Here’s a little glimpse into the future. And it shows how technology and opportunity are maybe even better than bread and butter. Check out this quote from a website…

“5G speed. A14 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone. And an edge-to-edge OLED display. Ceramic Shield with four times better drop performance. And Night mode on every camera. And it pushes what’s possible. Like crunching trillions of operations on the Neural Engine. Or shooting in Dolby Vision — even pro movie cameras can’t do that. It’s superefficient for great battery life. And it’s ahead of its time, prepared to power pretty much anything that comes next.”

OK. I gotta fess up. That’s not actually a glimpse into the future. Even though the quote, itself, says “it’s ahead of its time.”

That quote comes directly from the Apple website. And it’s part of the description of the iPhone 12. But can you imagine someone from even 25 years ago reading that? They might wonder how anything with that power could ever be held in the palm of your hand. Right?

But it’s here. And that spells technology and opportunity.

And clever entrepreneurs, all over the world, are taking advantage of the power of smartphones. Some are even running entire businesses with them. Because you get the power to shoot videos better than even some pro movie cameras. And you get a computer that can process trillions of operations on a single battery charge up.

A friend of mine, who has two “kids” in their twenties, told me about how they’re both struggling with what they wanna be when they “grow up.” And I’ve noticed (maybe you have, too) how that’s not a rare problem. But it’s not surprising when you think about how many sky’s-the-limit, so-called opportunities they’re bombarded with all the time. And when young people know they have talents, but they’re not sure what to do with them, they get good at the distraction dance.

The distraction dance is a mangled mashup.

Did you ever see the YouTube video of Judson Laipply doing what he called “The Evolution of Dance?” If not, go look for it on YouTube. It’s an old video where Judson busted his own moves to songs through the decades. And it’s really funny to watch because it shows how dance moves changed over the years.

But it’s also a good representation of how distraction works. One minute you’re twisting the night away. And the next you’re moonwalking…or walking forward but going backward. And then you’re caught in a disco inferno.

Yeah, it’s fun till the “next big thing” comes along and you gotta learn that.

What if your business went so far in the tank you had to eat dog food to survive? Hmm…these days dogs have it pretty good. So, I’m not so sure that would be the worst thing. But back in 1921 things were way different. And a young entrepreneur in Kansas City saw his dreams crushed so much he had to survive on dog food.

And his challenges were just getting started.

Just when he’d start to gain some momentum, something or someone would pull the rug out from under him. Then, he’d have to start all over. And that cycle continued into the 1930’s and even into the 1940’s.
But even when it seemed all hope was lost, he never gave up. He kept going back to the drawing board. Literally. Because I’m talking about Walt Disney.

Yeah, a guy whose dreams were crushed enough to make most people give up.

But through the worst times, Walt never lost sight of his vision. And he kept working on better ways to tell a story and better ways to animate characters that could tell it. Maybe you’ve heard of some of his famous characters…

Pluto

Those are all famous characters audiences have enjoyed for decades. And they wouldn’t have existed at all if Walt Disney had ever given up after his dreams were crushed or his hopes were shattered.

But, like I said, Mr. Disney had a strong vision. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. And he never let the challenges break his focus or his spirit. I mean, I’m sure he must’ve had his moments of doubt, when he was all alone in his room. Who wouldn’t?

But the point is, he kept his eyes on the prize.

And that’s in spite of being told by MGM Studios that a mouse on a giant screen wouldn’t work because it would terrify women. And The Three Little Pigs wouldn’t work because there weren’t enough characters in the cartoon. But I’m sure you know, unless you’re from another planet, that Mickey Mouse became one of the most famous cartoon characters of all time.

And guess what? Those three little pigs were so successful they played in one theater so long that the owner put up a poster of them with long, white beards.

Walt Disney’s biography is a good read for any entrepreneur who’d like some inspiration to keep pushing forward. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how famous his name is now.

But getting back to that vision part. I discovered, over 20 years ago, what a crucial role your vision plays in whether or not you’ll be able to stick with it and pursue your dreams. And that’s why I spend a lot of time showing clients and students how to define their vision.

A friend of mine, who’s a musician, told me about how he used to sell CD’s of music for kids. And he and his wife established their business in multiple kids’ stores across Colorado and online. But, as you probably know, CD’s sort of lost their popularity. And so my friend had to adapt and provide download versions of his music. But, as you might also know, downloading sort of gave way to streaming. At least for a lot of music listeners. And my friend told me it could have saved him a lot of struggles if he could just turn back time.

I’m sure you’ve wished you could turn back time at some point, too. Right?

Yeah, it would be great to jump into your time machine, go back, and map out all those bumps in the road of life. But, what if you could? What would you sacrifice if you truly could map out those bumps?

Well, I think you’d sacrifice the journey. I mean think about it. When you rent a car to go on vacation, do you decide to stay home if you see there’s construction on some of the highways? No, you just go another way.

And sometimes you don’t know there’s gonna be detours till you get there. Then what? Go home?

No way! You’re on vacation. And by golly you’re gonna have fun if it’s the last thing you do. Right?

Well, I’m being a little silly. But it’s to prove a point. Life is full of unexpected surprises and consequences. But what makes it easier to navigate is the ability to think clearly under pressure. Think systematically. Or maybe an easier way to say it is IF…THEN.

If the road is closed, then take another. And if the weather might change, then pack more clothes. Or if the dates get changed, then make sure your deposits are refundable.

It’s the next best thing to being able to turn back time.

And you know what “they” say about change. It’s not a matter of “if.” It’s a matter of “when.” I could give you other sayings and quotes. Like, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Or when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Should I go on? No, you get it.

I read a definition of regret as “disappointment at something that has happened or been done.” But I think that’s only one side of the coin. Because regrets mean you’re disappointed about things that never happened or got done, too. Not YOU, of course. I’m talkin’ to the fictional “you” right now.

