How do I get more clients? It depends on what you mean.

Throughout the past year I’ve heard from many who either subscribe to my emails or get info through Facebook and LinkedIn. And a very common question I’ve seen is “How do I get more clients?” And my first answer isn’t always what you wanna hear. But it’s true. The answer is “It depends on what you mean. And are more clients what you truly need?”

Before I get to the “more clients” question, imagine yourself in this condition…

What if you were down to the last two weeks of living expenses in your bank account? And what if you had a bunch of bills due at the end of those two weeks?

I read a story like that, from a guy who’d fairly well-known in the world of internet marketing. He said it was “a very stressful time” for him. Because his second child was only three months old. And they still had large, unpaid hospital bills. But, of course, that’s not all.

He and his wife had the American debt lifestyle. You know, mortgage payment, car payment, and all the other expenses of living as “a fairly typical middle class family.” Plus, his wife had been a stay-at-home mom for years already. So, he knew it was up to him to make something happen.

And he needed clients the day before yesterday. So, he certainly asked the same “how” question as you or I would in those circumstances.

But, what do you mean when you ask, “How do I get more clients?”

Are you just starting out and you don’t have any clients yet? If so, then “more” could mean your first one. Right? And if you’ve been in business a long time, and your clients list has dwindled or gone stale on you, then “more” might mean more action from them. Or replacement clients.

Or maybe business is going gangbusters and you wanna get all the clients you can while the “iron is hot” so to speak.

And that’s why I say it depends. Because each business owner (you included) is different from all the others. Even if you’re in the same business as somebody else. Because you don’t have the same gifts and talents or personality as anybody else.

And since it’s so true that people like to do business with people they know, like, and trust, you gotta build relationships. Because they lead to the number one way to get more clients. It works so well I include five relationship building sections in my RondaReady Book and RondaReady System.

How to build business plan in 10 minutes or less

If you wanna be a business owner, you gotta have a how to build business plan. But guess what? You don’t have to spend any money on it. And you don’t have to spend years, months, weeks, or even days on it. Because it’s already in your head. At least if you’ve worked on it long enough to know what you’re doing.

So, are you Ready to set up your How to Build Business plan?

Yes? Great. Alright, let’s gather up all the tools you’ll need to get started. Let’s see…uh…do you have a computer? Or smartphone? Or…you know what…how about a pencil and paper? Whatever you choose to use, get ’em Ready so you can write down all these notes.

Now, enough of the big build up. Let’s get this business plan party started.

First…think of the market or audience you’re gonna help with your business products and services.

Next…be sure you know what your products and services are.

And next…figure out what you can sell to your market or audience.

And finally…figure out how you’re gonna get the message out to your market or audience.

What are crm tools?

Oh my goodness. I just read a sad, sad story. Oddly enough, it’s because someone asked me “What are CRM tools?” And I was looking for my information to share when I came across this headline, “I’ve lost touch with my kids, and I don’t know how to fix it.” Usually I don’t let myself get distracted by these things. But for some reason, it really stood out to me. So, I read the article.

And I learned about a woman’s heart-wrenching family problems. She divorced her husband, and they ended up with joint custody. Then, they moved to separate states. And the father took physical custody while she dealt with “bipolar issues.” But apparently, after the father remarried, the kids endured a step-mom who “was not a stellar parent.”

(Yeah, this is getting worse by the second, right? And it gets even worse.)

The step-mom began to physically and mentally abuse the kids. And the woman who wrote this article said her two older kids blame it on her because she “not only left their father” but also “left them with him.”

This is starting to make the “what are CRM tools” question seem unimportant.

Well, the woman in this story decided she needed time to deal with her “bipolar disorder” so she wouldn’t take things out on her kids. But the kids just saw it as abandonment. And by the time she did get the four kids back, the two older ones hated her. And she wasn’t able to reconcile with them.

So, those two older kids went back to live with their father (who was divorced again) when they were only 15 and 17. And this mom hasn’t heard from either one since then. She keeps in touch with the younger two. But hasn’t had contact with the older ones for years. And they’re in their mid twenties now.

