Let’s take a little walk back in time. Way way back. Past the twentieth century. And let’s keep moving back through the centuries till we get to ancient Greece and Rome. All the way back to around 200 BC. Because that’s where you can first see articulated “dolls.” Boys and collectors call the modern day versions action figures. But the idea is they’re toys that are designed to move like humans.

The toy company, Hasbro, is credited with coming up with the term “action figure” in 1964. And they did that to market their G.I. Joe figure to boys who didn’t want to play with “dolls.” And it worked like a charm. In fact, action figures have become so popular that adults collect them. Sometimes with a passion.

As a result, action figures keep moving off store shelves in a big way.

But I don’t share this action figure history because I’ve become a collector. Hardly. It’s the keep moving part I’m interested in. I thought about it again when I re-read a message from one of my clients, Jennifer.

She said this about my RondaReady System, “The time organization has given me an outline of what my day should be like. Not only day-to-day, but the next day, the next week, the next two weeks, and for months. It’s given me the structure I need to keep moving forward and know what I need to be doing every day.”

And Jennifer also said this about the System Thinking part…

“I held myself accountable. Because it was set in front of me. And I knew what I needed to do. Before, I didn’t have that. And things like that would have been extremely helpful my whole life. It would’ve been great to know starting way back…in school.”

Then Jennifer mentioned study habits and how System Thinking would be great for school kids. She shared her own study habits as she grew up.

“I taught myself to cram before a test.”

“And that was basically staying up all night. I DID do OK. But that’s not a good study habit to have. I’ve seen my oldest kids struggle with study habits. So, I think you gotta have a personalized study plan or a life skills study plan. And I don’t think she’s (oldest daughter) learning that at all. Yes, I think that stuff’s important. And no, I don’t think they’re (kids) getting that anywhere, except for home life.”

Of course, that made me wonder if Jennifer thought my RondaReady YOUniversity could help kids who are about to go out into the world.

“Yeah, definitely,” she said.

“I feel like it would be a benefit. And I feel like it would be a benefit to start earlier. Maybe even middle school. I mean, that’s when kids start to grow into who they actually are. But definitely high school and college…yes.”

So, there you have it. A working mom who’d like to see her kids get a better start in life than she had.

I love raspberry desserts. If I see a dessert with raspberry in the name, I’m probably gonna love it. And that’s all there is to it. Except, for whatever reason I can’t fathom, some people don’t like raspberry desserts. Are they crazy? Absolutely maybe. Because they love what they love. And, as much as it doesn’t make sense to me, not everybody has the same good taste in desserts as me.

OK, I’m kidding of course (sort of). Because everybody’s not the same as me. So, just because something works for me doesn’t mean it’s gonna work for somebody else. I mean, we’re all similar on one level or another. But, c’mon. Who’d want us all to be exactly alike? Right?

And that’s kind of a silly analogy for what I talk about a lot in my RondaReady coaching. Only, in the coaching, it’s talk about business. And life. Not desserts.

And if you’re interested in being a business owner in your life, then you gotta go to college. Right?

Well, absolutely maybe.

And maybe not.

It depends on what data you look at. But a lot of data shows that as much as 43% of college grads are underemployed in their first jobs out of school. Or, worse, they get a degree and still don’t know what they want to do.

And a lot of the time their degree doesn’t provide actual real life skills. So, it’s no wonder a lot of younger people wonder, “Is college even necessary?”

More and more, the answer to that question is, “No!”

Of course, some jobs and careers require extended schooling. Like doctors and lawyers for example. And there are still plenty of college graduates who find their dream job after graduation.

I probably don’t have to tell you this. But I will. Technology changes fast. So skills you learn this year might not get you a decent job four years from now. And if you invest four years (and a ton of money) on a degree with no real-life-real-world value, it could be  a heavy weight on your shoulders for years.

So, don’t wonder about college. Figure out if it’s for YOU.

If you live in Florida right now, you might understand this better than the rest of us. And if you don’t, imagine living somewhere nice one day and the next day it’s underwater. The disaster of Hurricane Ian provides tons and tons of opportunities. Not the least of which would be a positive customer experience that cleanup and construction crews could offer.

And don’t be fooled. Providing positive customers experiences is a choice.

