Who hasn’t, at some point, wished they could turn back the clock? Maybe you’re wishing that right now. Hey, I’ve been there. Maybe, in some ways, I’m always there. But the reality is, there’s really only point in your life where you can make a difference. Now. So, your time to shine is…say it with me…NOW.

Sure, it would be great to jump into your time machine and go back in time. Well, maybe it’d be great. Because maybe you could map out all those bumps in the road of life. And think about how much nicer your life would be now.

Or would it? Because, just like in the time travel movies, you might change your future to something even worse. So, what do you say we just forget about that clocking turning stuff? And embrace the facts.

Your time to shine is NOW.

And time travel just means you’d just be trying to “fix” the future. Instead of setting it up for yourself. And you’d sacrifice the journey forward. I mean think about it. When you rent a car to go on vacation, do you decide to stay home if you see there’s construction on some of the highways? No, you just get going. And deal with stuff.

So, sometimes there’s gonna be detours along the way. What do you do then? Go home?

No way! You’re on vacation. So you’re gonna have fun no matter what. One way or another. Right?

Well, I’m being a little silly. Because I want you to get the point. Life is full of unexpected surprises and consequences. So, you gotta be able to navigate better and think clearly under pressure. Think systematically. It’s the age-old formula: IF…THEN.

If the road is closed, then take another. And if the weather might change, then pack more clothes. Or if the dates get changed, then make sure your deposits are refundable.

It’s the closest thing to time travel.

And like the old saying goes, “the only thing constant is change.” So, it’s a matter of “when.” Not “if.” So, if your future serves up lemons, are you gonna be ready to make some lemonade?

Wow. That’s a pretty wide variety of potential parties. I bet you already have one foot out the door on your way to pick up some daffodils, Charmin, kibbles, and popsicles.

But before you head out, I’d like to remind you that each one of those so-called “holidays” that somebody (or a group) came up with is a potential communication opportunity for you. And those “official” holidays don’t even include your own list of anniversaries, birthdays, etc.

Yeah, even if every day isn’t a holiday, it’s still a special day.

For somebody. Somewhere.

And when you’re the person who seems to never forget, what do you think they’re gonna think about you when you send a note that day? Yeah, they’re gonna think you’re special. And they’re gonna remember YOU when it’s time to remember someone who does what you do.

You might not realize this, but today is National Kiss and Make Up Day. Yeah, I don’t know who comes up with this stuff. And at first glance, it sounds pretty goofy. Or corny. But think about it a little bit, and maybe it’s not such a bad idea.

How did Kiss and Make Up Day become a thing?

Well, according to some sources, the origin is anonymous. But others credit Ms Jacqueline V. Milgate, from Hilton, New York, with the idea. Either way, it’s based on the old English idiom that means forgive and forget. So, the “holiday” was established to help people forget those arguments, forgive the other person, and become friends again

Sounds reasonable to me. How about you?

And, of course, I tend to think about the connection to business. At least I do here in my role as an online business coach. So, do you have any business relationships on the rocks? Any unresolved issues with clients, customers, or business partners?

If so, why not take the lead from National Kiss and Make Up Day and figure out a way you can all forgive and forget. Here’s a suggestion.

Just open up your CRM System and set up a reminder to send out ice-breaking emails to those people you’d like to build relationships with again. Then, set up some action steps based on their responses. And then be prepared with follow up.

Does any of this sound like you? “Seems like I just get started and the day’s over.” Or how about, “There just aren’t enough hours in the day.” And maybe you’ve even said, “I hate deadlines. Because my time is up way before I finish.” Don’t feel bad if you can relate.

I know the sense of dread in that “time is up” feeling. I have kids.

If you’re wearing a watch, look at it right now. If you’re not, just look at any clock that’s handy.

OK, are you looking at it? Good. Now, what do you see? I predict your watches, clocks, and digital timekeepers show some form of 12 numbers. Pretty incredible, right? Well, I’m not done. Now, start at the top of the clock and follow the numbers clockwise (pun only slightly intended). And I predict the numbers go from 12 to 1 and all the way back to 12. Yes?

Wow! How’s that for magic? Without even seeing your clock I could tell you what’s on it. Is that amazing or what?