I left out some of the details because they’re just more of the heartbreaking consequences of families losing touch.

But, it’s a good story to share, in a way, to show the value of CRM tools. They won’t necessarily save a marriage or keep your kids from hating you. But they DO help you stay in touch. At least when you use them to their fullest.

CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management.

And since relationships are at the heart and soul of my business, my CRM system is like the engine that drives what I teach. But the oil that keeps that little engine going is real relational communication.

So, I don’t just add a CRM to my coaching and then tell clients and customers, “Go stay in touch with your people.” No, I show them how to set it up. Why it matters. And what to do to make the most of it.

If you’ve already plugged your business into a good CRM, my suggestion is to use it for all it’s worth. And if you’d like to plug into what I’ll call the “world’s best CRM,” mine is at your service. It’s the best because it has the one thing none of the others have…or ever will have. Me.

But, it’s only for business owners and entrepreneurs who take action. For all others, it’ll be money they’ll probably wish they had spent on entertainment subscriptions. How do I build my business faster?

“How do I build my business faster?” Someone, who was looking for business coaching, asked me that question recently. And I’ve heard it quite a few times over the years. So, I thought you might be interested to know my authoritative, contemplative answer. Are you ready? Good, here it is.

Maybe you don’t.

OK, that’s all. I’m outta here. Have a good day. And I’ll talk to you later.

Just kidding. Sort of.

Because maybe your question shouldn’t be “How do I build my business faster?”

And I know that sort of goes against how I’m always saying my RondaReady System can help you build your business better and faster. But it makes sense. And I’ll explain.

When you already have a clear vision and mission and your values in place, you truly can start building your business faster (and better with my proven System). But if you don’t have those three things lined up first, you could end up spinning your wheels in mud so slippery you just abandon your vehicle (aka, your business).

(Side note: don’t jump into my RondaReady System if you’re not already a business owner with a track record of sustained sales. It’s too expensive for newbies and tire kickers.)

And there’s one more thing you need even more than your vision, mission, and values. Without it, none of your ideas will turn into anything more than ideas. Can you guess what it is?

Do you think it’s SEO? Or maybe a nice group of social media channels? How about a YouTube channel? Or the latest, greatest technology for super fast online connection?

Nope. It’s none of those things. And it’s none of the other so-called “marketing tools.” Because without this one thing, none of those things will do you one bit of good. And you won’t be able to build your business faster, better, or maybe even at all.

Get out of your own way

He knew he needed to spend some research and development time on his business. But he just couldn’t  seem to find the time because he had too much…well…too much business. In fact it felt like he was working 30 hours out of every 24 hours. Until one day, a little voice said, “You should get out of your own way, or you’re gonna be like this the rest of your life.”

Actually that little voice was me. And I’m not sure if I said it exactly that way. But it certainly sounds like how I would have said it.

Because sometimes you really do need to get out of your own way.

It’s easy to tell yourself you don’t have time to learn more. Or that you don’t have time to focus on what’s holding you back. And when you listen to those limiting, justification thoughts, you can sometimes forget the very things that got you as far as you are. You know, insignificant things like…

Relationships.

Uh-oh. I said the R word. But it’s true. When you don’t nurture relationships, it doesn’t matter if you come up with great ideas or not. Because you’ll be so busy working on work that everything else fades away. Here’s how my client, Daric, described it…

“As busy as my daily business has become, I never seemed to find the time for further business reflection and development. And, as a matter of fact, I don’t think I’ve worked on pure development in over 5 years. This is why I have been stymied. And I appreciate our time spent identifying the limiters and hindrance’s and putting strategies in place to get out of my own way. I also appreciate you lending an ear to talk about everyday life and provide positive perspective.” – Daric G. – Event Planner

That’s right. Don’t stand in the way of your own positive perspective.

Why make it harder on yourself than necessary? And when you work on building relationships, you might even find others who help you go further much faster.

CRM benefits: like health benefits, only easier

You probably didn’t get up this morning and think about where you could get some awesome (and affordable) CRM benefits. Am I right? Because you might not even think about techy stuff like that. Or, gosh, you might not even know what a CRM system is.

