send out the Advent calendars, it’s like starting the countdown. And who doesn’t enjoy a good countdown? Then, of course, there’s the whole thing about getting out the ornaments and making your home look Christmas-y. Yeah, even people who don’t live where it snows like a winter wonderland.

There were even some photo ideas. Have you ever tried these?

  • Matching pajamas
  • Ugly Christmas sweaters
  • Plain outfits, with Santa hats
  • Dress up your pets in something festive

 

Ok, I’m definitely not gonna start a new career as a professional Christmas planner. But it IS a great example of how having a plan can help you stay focused and get more done.

Maybe you’re not familiar with the Bee Gees, a music trio from Australia. If not, you probably don’t know about their younger brother, Andy Gibb. But he had a hit, back in 1978, called “Shadow Dancing.” The lyrics have nothing to do with business. Well, some monkey business maybe. But not actual business. But I heard a little bit of the song as I scanned my radio on the way to a client meeting. And it reminded me of something I shared a while back.

It was a frustration “shadow dancing” story from “Lorrie.”

And that’s not her actual name. But here’s what caused her frustration…

Lorrie suddenly quit her job. Because enough was enough. She’d given it “the ol’ college try.” But after multiple weeks of frustration at her new job, she threw in the towel. And it wasn’t because the job was too much for her. Her anxiety and frustration were due to the disorganized lack of training. The person assigned to train her used the old “shadow me” method of job training. And, as predictable as it almost always is, that went over like a lead balloon.

So, what’s wrong with that training method?

As a new worker, you need to be willing to be lead, because you need guidance. So, that’s not the problem. But most people (probably including YOU) wanna work with people, and follow people, who make them feel confident.

And how much confidence do you get by shadow dancing? How much does it actually help just to watch somebody else do the work all day? Especially when the person you follow spends most of the time “putting out fires” that come up in business. Right?

BUT…

Shadowing someone else to learn how to do a job is NOT the same as following in the footsteps of someone more successful. And it’s not same as following the steps of a proven System.

In business (and life), you’re the hiker.

And a System is the well-groomed trail. You can either take the trail and save time, OR you can try to hack your way through the forest or jungle. Sure, you can still get there. Eventually. But why take a lot more time when you don’t have to?

So, it can be a huge, unnecessary expense.

A friend of mine told me about one of his home improvements, a cabinet project. And the story reminded me of what a lot of people call a “vision board.” So I’ll share the story with you.

He made a vision board in his head.

He said he used to get his morning coffee, sit in his favorite leather chair, and read some news. But, every few minutes or so he’d look up at a very large empty wall on the other side of the living room. He and his wife hadn’t yet figured out what they wanted to do with the wall. They just knew they didn’t want to fill it up with a bunch of framed pictures. So, he started to envision some custom cabinetry he could build to cover the whole wall.

Fortunately, he has professional carpenter skills. And one of those mornings he stared at the wall and it hit him “like a ton of bricks!” He said he could SEE the entire finished project in his head. Didn’t even have to draw up any plans. He told me it was almost literally a high definition picture in his mind.

And, sure enough, after a couple of months of hard work, they had a finished cabinet. A place for their books, an enclosed media/TV center, and even built-in surround sound.

And he accomplished it all because he followed his plan.

And he had a plan because he started with his “vision board.”

Simple stuff works. It just does. Strike a match. Fire. Click a button. TV or radio comes on. Twist a key. Car starts. But when you think about what it took to make a match or TV remote or ignition system, it’s actually very complex stuff.

But that complex systems are how simple stuff works.

I just read an interesting couple of paragraphs off a website focused on selling grass fed beef. And I really enjoyed the creative approach to the science behind a cow’s digestive system. Here’s what it said…

“Inside the cow, a community of millions of microscopic creatures works tirelessly to digest fibrous grass. The cow chews once, swallows, and lets these microbes do their work, exuding precise concoctions of acids and enzymes to unlock the precious sugars stored in the grass. Then the cow regurgitates the microbe-worked grass as a wad of cud, chews it again, and swallows it yet again. All in all, it takes about 12 days for a blade of grass to pass through a cow to become either beef or manure.

This complexity continues outside the cow: with every pull of her prehensile tongue, the cow anoints the grass with special enzymes and hormones from her saliva. These chemicals then stimulate rapid regrowth in the grass.”

In case you haven’t heard, grass fed beef is supposed to contain more good-for-you nutrients than other meat. And when you see that complex system of digestion and how the cow and the grass are almost symbiotic, it makes sense.

You and I just see some cows eating in a field.

We might drive by and never give any of that a second thought. But there’s obviously a lot going on behind the scenes.

And that’s how the right System can work for YOU.