There’s an old marketing saying that goes, “Customers don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

And those people, in Florida, who are suffering through devastation and loss right now, will certainly appreciate it if helpers can show they care. You remember The Ventures? Right? What, no? Seriously? The band that gave us huge hits like “Wipe Out,” “Walk Don’t Run,” and “Pipeline.” Yeah, them.

OK, this isn’t about them. But I heard they were a popular surfing band from way back in the day. And then I watched a weather report that talked about Florida and the hurricane, and well…I just put them together.

So, enough of the zany talk. Let’s get down to business.

I just read an article that mentioned how gas prices, in Florida, have dropped by about 4 cents a gallon in the past several days. And that’s in spite of the fact that Hurricane Ian looks like it’s heading toward the Sunshine State in the next few days. AAA said gas stations could temporarily run out of fuel. Because people, who want to evacuate, will fill up or top off their tanks and spare gas cans.

Yeah, without a pipeline, you eventually run out of fuel.

That’s just how it works. Here’s a quote, from that article, that I found very interesting:

“Gas stations are not connected to an underground pipeline. Just like your vehicle, each gas station can only hold so much fuel at a given time. That fuel is stored in tanks underground. Once those tanks are empty, retailers bag the pumps and wait for the next delivery truck. Sometimes that can be the same day, sometimes longer. It can vary.”

Now, for my purposes, as an online business coach, those gas stations represent my clients and students. And I tell them how important it is to maintain a steady flowing pipeline of their customers and clients. Because the work they currently have will eventually run out. And without more fuel (customers and clients to serve), business dries up. Meaning, no sales and profits until there’s more in the pipeline.

I don’t have to deal with hurricane issues here in Colorado. And many of my clients and students don’t either. But business owners and entrepreneurs who live on, or near, the coast sure do. The distraction of torrential rains and devastating winds is no small thing. To say the least.

And that’s only part of the picture.

Meteorologists warn that damage is possible to mobile homes, trees, and crops. Then, there could be destructive wind gusts and storm surges. And we can’t forget about power outages. Imagine if your business is mostly online and you can’t GET online. Yeah, your business could run out of fuel fast.

But, I don’t wanna sound like a doom and gloom Debbie Downer. And maybe Hurricane Ian won’t do terrible things to the Gulf Coast. I hope not.

The point I want to emphasize is the pipeline connection. And it’s what I’m talking about in next month’s UNversity lesson. Your pipeline. UNversity classes, in case you don’t already know, happen on the first Thursday of every month. And for October 2022, that’s the 6th. Ten days from now, as I share this.

OK, there’s probably very little chance you’ll ever see a cow on the roof of a cotton house. But if you ever do, don’t worry. Because that’s just a sign your reward is vouchsafed. Confused? Yeah, I’d better clear this up a little.

“Your reward is vouchsafed” means it’s a given.

Here’s how one dictionary defines it:

  • verb [with two objects]
  • give or grant (something) to (someone) in a gracious or condescending manner: it is a blessing vouchsafed him by heaven.
  • [with object] reveal or disclose (information): you’d never vouchsafed that interesting tidbit before.

 

And that’s how it is with obstacles in life and business. You’re gonna have ’em. There’s nothing you can do to live an obstacle-free life. Or have an obstacle-free business. But you can reach your reward (aka: goals) when you don’t let those obstacles knock you off course.

Did you ever see the movie, O Brother Where Art Thou? There’s a part, in that movie, where the main characters, 3 escaped convicts, meet up with a “blind seer” riding a pump-action handcar on a railroad track. They jump on, and ask the seer a couple of questions. And he tells them…

“You seek a great fortune, you three who are now in chains. You will find a fortune, though it will not be the one you seek. But first. First you must travel a long and difficult road. A road fraught with peril. Mm-hmm. You shall see thangs, wonderful to tell. You shall see a…a cow…on the roof of a cotton house, ha. And, oh, so many startlements. I cannot tell you how long this road shall be. But fear not the obstacles in your path. For fate has vouchsafed your reward. Though the road may wind, yea, your hearts grow weary, still shall ye follow them, even unto your salvation.”

See what I mean? Even a blind seer knows that obstacles are inevitable.

But inevitable doesn’t equal impossible.

Obstacles might even help you become a better decision maker. And better decisions are a direct result of focus. A laser-like focus on your vision. If you can’t see “IT,” how can you ever make “IT” happen?