But guess what? I DO wake up and think about CRM benefits.

Because it’s a big part of what my whole business is about. So, just like the donut maker who wakes up way before dawn and says, “Time to make the donuts,” I get up in the morning and say, “Time to help somebody build their business better and faster.” (psst…I don’t say exactly that every morning)

But this morning, I read an article where another business guy talked up the benefits of a CRM system. I saw the headline…

“The only thing that truly matters is the RESULTS in your CRM.”

So, of course my interest was piqued.

The article mentioned how procrastination is a weakness that’ll eat you up and spit you out. And it quoted this saying: “Boldness magnifies bravery, while hesitation magnifies terror.”

Wow! If that doesn’t give you a visual of procrastination consequences, I don’t know what will. And another part of the article I really liked was how the writer said his company changed their marketing focus from “leads” to a qualified pipeline.

Hmm…makes me think of what I’ve taught for years about filling your pipeline by focusing on repeat and referral business.

And that’s truer today than it was when I first started teaching and coaching it all those years ago. Because, I probably don’t have to tell you, more than ever people do business with others they know, like, and trust. And trust is more difficult than ever in these increasingly disconnected days.

So, what does any of that have to do with CRM benefits?

Well, a CRM system helps you track and measure your efforts and results. And if you don’t know those numbers, you’re only lucky if things work out like you’d prefer.

And without a CRM (aka System) your brain could explode.

OK, I sort of made up that part. But I know, without a shadow of a doubt, you can’t keep track of everything you need to without a System.

And yes, it’s a little self-serving of me to say that. But I believe it so much that I’d be glad to see you get a CRM system from somebody else just as long as you plug in and use it. Because I care that much about your success.

In Woulda coulda shoulda land, the FearOf Family reigns supreme

It makes me sad to think of how too many people live in the world of woulda coulda shoulda. And there are lots of examples all around you. Maybe you’re one. I hope not. But either way you probably already know what I mean. “If I woulda started sooner…” or “I coulda done that, if only…” And of course, the old standby: “I shoulda started that (fill in the blank) years ago.”

Woulda Coulda Shoulda land was established by the famous FearOf Family.

The FearOf Family is a group of “siblings” with a whole lot of influence. And the dastardly superpower of being able to get their voices inside your head. Let me introduce them, and you can let me know if you’ve ever met any of them…or all of them. There’s FearOf…

Not Being An Expert

Yeah, he’s a big influencer. Because he targets all the wannabes and dreamers. And his voice inside your head says, “Who do you think you are to start a business? What do you know about what it takes?”

Ooh, those are just mean thoughts. But then there’s his sister: FearOf…

Not Knowing What’s Next

She can easily get in your head if you’re a newbie. Because you at least started a business. But you feel shaky because you don’t know where to go next. So, all she has to do is whisper, “What? How? Where? When? Who?” And, without an answer, you start robotically repeating those questions.

It’s diabolical, is what it is. But how about her sister: FearOf…

You’re Not An Expert

And she’s cunning because she gets you to doubt yourself. Even if you know that you know your products or services inside and out, she gets you with the what-if questions: “What if you can’t answer somebody’s question? What if someone calls you out in a public forum?”

Yeah, the what-if’s are sneaky, little varmints. And they’re connected to little brother: FearOf…

People Thinking You’re Crazy

And his clever conniving reminds you that “Rational people don’t take crazy risks like that.” And “It’s a much safer bet to work your way up through an established company.”

Uh-huh, he’s deceitfully crafty because he piggybacks on his sister’s what-if questions.

And I won’t describe their other “siblings” because I don’t want you to focus on their wicked ways. But I’m sure you’ve at least heard of them. FearOf…

Success/Failure (the terrible twins)
Not Making Any Money, and
Failing The Family

How to yodel your way to your dreams and goals

Back in 1974, a relatively obscure singer/songwriter couple celebrated the birth of their baby girl. And by the time she was 6 years old, the little girl joined her parents on stage. Sadly, her parents divorced. But the little girl continued to tour with her father. And he taught her how to yodel. And that would come in handy later on.

