Where do you see yourself
in 5 years?

Yuck. That dreaded job interview question. I’ll never forget the first time I heard it. And would you believe, little Miss-Organized-Business-Coach didn’t have a well thought out answer? True. I had a good interview. And my qualifications were on the money. And luckily I came up with a good enough answer to get the job. Appointment scheduling – it’s not just
for your doctor

Appointment scheduling has come up a couple of times in the last week with my one-on-one clients. And I thought it would be a good idea to share some things with you I shared with them.

If you’re already time-blocking, appointment scheduling will be real simple for you.

And if you are, you can skip this whole tip and save yourself some time.

But the main thing I want to share is to make sure you’re the one in charge of your schedule. Not the people you’re making appointments with.

Think about “the professionals”. Doctors, lawyers, CPA’s, etc. Now, I’d like you to put yourself in that category, too. Because claiming professional status is probably the single biggest obstacle for small business owners and entrepreneurs. I know you’re not calling up your doctor’s office and saying, “Hey, I need to see Dr. Smith. How about Sunday? And hmm…10:30 works for me, so I’ll see you then.” Right? No, what’s more likely is you’ll say, “I need to see Dr. Smith.” And an office manager (or receptionist) will say, “Alright. How about next Tuesday at 8, Friday at 1, or the following week on Thursday at 10?” Then, you choose.

So, that’s what I’m challenging you to do as well. Because you ARE a professional. And as a professional, you need to be in charge of your time. Speaking of that, here’s a couple of things about the timing of appointments.

Think about the length of your typical appointments.

And do you talk with clients or customers more by phone? Or face-to-face? Also, make sure you allow enough padding around your appointments. That extra time to be sure you have time to get to your next one. And properly prepare and to sum up the appointment you just had with some valuable notes for later. Be sure to write down what’s supposed to happen next and schedule any necessary follow-up. When you do it right away, there’s no chance of forgetting.

Here’s a “secret” little tip. Why do appointments always have to be an hour? Well, they don’t. Consider taking the psychologist approach and make your hour appointments be 50 minutes. Or even 45. Then, when they’re done, your padding will be built in already.

Two things happen when you adopt this professional approach to appointment scheduling. One, you establish yourself as a professional whose time is valuable. And two, you’ll have guidelines to follow until they’re second nature. Of course, there are always exceptions. But you can just deal with those exceptions differently when the time comes.

Farming Business – no, this is
not about planting your corn early

Someone I know, in the real estate industry, reminded me about the acronym FARM.  In real estate it stands for: Fixed Area Repeatable Marketing. And it’s a very common term in that industry. But what struck me is how farming, business, and marketing applies to basically everyone.

Even if you’re not in the farming business, you’re still farming for business.

So, it’s essential to know which seeds to plant in order to grow what you prefer to grow.

Maybe you’ve heard of target marketing or niche marketing. Those are just ways of saying the more you know your market, the better you can talk to them. Not just in person but also in your advertising and marketing.

If you can’t understand your markets needs, wants, desires, and even their beliefs, you can’t help them. And you certainly can’t sell them anything. You’ll find this in just about every marketing circle, but it’s because it’s true. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. It doesn’t have to be all three at the same time. But it DOES have to start with at least one of those. And they’ll get to know, like, and trust you faster when they see you’ve spent time getting to know them and their problems.

One of the best business motivational lines out there goes something like this: The best way to solve most of your problems is to help others solve theirs. There’s an incredible amount of power in being that kind of person.

So who are you farming for?

Do you have a clear picture in your mind of who your ideal customer or client is? If not, ask yourself these questions.

  • What level of education do they have:
  • How old are they?
  • Are they in a relationship or not?
  • What fears are holding them back from your product or service?
  • What preconceived notions might they have about you and what you have to offer?

Business and family
Now, that’s a benefits package!

Almost every time I talk to a business owner who’s having troubles balancing business and family, I think about my own family. And recently my oldest daughter turned 19. That got me thinking about it again…

Ford vs Ferrari

I saw the movie, Ford vs Ferrari, this past weekend. And the business side of my brain kept seeing how the movie was about so much more than race cars. Of course the goal to win races fueled their passion to keep improving their cars. But there were plenty of other lesser visible side effects.

Some Ford vs Ferrari business lessons…

First, the guys who own the car company. They want to build and deliver the top performance car possible. And they have a strong desire to be the best at doing that. After all, there are jobs and lives at stake. Well, that’s like you and your business. Of course, you certainly want (and need) to be the best at your craft for the sake of your business. But it’s also about being the best you can be at running a business. And there’s no need to sacrifice one for the other. Because the lives of you and your family are at stake.

Thoughts become things

What do all successful people, places, and things have in common? They all started with an idea. Every idea was once just a thought in somebody’s mind. Think about that for a second. Before there was a plow, or a tractor, or a train, or a car, or a plane, or a computer…there was somebody thinking them up. And since thoughts become things, I’d say it’s pretty important to watch what you’re thinking. Wouldn’t you?

I say thoughts become things. Ralph Waldo Trine said it like this: “Thoughts are forces.”

Yeah, you’ve got a lot of power floating around in your brain. And it’s just waiting to be unleashed and set free. But one thing you shouldn’t do is bog all that power down with ordinary, every day jobs that can be (and should be) automated or delegated.

Imagine Beethoven, sitting at the piano composing his 5th Symphony, and suddenly he remembers he was supposed to mail a thank you letter to the members of his orchestra for their last performance. Yikes! Talk about decrescendo. (that’s sort of a musical term for buzzkill)

No, it’s not very likely that Ludwig would have tolerated such interruptions of his musical genius with those day-to-day chores. He delegated them to others who couldn’t do (or would never do) what he could. And that was compose beautiful music.