Yesterday I talked about an apple a day and shared some thoughts about the idea behind it. Today I’m talkin’ about a quarter a day. And I mean an actual 25 cents. One fourth of a dollar. Because it’s a big deal. In fact, it’s a day’s wages. What’s that? You don’t believe me?

Well, Aaron lived on a quarter a day.

And it wasn’t just because he dropped out of school when he was only 14. He also had to work to help support his parents and siblings. His first job, in a factory, paid a whopping 25 cents a day. But, as awesome as that sounds, he made even more in his next job as a brick stacker at a kiln. 30 cents a day.

I know what you’re probably thinking. This must have been a long time ago. OK, you’re definitely right. And a quarter was worth roughly about 3700% more back then. But that would still be about $9.49 in today’s money.

So, imagine a first job at even ten times that much per day. About $90.50 per day. It still wouldn’t be a job you could get rich on. In fact, you’d only see about $1350 a month, after taxes. And I don’t know if you’ve seen the cost of housing lately, but that would maybe cover a two bedroom, one bath apartment. Yikes.

But let’s get back to Aaron.

After a while he found a job as a manager of a dry goods store. And they gave him the responsibility of getting more customers in rural areas. Fortunately, he was pretty good at it.

Coincidentally, subsequent employers kept sending him out into the rural areas, too.

But Aaron made good use of his time out there. He talked with the locals and listened to their biggest complaint. High prices from those companies that sent him out to the sticks.

So, Aaron devised a system to cut out the “middle men” and lower prices for those nice people. But apparently friends and relatives thought he was crazy. So, he bought some “goods” and pursued his vision.

And then, a little something known as The Great Fire of Chicago, happened. Poor Aaron’s investment was burned up. Just like so many others.

Most people would have given up right there and then.

But Aaron put together $1600 (with the help of a couple of partners) and re-established his new mail-order business. And he had a snazzy catalogue printed up and distributed. Especially to those rural areas. His partners left, after a year. But his brother-in-law wanted in, and he had another $500 to invest. So, he became a partner.

That might have been the best move by a brother-in-law, ever.

Because their company eventually became one of the most successful businesses ever. And at the time of his death, Aaron’s company had sales around $40 million. But that was 1913. So, in today’s dollars, he would have been worth over a billion. Not bad for a guy who started at a quarter a day.

Oh, I left out one small detail. His full name was Aaron Montgomery Ward. Yeah. THAT Montgomery Ward. Sadly, the company went out of business in 2001. But they DO have an online only version now.

I know you’ve heard that old expression, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Don’t worry. I’m not gonna hit you with some nutrition news. But I AM gonna talk about that little known computer company who calls themselves Apple.

If they had their way, you’d certainly buy an Apple a day from them.

And they had their September iPhone 14 release event earlier this month. Some of the iPhone 14 models look pretty impressive. And others look similar to earlier models. But they still show how Apple designers and builders spend a lot of time making precision tools.

And they also still spend a lot of time making them look cool. Cool has very little to do with how dependably functional your device is. But it doesn’t hurt to have a device that looks cool, too. Right?

I don’t use Apple computers. But I DO have an iPhone. It’s what I record all my RondaReady videos on, and it does an awesome job. Even though it’s not the latest greatest.

And it’s so easy to use. But that’s because Apple has spent years doing all the hard stuff first. I mean, check out these specs for their 14 Pro Max:

  • A16 Bionic chip
  • 6‑core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores
  • 5‑core GPU
  • 16‑core Neural Engine

I can almost hear the oohs and aahs. Yeah, who wouldn’t want bionic chips? And a 6-core thingamajig. And let’s not forget that “neural engine.” Neural? Wow. Last time I checked that had something to do with the nervous system. And now you can get a phone with that in there? Incredible.

But seriously (mostly), think about everything that goes into making just one iPhone. Well, actually you probably can’t think about everything. Because there are so many things you probably don’t know what all goes into one. But think about the idea of all that technology and design and ingenuity. Packed into a device you can fit into your pocket.

That took a PLAN.

A focused and methodical plan. There must have been tons of meetings to discuss features and benefits. And there must have been plenty of back-to-the-drawing-board moments. Then, somebody (or a lot of somebodies) had to synchronize parts, manufacturing, marketing, and more.

But Apple makes all that look easy. Because they have a well-oiled system.

It’s a primo example of what I call System Thinking.