Not many singers, who know how to yodel, become famous.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet you can’t name three famous yodelers right this minute. Right? But don’t feel bad. I can’t either.

But it wasn’t exactly the yodeling that made the young girl famous. Matter of fact, she had to work hard and sacrifice to even be noticed. But she definitely got noticed.

When she was only 15, she began her career as a solo act. And her hard work paid off. Because she won a vocal scholarship to a private school of the arts. And that’s where she learned guitar and started writing songs. After that, she moved to San Diego, California, to live with her mother. But she decided to try and go it on her own again. And she even lived in a van so she could focus on her music career.

She worked hard to develop her own style. And her vocals and poetic, storytelling lyrics helped her land a steady booking at the Innerchange in Pacific Beach. That’s where she was discovered by a music manager and record company reps. And they were impressed enough to sign her to a recording deal with Atlantic Records in 1994.

But you might wonder, how did knowing how to yodel help her out?

Well, that falls into the category, I mentioned, of developing her own style. Because she applied some of the techniques for yodeling to the way she sang her songs. And audiences loved it. So did those record company people.

And she did so well that she’s one of those talented singers you know by only one name.

And she’s an awesome example of someone who created a vision for herself and didn’t let anything or anyone distract her from it. Focus like that doesn’t always mean you’ll end up rich and famous. But it IS the only way you can achieve your dreams and goals.

Dr Seuss can show you how to move ahead now.

Dr. Seuss has been in the news, a lot, lately. But not so much for how successful he was in the world of children’s books. And that’s a shame. Because his story is so interesting.

Theodore Geisel Seuss (his real name) didn’t start out his writing career as a children’s writer even though he worked for Vanity Fair and Life magazines as an illustrator and humorist. And he was actually successful as an illustrator for advertising. I bet you didn’t know he worked on ads for Flit insect repellent.

And I bet you didn’t know that his first book, “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street” was rejected by 27 publishers.

What?! Reject Dr. Seuss? Who would do such a thing?

Just imagine how the 28th publisher felt when that book sold over 6 million copies.

OK, I’ll stop betting you, now. But did you know Dr. Seuss also served in World War II? It’s true. He was assigned to an area they called the documentary division. And he wrote “Your Job in Germany” which was directed by (It’s a Wonderful Life) Frank Capra. So, the Dr. traveled in some well-known circles.

I read an article that said over 600 million of his books have been sold worldwide. And that’s a very good example of how persistence pays off, wouldn’t you say. I would. That’s why I did.

All those books and stories from Seussville are a testament to knowing where you wanna go and planning out a way to get there.

And that’s a big part of what I help you do with my RondaReady System. It’s also what I dive deeper into, one lesson at a time, with my RondaReady UNversity classes. Vertigo isn't as fun as it sounds.

A friend of mine is dealing with the effects of serious vertigo today. It’s happened before, and it typically leaves him extremely incapacitated for most of a day.

And considering what can cause vertigo, it’s no wonder.

I did a little reading and discovered how your inner ear contains a system of canals filled with fluid. And it’s amazing how that system lets your brain know which way your head is moving. When the system isn’t working well, they give it a long, serious-sounding name: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

And what that means is that tiny calcium crystals, in part of your inner ear, get loose and end up in the wrong places. The system doesn’t work the way it should and wrong signals are sent to wrong parts of your brain. So…you fall down. Or at the very least, you feel like you will fall down.

And if you’ve ever been that dizzy, you know how scary it can feel. So, there’s another example of how important it is to take care of yourself. I know hydration and fresh air are key. And so it proper nutrition. Of course, genetics can affect your results. But the main thing is to know as much about your body’s systems as possible. And plan for regular checkups and exercise.

That’s why I even use my RondaReady business management System for my personal to-do list. Because I know I gotta block out time in my schedule to move around, get fresh air and sunshine, and eat nutritious meals. And time blocking works just as great for personal time as it does for business time.
