I know you’ve heard the expression “they” use now. The two word expression that basically means you take responsibility for something. And you take control. And that expression is “Own it.” But, to me, there’s no better time or place to use that expression than when it comes to owning a business. I mean, literally…own it.

Because owning a business shouldn’t be a 24/7 proposition.

And, by that, I mean, when you truly own it, your business won’t run you ragged every waking (and sleeping) hour. What kind of dream would that be? And that’s how you started, right? With a dream?

But then, maybe you were like Bob (not his real name) who built a great business and made his dream come true. Then, trouble reared its ugly head. Because Bob had built a business that required (you could almost say “demanded”) him to be involved in every part of it.

So, Bob said he never even had “time for a fun game of golf” anymore. His business owned him. And I only changed the name. The story is true. Sadly, too true for way too many dream chasers and risk takers.

And there are a couple of simple (even if they’re not easy) tools you can use to avoid Bob’s burdens. Tools that’ll make sure your business won’t crumble without you involved in every detail.

Of course, if you prefer a giant weight around your neck, or stress-filled days, then you absolutely don’t need these tools. And if you’re not happy unless your days are consumed with busy-ness and worry, then, you certainly don’t need my help. Or anybody else’s.

And I can yell, all day, how that’s a recipe for disaster. But you’ll be too busy to even hear me.

So, in that case, forget about golf or family time or travel.

Just get up every morning, hit the ground running, and don’t stop till you drop back into bed every night.

It sounds awful to me. But hey…I’m not you. Maybe that sounds like an awesome life. If so, more power to you. As for me, I enjoy my occasional trips to exotic beaches. And I love being able to spend time with my kids, especially now that they’re older and I don’t know how many more times we’ll all be together in the same place.

But, like I said, that’s me. I certainly don’t wanna project my preferences over on you. But if some time away from your business, without the worry of it falling apart while you’re gone sounds good, then you should get the RondaReady System. It’s pricey for people who don’t use it. A couple of years ago I mentioned a “Frazier” episode where he was super focused on his IQ score. And it was a point of competition between him and his brother, Niles. It was so funny (and, in a way, sad) how much importance they placed on scores their mom (who had long since passed away) had possibly given them. If you’re a fan of the Frazier show, you’ll probably know which episode I’m talking about.

And I remember a client of mine who figured she had a low business IQ score.

But, here’s the thing. Like I told her, no one is born with business intelligence. Sure, some people seem more “gifted” when it comes to making deals and building empires. But I can pretty much guarantee they didn’t start out that way. I’ll bet they figured out how they needed to figure out a system.

And here are 3 three’s you can think about when it comes to figuring out your system.

2 of the 3 three’s your system can give you.

  • Focus – so you can achieve those goals you set
  • Freedom – to explore and pursue those goals and even set up more for the future
  • Fun – yeah, when you get your business rolling, it can be a lot of fun

 

Those are the 3 F’s. Here are the 3 C’s…

  • Clarity
  • Confidence, and
  • Control

 

And the third of the 3 three’s is how you build those others in three stages.

I call them stages.

Stage 1 – Envision Your Future:

It’s when you set up your road map or GPS. First you put in your destination address…and then determine the best route. Once you know where you want to go, and the best way to get there, then it’s on to…

Stage 2 –  Develop Your Strategies:

This is when you set up business components like schedule control, relationship building, and performance measurement.  And you’ll love how these strategies help you manage and build your business much more effectively. Then, you go to…

Stage 3 – Build Your Systems:

This is when you build your operations manual to outline your processes and procedures. And that’s how you finish your roadmap. Then, when you consistently follow your roadmap, actions become habits. And habits are what sets those “gifted” business owners apart from the vast majority of other business owners.

Sounds like a lot of work, right?

Well, success in business IS a lot of work. But if it were easy, everybody would be doing it. But they’re not. And you know what would make it even a lot more work? If you had to start from scratch. Like most do.

But you don’t wanna be like “most”. Because most are gonna get discouraged and give up. Because, like I said, they start from scratch. And it takes way more work than they imagined when they came up with their dream idea.

