According to just regular ol’ number crunching, the odds of being born on this day, June 28, are about 1 in 365. Duh. And that means according to regular ol’ number crunching, with the current population of the world, there are about 20 million people out there who were born on this day. So, I know one birthday girl who doesn’t care about those silly numbers. Because anyone born on this day is unique. Right?

And I also know one birthday girl who’s mixing things up today.

In case my thinly disguised secret message isn’t clear yet…it’s my birthday today. And maybe it’s because it adds another year to my age, but I wanna give presents instead of getting them.

I think there are more and more people starting to realize you don’t have to have a college degree to be a success in life. And, like I’ve said before, college might actually be necessary for some careers, but not always. Not by a long shot. So, a lot more people look for alternatives to college. If that’s you, here’s a suggestion. Get a job.

Yeah, if you truly don’t wanna work for someone else, get a job.

I know, I know. It sounds like crazy backwards talk. But hang in there with me. And I think I can show you how it could work. Especially if you’re looking for college alternatives, but you’re not quite ready to start your own business.

A job is a great way to get some experience and learn the ropes of an industry or service you’re interested in. And, even better, you earn while you learn. Bam! That’s a win-win.

So, let’s say you wanna start your own burger joint. A friend of mine shared a story of a young guy who wanted to do that. So, that ambitious young guy got jobs in most of the major burger joints. You know, McDonald’s, Burger King, Dairy Queen. And he learned all he could. From the back room inventory to the kitchen to the front of the house cleaning.

And keep in mind, as he learned all the inside information he could, about running a burger joint, he also got paid.

Now, I’m not saying the only job you can get is flipping burgers. Although, if you wanna open your own burger joint, like that ambitious young man in the example, then flipping burgers is an awesome job. But these days you might wanna earn as you learn in a more high-tech industry…for another example.

Sure, you might be thinking, “They’ll want a college degree. So, that shoots down that idea.”

But even though a lot of people will tell you that those jobs require college degrees, it ain’t necessarily so. As a matter of fact, there are some pretty recognizable names and companies who’d hire you without a college degree. But, if you don’t have college credentials, you better have…

“The skills.”

Just do a quick internet search for companies that have hired young, ambitious people with “the skills” those companies needed. And you’ll find enough stories to convince you that you don’t need that piece of paper from a college.

But you’ll need to convince somebody that you have “the skills” they’re looking for…and that you can create or develop value for them. Show them how they’ll make more money with you than they’ll pay you. Do that, and I bet you get a job.

And if you really don’t have “the skills” anybody is looking for, then you gotta stick with entry-level work. And the benefit of those kinds of jobs is right back where that ambitious young burger joint entrepreneur started.

Earn as you learn.

It’s mighty important to know where you are. A friend of mine, who used to live on a Kansas farm, told me a joke the farmers liked to tell. It seems there was a hot air balloonist, from Colorado, who got caught in some sort of trade wind. And it swooped him off course. And he drifted all day and into the night. He drifted so far, in fact, that he fell asleep in the balloon.

When he woke up, he looked over the rail and saw a farmer in a field of corn. So, he yelled down at the farmer, “Hey there! Hey, can you tell me where I am?”

And the farmer looked up, smiled, and yelled back, “Yep. I might be just a farmer, but you’re right up there in that hot air balloon.”

Hey, I didn’t say it was the best joke ever. But it’s kind of appropriate for something I’d like to share with you.

You gotta know where you are in life. And in business.

So you can know where you’re gonna go. Or at least where you’d like to go. Because any journey has two main points. The start. And the finish. Right? Also known as Point A and Point B.

And the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. And the best way to make a straight line, in business, is to know where Points A and B are.

Sounds a little bit like a Geometry or Algebra lesson, doesn’t it. Well, in a way it IS geometric. Because you gotta work your angle. (*rimshot). And your angle is your brand. Who you are. And what sets you apart. In other words, what makes anybody wanna do business with you?

When you know WHO you are, it’s so much easier to know WHERE you are. And then it’s so much easier to get more clients, make more money, and enjoy life more.

The “get more clients” part is something I’ll be talking a lot more about in July’s UNversity class. I’ll be talking about the 3 units of marketing. And one of those is more fun than the others. Do you get “junk mail” delivered to your mailbox? Yeah, me too. But think about it for a second. Most of that so-called “junk mail” isn’t junk to the one who sent it to you. They see it as a way to try to talk to you. And tell you what they have for you. Sure, it’s a form of business communication. But it’s still communication. Because they have products and services that might help you. So, they want you to know about it.

And business communication, done well, is consistent.

But it has a starting point. Just like any relationship. I’ve shared, before, how two percent of sales are made on the first contact. And eighty percent of sales are made after five to twelve points of contact. But typically, only ten percent of sales people make more than three contacts. Ten percent!

That means ninety percent of sales people miss out on getting to the next level.