Nikolai Tesla knew precisely what he wanted to achieve. And he knew why it was important to him. He knew how to set goals for himself. And he took the necessary steps to achieve them. With commitment to his vision. From what I’ve read about him, his ability to stay focused was second to none. His success systems were a byproduct of his ability to stick to his vision.

Here’s a quote from him where he talked about sending communication signals around the world without wires. It’s a great example of how your “vision” sees the possibilities…

“… I would say a few words on a subject which constantly fills my thoughts and which concerns the welfare of all. I mean the transmission of intelligible signals or perhaps even power to any distance without the use of wires. And we need not be frightened by the idea of distance. To the weary wanderer counting the mileposts, the Earth may appear very large. But to the happiest of all men, the astronomer, who gazes at the heavens, and by their standard judges the magnitude of our globe, it appears very small. And so I think it must seem to the electrician, it certainly is possible, to produce some electrical disturbance sufficiently powerful to be perceptible by suitable instruments at any point of the Earth’s surface.”

And THAT’S how success systems, like smartphones, are created.

  • With vision.
  • A commitment to the process.
  • A focus on the idea of serving others well.

 

Because, think about it. Everything starts as an idea. And that’s why great idea people, like Nikola Tesla, spend a lot of time thinking. Because idea people know thoughts precede action. And they help you get a clear vision. And if you can “see it,” there’s a better chance you’ll take action and DO IT.

You’ll spend more time with YOU than any other person in the world. No gettin’ around it. And since you spend every waking, sleeping, walking, talking moment with yourself, avoid stinkin’ thinkin’ at all costs.

You know what I’m talking about. All that negative self-talk. Those things you tell yourself which your self shouldn’t oughta hear. Like “My ideas aren’t good enough.” Or how about, “I’ll never be a Tesla.” And maybe you’ve even wondered, “How am I supposed to compete with the rich and famous?”

Ooh, yuck. What a Negative Ned.

Here’s my recommendation. Tell yourself you CAN reach your goals? See yourself successful. Get that clear vision of yourself in your mind. That’s where success systems start.

In your mind.

Most likely, the only difference between YOU and the most successful people is in your mind. Because successful people don’t build a special room in their minds for that evil Mister Self-Doubt.

So, success systems start with success thinking.

But where do you learn how to do that? Because most parents don’t pass Success Thinking on to their kids because it wasn’t passed on to them. And you won’t find a university that includes a How To Think course. No, for that you need the RondaReady YOUniversity.

In some ways, it’s like Mickey Mouse or the Empire State Building. And, according to some reviews, it embodies the optimism of American style. It’s been seen on celebrities for decades. And it’s been described as “…honest and from the heart…for…everyday people who make it their canvas for self-expression…”

If you’ve been around for any length of time during the last 50 years, you’ve probably seen it. Because it’s been to the Olympics, the U.S. Open Tennis tournament, Wimbledon, and lots of other famous events.

From classic white to classic red, white, and blue American style.

And no one would have guessed, back in 1939, when little Ralphie Lifshitz was born, that he’d be the guy who’d make all that happen.

Because he was the son of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants. He went to school at the Manhattan Talmudical Academy, which is a Jewish school keenly focused on the Torah. And then he graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1957. After that, he studied business at Baruch College, at the City University of New York. But he dropped out after two years.

From 1962 to 1964, Ralph served in the United States Army. And he followed that up with a brief stint as a sales assistant for Brooks Brothers. Then he became a tie salesman for Beau Brummell. And at the ripe old age of 28, Ralph talked the company’s president into letting him start his own line.

He “learned the ropes” and came up with a strategy to move up in the world. That was in 1967. And by 1968, he launched his, now famous, line of menswear known as “Polo.” I’m sure you’ve heard of that brand. And I’m sure you figured out I’m talking about the Polo Shirt by Ralph Lauren.

Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand made him a billionaire.

And since you know a little more of the rest of the story, maybe you can see how important it is to have a vision. Ralph Lauren developed a vision for what he wanted to be and do. At a fairly early age he stayed focused on his dreams and goals. And he created his own roadmap. His own American style. Like anyone, he had help along the way. But unlike most, he didn’t let distractions throw him off course.

But to be able to do that, you gotta figure out who you are and what you wanna do in life. The best time to start is right now. Unless you can start 20 years ago.

Good news is, you don’t have to start from scratch like Ralph.