So, you can jump way ahead of the pack by doing one thing they probably won’t do. Plug your business into a proven System that’s already done tons of the work for you.

If you know me, or if you’ve connected with me for a while, you probably know I like hot weather. Yeah, the cold weather we get, here in Colorado, might be nice for a hot beverage around a cozy fire time. But give me the hot weather any time. So much so, that when I go on vacation, this summer, I’m going where it’s even hotter than here. And it’s mighty hot here today. But I won the Lifesaver Award for 2021. And my prize is a Caribbean trip.

“What?” you ask. “Lifesaver Award? Who hands that out?”

Well, thanks for asking. And I actually gave this award to myself. Because I put in the time to make the time so I could take the time to vacate the routine and hit the beach.

Are you with me so far?

If you have a regular job, your employer probably tells you how many weeks you get for vacation. And you jot it down on your calendar, of course. Because, well…it’s paid time off. You gotta use it or you lose it. Right?

Or are you self-employed? And one of the main reasons you went out on your own was to be able to work WHEN you wanted. And HOW you wanted. Right?

But then, you discovered there’s a whole lot more to building a business than sitting on the beach with a laptop? (which I won’t be doing because I don’t vacay that way) Yeah, maybe you found out you’d have to wear more hats than you originally thought. That’s the time I describe as, “when the dreamy eyes turn into reality eyes.”

But it doesn’t have to happen that way. In fact, the right system can help save you from drowning in a sea of to-do lists and day-to-day duties.

I remember a client who told me her recovery calendar (something I help you set up in the RondaReady System) “has been a lifesaver.” Prior to us working together, she just never sat down and planned time off. So, she never took time off.

Weird how often that happens.

You read a headline like that, “Lucky Brand Becomes First Quadrillion Dollars Business,” and you immediately know it’s true. Right? Wrong! I bet your scam radar kicks in. And you think to yourself, “What is this…National Enquirer or something?” Or at least you should. And I’m sure you know why.

Because there’s no such thing as a lucky brand.

I remember quoting a Spanish Jesuit, Baltasar Gracián, when he said, “It is a great piece of skill to know how to guide your luck even while waiting for it.”

And my guess is that ol’ Balty didn’t really think luck was a feasible strategy. Because successful people don’t sit around waiting for luck. They take chances. And they move. It’s not always forward motion, but it’s always motion.

You might already know that the word, entrepreneur, is French for “risk taker”. And risk takers know it’s not luck that wins the day. It’s action.

Think about Apple or Berkshire Hathaway or Walmart. If you’ve seen their advertising, over the years, you know they certainly don’t rely on luck to stay at the top. They’re moving. Every day. And they’re household names.

Because they understand that action is how you “guide your luck”.

When you’re starting out, it’s a good idea to take some classes to develop and hone your skills and talents. And then you can take those skills and talents out into the business world. Then, stick with it, and one day you could be sharing those skills and talents with a huge audience of devoted clients or customers.

And you might “feel lucky” to have devoted clients and customers, but it was the Action that got you there. Yeah, it doesn’t matter where you are in your business, you won’t get any further without action. Waiting for luck is a sure way to let other action takers jump on your good ideas before you.

But I believe you won’t let that happen. Because I believe you ARE an action taker. Or else you wouldn’t have read this far. Am I right?

A couple of years ago I shared a sad story about Bill (not his real name), an ambitious client of mine. In fact he set a goal of making $5 million in profits from his business within 10 years. But it all blew up in Bill’s face. And it wasn’t just a matter of skills and ambition. His goal took up all his time. Which meant there was none left for family time.

Business ambition shouldn’t destroy your family.

Bill didn’t make or take the time to set up his systems ahead of time. So that kept him focused IN his business. The more money he made, the more he focused IN his business. And he totally failed at family time. His financial dreams replaced the girl of his dreams. Phone calls and business meetings replaced his kids. So, for all intents and purposes, he married his business and divorced his family.

Of course, that doesn’t happen to every ambitious business owner. Because some of them are lucky enough to have a husband or wife help them go in the same direction. And when they’re ready, willing, and able to work together toward the same goals, they can balance business and family. Their strengths and weaknesses compliment each other. And they build the life of their dreams.

