Some of the things you take for granted, in this life, probably wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for a college dropout. And a lot of things surely wouldn’t be the same. Computers, software, travel, and entertainment have changed a lot because of some famous people who didn’t have degrees.

Check out these facts about the top 30 college dropouts, as of 2015:

  • Almost 2 million employees among them
  • Over $600 billion net worth
  • And more than $40 billion donated to charity

 

And another ironic fact is that each college dropout on the list has hired lots of employees with college educations.

So. What am I saying?

Well, drop out of college, of course!

No. I’m just kidding. Because I don’t know what your dreams and talents are. So, I have no idea if a college education is right or wrong for you. But I DO know it’s not for everybody. And it certainly isn’t a necessary ingredient for your success anymore.

Because the internet is (or at least, can be) the great equalizer.

You literally can educate yourself well enough to go for your dreams in ways a lot of history’s famous college dropouts could only imagine. You can pursue, and even monetize, your passion. Even if your passion is to sell tumbleweeds. Or talk about hair and makeup.

Yes. Hard-working entrepreneurs make money doing those things.

Of course, it’s risky to go all in on your dreams, your ideas, your passion. But nowadays YOU get to hold AND deal the cards. And that’s an advantage basically no one had back in the so-called “good ol’ days.”

These days, you don’t even have to own or lease a brick and mortar store. And you can pitch and sell your goods and services to a potential audience of millions. Not just foot and car traffic. Sure, there are no guarantees. But guess what?

There never were. And there never will be.

The sharp-dressed, young professional looking guy walked right up to the receptionist desk. And the lady behind the desk asked if he was there to “apply for the position.” But this guy wasn’t on a job search. He had an appointment with the business owner. To talk about, uh, business.

So, he grabbed some materials out of his leather briefcase and said, “I have an appointment with Jacob ____, the owner. Would you let him know I’m here with the documents he asked me to bring?”

That’s a great story. Right? And here’s the reason that young guy was there.

His job search days stopped at the door of his own office.

I love it when a young person knows what he or she wants. And when he or she isn’t gonna let anything stand in the way. Because it means there’ll be more focused entrepreneurs and business owners out there. And I think you can see how now, more than ever, owning a business is a great idea.

I’ve talked a lot about how job security doesn’t exist anymore for most workers. Whole industries change direction and even close. And especially with all the lockdowns, shutdowns, and mandates.

But maybe you still think a job beats the hassles of owning a business. No problem. I get it.

It’s a big deal to run a business. A lot of moving parts to manage. At least, it’s not if you wanna have a successful business. Because it’s not just about your dream or your big idea. You gotta put everything in place to give your dreams and ideas the best chance to succeed, too.

But there’s almost always a disconnect.

I read an interesting article about a woman, named Kimberly, who’s a mom of four. And she’s been a certified CPA for 25 years. But Kimberly decided she wanted more than just a CPA career. She looked up information about jobs from home. And she figured out how to mesh those two things together. So she moved her “job” into her home. And she built a side-hustle blog into a new full-time career.

Kimberly’s blog focuses on jobs from home.

Just saw that YouTube video of Judson Laipply doing what he called “The Evolution of Dance” again. And if you haven’t seen it, go look for it on YouTube. So funny. And there have been over 310 million views. Wow! It’s an old video where Judson dances to songs through the decades. And it’s really funny to watch because it shows how dance moves changed over the years.

But it also shows how distraction works. One minute you’re twisting the night away. And the next you’re moonwalking. Walking forward but going backward. And then you’re caught in a disco inferno. Yeah, it’s fun till the “next big thing” comes along.

Then you gotta learn a whole different set of dance moves.

Young adults, living with parents, is really a phenomenon. And I don’t mean that in the John-Travolta-phenomenon-movie-amazing-results-from-a-lightning-strike way either. Because I think it’s sad, tragic, and mostly unnecessary. Because there are so many better options.

Check out these census stats for young adults living with parents.

  • It’s now their most popular living arrangement.
  • The number is rising.
  • 24 million of those aged 18 to 34, lived under their parents’ roof in 2015.
  • More young adults lived with parents than with a spouse in 2016.
  • Almost 9 in 10 of the young people who lived with their parents a year ago are still living there.

 

But more disturbing than all those stats is this. 1 in 4 young adults, between 25 and 34, who still live in their parents’ home (about 2.2 million), don’t go to school or work.

That means, according to U.S. census reports, over two million young adults sponge off (yeah, I know it’s not politically correct) their parents. And I’d be surprised if you don’t agree with me that 25 years to 34 years isn’t all that young. Right?

A couple of years ago I shared an article about how real life comes after high school. And I said “real life means mom and dad don’t pay your rent, buy your food, or maintain your car.”

Apparently I was wrong about millions of those young adults whose parents DO pay those bills.

Yikes!

So, my solution isn’t for those lazier “young adults.”

I know how important it is for parents and teens to openly communicate about options and decisions for life after high school. And I also understand how important it is to be flexible, as a parent, about those options and decisions. Because we live in a time when young people have options that didn’t exist when we were in school.

And college is no longer required for most jobs and careers anymore. And I believe that’s a good Because college has become incredibly expensive. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you about the negative effects of costly college tuition. Especially with all the talk about forgiving college debts.

Plus, too many young people pursue degrees that won’t even pay for themselves in the real world. I just mentioned that in my last note to you.

Every year another batch of college students receive useless degrees in liberal arts. I’m not saying that to antagonize anyone who got one of those degrees. And I’ll explain why (or when) they’re useless in a minute.

Liberal arts is one of three useless degrees I’ll mention.

But, again, I’ll explain what I mean by useless in a minute. Because, believe me, I love the arts and artistic people. But liberal arts, film studies, and creative writing (including journalism) are not degrees I’d recommend to any person who’d like to make a living in the arts, film, and writing.