And ninety percent of sales are made on the fourth contact or after. So, if you wanna sell more (and if you’re in business, you better wanna sell more), build relationships. And consistently follow up with them.

But, like I said, communication (aka relationship) has to start somewhere.

And I think most successful business owners and entrepreneurs will tell you the best place to start is a referral. Because you can send out “junk mail” over and over. But if none of those people know you, how are they supposed to like you and trust you. But what if one person, who knows you, told someone else how great you are?

Yeah, I’ve seen that work like a charm. Over and over. It’s just human nature when you think about it. And it’s what made online social media so huge. People talking to each other about…well, just about everything.

Wouldn’t it be great if they were telling each other about you, your products, and services?

Well, that’s business communication at its best.

Not some sort of weird new language to learn.

Just one real person telling another real person real stuff about you and your business.

But how do you get that sort of system working for you? Uh…did somebody say “system?” That’s what I’ve been about for a long time. Helping business owners and entrepreneurs set up systems to build business better.

Of course, I’m only joking (mostly) when I say who needs real human beings when you can just get a business referral app. Yes, it’s a real thing. And from what I’ve seen about those kinds of apps, they might actually be helpful. But certainly not necessary if you’ve already got an all-in-one System. (hmm…where could I get one of those?)

A business referral app is just another way to organize part of your business.

Yes, referrals are a very important part of your business. Or at least they should be. And yes, you should be getting them and giving them. And yes, you should keep them organized so you can track what works and what doesn’t.

But, like I said…guess what else works even better. A total business System.

Because with a total business System you don’t only organize and keep track of your business referrals. You also automate processes. Respond to messages. Send business updates. Measure and track business performance. Set up hiring and firing policies. And SO much more.

But let’s get back to that referral part…

  1. accepting or allowing what happens or what others do, without active response or resistance 
  2. not participating readily or actively; inactive

 

Do those definitions describe how you see yourself running a business?

I hope not. Because that’s a recipe for somebody scamming you out of existence.

No, I think if you check the most successful business owners and entrepreneurs in America, you won’t find a passive one in the bunch. And I’ll bet they don’t get up wondering how to not work. In fact, I bet they get out of bed with a plan. Because they’ve seen how their plan…their system…keeps them on the winning track.

And that’s why I developed my RondaReady System all those years ago. First, to keep me on track. But before long it was part of a lot of other successful businesses. Owned by people who built 6 and 7 figures incomes. They built those incomes. They didn’t just passively watch it happen.

Do you keep notes? And, if so, do you keep track of them? Or are they scribbled notes crumpled up in your pockets, drawers, and on your desk? Notes can be kind of big deal. Because they can free up your mind to focus on more important projects.

In case you need proof, Nikola Tesla thought it was important to keep notes.

I read a quote from him that was published in Colliers Weekly way back in 1901. And it caught my attention because he mentioned Colorado Springs, and I live in that area.

As you read it, you can tell that Tesla didn’t want to forget his observations. But he also wanted to focus on what he could DO with the information rather than just try to remember the information…

“As I was improving my machines for the production of intense electrical actions, I was also perfecting the means for observing feeble efforts. One of the most interesting results, and also one of great practical importance, was the development of certain contrivances for indicating at a distance of many hundred miles an approaching storm, its direction, speed and distance traveled.

It was in carrying on this work that for the first time I discovered those mysterious effects which have elicited such unusual interest. I had perfected the apparatus referred to so far that from my laboratory in the Colorado mountains.”

See how his notes are like memories? He went on to say…

“I could feel the pulse of the globe, as it were, noting every electrical change that occurred within a radius of eleven hundred miles. I can never forget the first sensations I experienced when it dawned upon me that I had observed something possibly of incalculable consequences to mankind.”

Wow. Incalculable consequences to mankind. So, it’s pretty easy to see how Mr. Tesla would think about keeping notes on his experiments. Right?

And since he was considered, by most, to be a brilliant scientist, it’s probably a sure bet that he had a system for note keeping. Because he didn’t like to waste time. So, I’m sure he understood how hunting and sifting through piles of paper would be a huge time waster.

And that’s why I put such an emphasis on keeping notes in my RondaReady System. It’s just one part of the handy dandy toolbox I created for business owners and entrepreneurs. But it’s crucial part. Because, like I say,

Do you remember those Grimms Fairy Tales? I hope so. Because if you’ve never heard of them or read them, you’ve missed out on some good stuff. And one of those stories came to mind this morning as I thought about a meeting I’d be in later in the day. The Elves and the Shoemaker.

It seems like most of the best fairy tales include elves.

And if you’ve never read this short story (for yourself or to your kids) I won’t spoil the ending for you. But just know there’s a symbiotic relationship between the shoemaker and the elves. And the shoemaker works by day while the elves work by night. And it has a happy ending. Go read it.

And if you’re a business owner, like that shoemaker, imagine a bunch of tiny workers who work for you. But they don’t just work at nigh. They work all day and all night. Every day and every night.