But, sad to say, very few people get there.

Because too many families don’t work well together. And business goals demolish family life.

And that’s why I talk so much about the importance of a system. A system that can free you up from the day-to-day tasks. One that separates you from all those things that can be done by employees or tools in the system. Then, you’re free to work on ideas and relationships. Instead of buying office supplies or making coffee.

Well, here we are. 5th of July. Are you excited? Can you feel the electricity in the air? Yeah, I know the fireworks are over for another year. But this isn’t about American Independence. This is about YOURS.

Because the 5th of July spells opportunity, with a capital O!

There’s a line in a recent movie where a dad tells his daughter that she needs to be willing to do what others aren’t willing to do. He’s trying to show her what it takes to be a winner.

If you’re a business owner or entrepreneur or even a wannabe, just take a quick scan of what’s going on all around you today. Lots of people are taking a 3-day weekend. And I’m not saying anything against that. In fact, a 3-day weekend can be awesome. But today, those people aren’t willing to work.

They’re willing to take the day off.

And since so many others are out of work mode today, you and your business can turn that into an advantage. And I’m not saying one day will help you beat your competition, but it can help give you mindset to do that.

Mindset is one of the key ingredients to success. Maybe even THE key ingredient. Because, when you think about it (pun only slightly intended), everything you do starts in your mind.

So, I’ll just leave you with this…because maybe you’d rather take the day off, too. Consider taking at least a little time today, this 5th of July, to do at least one thing for your business. At least one thing others aren’t willing to do. And see what it does for your mind.

Get your mind working in that direction, and the rest of you will follow. And I wouldn’t be surprised if your business followed you, too.

And that’s when the fireworks go off.

I read an article that talked about how there are plenty of teenagers who choose to get a job, when they graduate, because they’re just plain tired of school. And many of them never liked school in the first place. That’s probably especially true after a year like 2020.

Being tired of school isn’t the only good reason to get a job.

In fact, when you get a job instead of going on to college right away, you can start earning money instead of spending tons of it. Because, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but college is expensive, with a capital E. And for many, if not most, students, paying for college requires taking out a huge loan.

Hmm…that doesn’t sound like a fun path to take after graduating from high school you didn’t even like.

Plus, when you choose a job instead of college, you can start getting some serious real life experience right away. And that’s important because you’re gonna need to know about real life and how economies work, whether you go to school or not.

Yeah, a job gives you time to think better.

Here’s A dirty, little secret. If being a business owner was easy, everyone would do it! But they don’t. In fact, a business associate of mine told me about someone he knows who said a certain business model was “too much work.”

And that brings up THE dirty little secret for the easiest way to make money.

Do the work. Reap the rewards.

Pretty complicated. Right? Not.

But the secret is in staying the course. Because the greater rewards are in doing what everyone else isn’t doing. Greater rewards AND greater opportunities. In life AND business. Sure, it’s riskier to put yourself out there. And not everything you try is gonna work out? But is it totally worth it? Absolutely!

Way back when I was in the house building business, in California, there were times our resources were stretched to the max. And there was never a guaranteed ROI (return on investment). But I gotta tell you…it was awesome the first time I held a check for $420,000 for the sale of one of those homes.

Being in business for yourself is exhilarating…and exhausting.

And owning a business can be the easiest way to make money. Because when you serve others well, they’ll pay you for what you know or offer.

But owning a business can be one of the easiest ways to crash and burn, too. Because it takes a clear vision of what you want to do and where you want to go. That’s why I’m always telling my clients and students to write it down so it’s repeatable. Then, you can even hire employees to do the work for you.

All it takes is a system.

Well, I don’t have an official finishing school.

And I’m not the director, owner, or manager of a business school.

Entry level jobs?! Seriously?

It can take a ton of your time and money to go to college. And to think it could lead to an entry-level job in a specialty field sounds a little counter intuitive. Right?

Before you think I’m slamming all colleges and what they offer, let me assure you I’m not. But for many entrepreneurial people (like you) it’s just not necessary. Especially since almost anyone has access to almost unlimited online resources. For just about any industry or field of study.