Because most people will do nothing with those degrees. And that’s because they’re almost guaranteed to come out of college with a degree and NO idea how to use what they learned to make money. You can’t simply be artistic and make money in the arts. You can’t simply study films and filmmaking and make money in movies. And you can’t simply be an awesome writer and make money writing.

“The real trouble with film school is that the people teaching are so far out of the industry that they don’t give the students an idea of what’s happening.” That’s a quote from Brian De Palma. He’s a well-known screenwriter and movie director. So, he probably knows a thing or two about the subject.

OK, enough of that. I think you get the point.

Most students, who major in those courses, turn their degrees into expensive, yet worthless, pieces of paper. Because they have no clear cut vision for what to do with them. Or they don’t have a plan, a System, to help them stay on track. So, they certainly don’t know how to take a creative endeavor and make money with it.

If you’re comfortable living in your parents’ house, or sleeping on a friend’s sleeper sofa, or staying some place somebody else is paying for, then skip my advice. Don’t read any further. Seriously, click out of this page now.

OK, answer me this. What do dog food, Mickey Mouse, and vision have in common? Well, way back in 1921 they all had a young entrepreneur in Kansas City, in common. He was a guy who saw his dreams crushed so much he had to survive on stuff your dog probably wouldn’t even like.

And that was just the beginning.

Because the dog food part wasn’t the end of his struggles.

Just when he got something going, something else or someone else would pull the rug out from under him. Then, he’d have to start all over. And that cycle continued into the 1930’s and even into the 1940’s.

But even when it seemed all hope was lost, he never gave up. He kept going back to the drawing board. Literally. Because he had a VISION. And, of course, I’m talking about Walt Disney. A guy whose dreams were crushed enough to make most people give up.

But Walt never lost sight of his vision. Even through the darkest days. He just worked on better ways to tell a story. And better ways to animate characters that could tell it.

I’m sure you’ve heard of some of his famous characters…

  • Mickey Mouse
  • Minnie Mouse
  • Pegleg Pete
  • Clarabelle Cow
  • Horace Horsecollar
  • Pluto
  • Goofy
  • Donald Duck
  • Daisy Duck
  • Huey, Dewey, and Louie
  • Chip n Dale
  • Humphrey the Bear
  • Ludwig von Drake, and of course
  • Scrooge McDuck

 

Right? Those are all famous characters audiences have enjoyed for decades. And they wouldn’t have existed at all if Walt Disney had ever given up after his dreams were crushed or his hopes were shattered.

But Mr. Disney had a strong and clear vision. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. And he never let the challenges break his focus or his spirit. Of course, he probably had his moments of doubt, when he was all alone in his room. Who wouldn’t?

But the point is, he never lost sight of his vision.

And that’s in spite of being told by MGM Studios that a mouse on a giant screen wouldn’t work because it would terrify women. And The Three Little Pigs wouldn’t work because there weren’t enough characters in the cartoon.

But I’m sure you know this, unless you’re from another planet. Mickey Mouse became one of the most famous cartoon characters of all time.

And those three little pigs were massively successful. In fact, they played in one theater so long that the owner put up a poster of them with long, white beards.

I’ve been sharing this with people through some ads recently. And I want you to know about it, too. Because I’ve seen a lot of parents relating to this serious flaw in our educational system. And I’m determined to help those parents (and their teens who are about to go out into the world) make real world connections with real world skills.

My kids were my motivation 20 years ago. And probably only parents with teenagers will understand. But by the end of this post, you’ll know exactly why ambitious teenagers all over the US are adopting these sensible life hacks. And FYI: they’re the same life hacks my 7 figure clients are using to run productive businesses and personal lives.

So, here’s the real world connections part…

If you’re anything like me, you want the BEST for your teenagers. Right? Like, time management, a controlled schedule, and more meaning. Literally, the works! 

Well, I did everything in my power to help my kids build their best life. And, all along the way I thought, “If only they could see the bigger picture of how their choices TODAY could affect them tomorrow.”

So, that’s why I worked hard on a system. One that would afford me the advantage of taking care of them AND work from home. Because I just couldn’t bear the thought of getting so tangled up in the corporate world that I’d miss seeing them grow up.

But I knew it would take a good system. And those other things you always hear about, too. 

Dedication. Persistence, Focus

Fortunately, I developed that system while I was still in the corporate world. And once I “perfected” it, I was able to take it to other business owners and entrepreneurs and help them reach their dreams and goals.

It’s so great how you can reach your own dreams and goals by helping others reach theirs. And that’s how I reached was able to start working from home where I could be with my kids. 

Now, fast forward…

Over the years, I’ve been able to help lots of clients (and me) build 6 and 7 figures businesses.

OK, I believe you’re probably like me. You don’t want your kids to drown. So you  get ’em swimming lessons. Right? And you don’t want ’em to crash the family car. Or worse…end up a highway statistic. So, you make sure they get driver’s education with at least 50 hours behind the wheel. 

And you probably care more about their teeth and hygiene than they do…a  least while they’re young. So, you teach them how to brush, wash, and clean up their rooms and make their beds. 

Sure, it’s a lot of work. But the payoff is, they learn how to be successful adults. And successful adults don’t tend to move back into their parents house when the going gets bumpy. Especially when they get real world skills to help them go for their dreams with confidence.

But unfortunately you’ll have a difficult (if not impossible) time finding those skills in traditional education. And I probably don’t have to show you stats of defaulted loans for college degrees that offer no real world skills. That’s in the news everywhere all day and night.

But fortunately, those exorbitant college prices aren’t necessary these days. And I’ve got a solution for a tiny fraction of the cost.

It’s based on what I call System Think.