Naturally, I’m just being silly to illustrate the silliness of time management issues. Because your watch or clock is NOT unique. You and I (and everybody else) deal with the same numbers on the clock. And you and I (and everybody else) have the same hours every day.

So, I suggest you don’t have a time management problem.

Because time can’t actually be managed anyway. It’s gonna pass whether any of us like it or not. Right?

But what I suggest is that you have a control issue. A schedule control issue to be more exact. And it’s difficult, if not impossible, to fix that issue if you don’t build or get a system for control.

If I say perfection is___, fill in the blank. What’s your description or definition. According to many, it’s the enemy of progress. Or the enemy of good.

And a lot of people will tell you perfection is a myth.

Remember this? The Queen asked, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” And, “Thou, O Queen, art the fairest in the land,” said the mirror.

But, remember this? One day the mirror told the queen, “Snow White, O Queen, is the fairest of them all.”

Ouch. Just like you’ve probably heard it said, “The mirror doesn’t lie.”

So, don’t let yours either.

When you get up tomorrow morning, go to the mirror and say this. “On my honor, I will have a successful business today.” It’s a simple, one step plan for success (or however many steps there are to get to your mirror). Then, you can be sure your business will grow and thrive from that point on.

Uh-oh, are you still with me? Or has the skeptic in you just woke up?

Well, I hope it’s the skeptic.

Because talking to yourself in the mirror isn’t a magic pill for success.

Especially if and when you lie. Oops, is that too blunt? Would you prefer me to say “especially if and when you don’t share only wonderful words with yourself?” The point is the same.

Tell yourself the truth.

Stay true to your vision. And your vows. All those times you told yourself, “I’m never gonna give up.” Or, “I’m gonna do at least one thing for my business, every day, so I can be successful faster.”

Yeah, now we’re talkin’.

I hope you did say those kinds of things to yourself when you started. And I hope you still do. But you might’ve noticed, after working your business for a while, that determination, alone, didn’t increase your bank deposits all that much. And maybe you even wonder what’s missing to help you get more clients or customers or patients or sales or whatever.

If those shaky thoughts have creeped into your head, don’t start to lie to yourself in the mirror. It’s OK to admit some doubt. And it’s OK to not know all the answers all the time. But…

It’s not OK to lie to yourself.

And if you’ve told yourself you can build a successful business all by yourself, you lied.

Because nobody can do that.

But you CAN build a business where you don’t have to work for someone else and you don’t have to hire employees. And it CAN feel like you’re doing it all by yourself. But it takes a System.

Unfortunately, most business owners don’t (or won’t) commit to a system. Most would rather OPEN a  business than RUN one. Because opening is easy (so is going out of business). But running a business takes a System. At least if you want a business that can eventually run even without you.

I’ve mentioned, before, how it’s kind of like the difference between Tommy’s Taco Shop and Taco Bell. One makes tacos for a while. The other makes money for decades.

Which do you prefer? If it’s the make-money-for-decades model, then get in front of the mirror tomorrow morning and say, “On my honor, I will do my best for my business, my family, and my future.”

I probably don’t need to tell you this (at least I hope I don’t need to tell you) that you can make a mistake, in your business and your life, and it’s not the end of the world. You already know that. Right?

But you CAN make a mistake and bankrupt your business.

It depends on what that mistake is. There’s one business mistake that can cost you clients, money, and time. Actually, I’m sure there’s more than one. But I’m only talking about this one for now.

And you might be doing it right now without even realizing it. And if you are, shut up.

How rude of me, right?

Sorry, not sorry. Because I want you to get the point. And the point is, you might be talking your way into less business. And even business bankruptcy.

Let’s say you have a variety of appointments. A nice pipeline of potential customers to contact and connect with. OK? And maybe those appointments include networking, initial consultations, actual on-the-job meetings, scheduling vendors, and on and on.

Any of those sound familiar?

Well, here’s where it gets down to the nitty gritty. If you just make and take calls, without a system, you’re probably not gonna end up in control of your schedule. And believe me, schedule control keeps you in the driver’s seat. Or your CEO seat.

So, that’s why I said “shut up” earlier.