Here’s what 10 fairly well-known business owners said regrets mean to them.

And keep in mind, this isn’t a scientific study. And it’s not necessarily an indicator for what bothers business owners the most. But it IS pretty interesting. See if you can relate to any of the list of 7 regrets. We’re counting them down from least regretted to most regretted.

7. Set prices too low
6. Increased prices too fast
5. Focused on revenue, and not profit
4. Didn’t focus on sales enough
3. Didn’t know who were the right customers
2. No market analysis ahead of time, and
1. Should have started sooner

Wow. It looks like most of the list is about the money and the market.

But the number one regret is all about TIME.

Of course, it makes total sense. Right? Because lost time is the one thing you can’t do anything about. Because it’s gone. And it’s never, ever coming back. Unless you’re an Avenger with a connection to some sort of special space time continuum vehicle. But those are still way too expensive for most of us.

So, the next best thing is to go ahead and start working on your dreams and vision while you’re young. Or if you’re not young, maybe help someone, who’s young, get started right now. Because wouldn’t it be awesome to help them have fewer regrets when they get much further along in their life? Yeah, that’s what I think, too.

Bob (not his real name) read the article from a well-known business website. And he took it to heart. Because he wanted to look, sound, and think like a business owner. And he wanted to change his shoot-from-the-hip ways so he could build a business that might actually support him and his family for the rest of their lives. So, Bob jumped in with both feet…and his bank account.

Yeah, if you wanna think like a business owner, you gotta jump in.

So, Bob followed all the bullet points. And he went online (and even to brick and mortar shops) to…

  • Buy a good suit
  • Upgrade his phone to the latest, greatest
  • Buy a stylish analog watch
  • Get some “business shoes and suits”
  • Grab a high quality briefcase
  • Get a professional haircut

 

Then, Bob made sure his tattoos were all covered up under his new “business clothes.” And he practiced acting more confident. Of course, that included standing up tall with good posture, smiling more, and getting better at making eye contact.

But then things got a little tougher. And he had to work on his “open body language” so other business owners wouldn’t think he was unapproachable. Plus, he learned some “professional business language” so other business owners would see he knew a thing or two about business. Then, he worked on being comfortable shaking hands and other body contact. Because that’s how friendly people are supposed to act. Right?

And speaking of friendly, Bob’s next steps were to be more extroverted and fill up his social calendar. Because how will people think you’re a successful business owner if you’re not out and about all the time? Bob took it all very seriously and got really good at everything he worked on.

But guess what?

His sales and profits didn’t increase enough to even pay for one pair of those professional “business shoes.” Much less all the other accoutrement (fancy French word for “stuff”) he bought with his credit card.

Yeah, Bob’s efforts were genuine and heartfelt, but they were aimed at the wrong people. Because his business is targeted to consumers. Not other business owners. So, even though he maybe developed some great skills and certainly improved the look of his closet, he sort of squandered his resources a little bit.

And sad to say, Bob’s story isn’t rare.

Because the root problem is one that probably 99.9% of business owners deal with or suffer from. And that’s something I call a lack of System Think.

You and I weren’t born with a natural ability to System Think. OK, maybe you’re that one in a million exception. But I’m not. Most people aren’t born with it. And most people don’t learn it from parents or schools. Because those parents and schools didn’t learn it either.

But System Think is truly a game changer when it comes to business…or just about any part of your life. I know because it completely changed my life for the better. And I turned it into a complete System I’ve shared with businesses for 20 years to help owners go from 5 figures to 6…and from 6 figures to 7.

Some of the most successful and well-known business owners out there use some form of System Think. And a lot of them don’t even seem to care all that much about the whole business suit look anymore.

But that’s another story.

He studied math and physics at the Technical University of Graz. And he studied philosophy at the University of Prague. And one day, back in 1882, he went for a walk and a great idea popped into his head. Well, not being the kind of guy to let a good idea go to waste, he immediately started sketching his ideas for a brushless AC motor, with rotating electromagnets, in the sand. Now, that’s Success Thinking. And I think Nikola Tesla is a great example of that kind of thinking.

Tesla knew precisely what he wanted to achieve. And he knew why it was important to him. He knew how to set goals for himself. And he was committed to taking the necessary steps to achieve them. From what I’ve been able to pick up, reading about him, his ability to stay focused was second to none.

Think about it (pun intended)…everything starts as an idea. And that’s why great idea people, like Nikola Tesla, spend a lot of time thinking. Because idea people know how thinking and pondering help you get a clear vision. And if you can “see it,” there’s a better chance you’ll be able to do it.

And Success Thinking is a huge benefit of my System Think teaching.

Who do you spend more time with than anybody else on the planet? If you answered “yourself,” go to the head of the class. And since you spend every waking, sleeping, walking, talking moment with yourself, don’t you think it would be a good idea to avoid stinkin’ thinkin’?

You know what I’m talking about. All that negative self-talk. Those things you tell yourself which your self shouldn’t oughta hear. Like “I’m not smart enough to come up with good ideas.” Or how about, “There’s no way I could ever do what so-and-so did.” And maybe you’ve even wondered, “How am I supposed to compete with them? They’re better lookin’, have more money, and everybody likes them.”

Ooh, yuck. What a Negative Nancy, right?

Wouldn’t it be so much better if you tell yourself you CAN reach your goals? And wouldn’t it be so much better if you could see yourself successful…instead of as a failure? Of course it would be better. No comparison.

The most successful people are usually the ones who could see themselves in that position long before they got there. And they didn’t allow that ol’ devil, Self-Doubt, to creep into their heads.

If you wanna get to the Success Thinking, you gotta get control of your whole thought process. But where do you learn how to do that?
