How about these business investment ideas?

I talked to a business owner who told me his company is too big to set up their business operations manual. Instead of taking some time now, to create a repeatable system he can delegate, I guess he’d rather repeat himself over and over again. And that’s a shame because he has much more important things to do. And, unlike me, he doesn’t consider a proven system one of the better business investment ideas.

Some of the best business investment ideas only require time.

I find it curious how so many business owners put their money and faith into buying insurance products to help through tough times. But they don’t invest in their own business to make sure it can run without ’em.

Or how about this? Business owners who invest in stocks and commodities…but don’t set up their business to make money even when they’re not around. Why pay somebody else to build your financial future? Especially when you could invest some up-front time and build a future you can share with employees, family, and friends.

If you believe in your business, invest in your business. And like I said, that doesn’t always mean money. But even if it does include money, what better place to put it than your own business? That helps keep YOU in control. Not some broker or agent who doesn’t care about you…just his commissions. And don’t get me wrong…I’m not saying anything against diversification. But when you don’t even start with what you have control over, that’s a little odd. Don’t you think?

Love what you do and business can be fun

I got such a nice compliment from a client, today. He said that since he started working with me and using my online business coach CRM system, his business has been a lot more fun Aw…that’s so nice to hear. Makes me feel really good. Here’s the thing…When you love what you do, business truly can be a lot of fun.

What I do is help you love what you do.

And I love what I do.

I consider it an honor to help people get control of their business. And I enjoy it so much when I see them gain confidence and overcome their obstacles. I spent a lot of years figuring out how to make more money in less time. But those years of experience helped me provide a better product and service for my clients. And my parents taught me to share. So that’s what I’m sharing.

The client, who gave me that nice compliment, is having a lot more fun with his business because he’s back in control. He’s not just working on the day-to-day technical functions. Are you a stick in the mud?

“When you pray for rain, you have to deal with the mud too.” ~Denzel Washington (from The Equalizer) Have you ever been called a stick in the mud? Nowadays it’s probably more like “don’t be a buzzkill” or something worse. But it used to be if someone called you a stick in the mud, they meant you were boring. Now, what in the world does this have to do with business? Well, I relate everything to business. Ha! And stick with me a minute (pun intended) and I’ll show you what I’m talking about…

If you’re a stick in the mud, you’ll get stuck in the mud.

And what I’m talking about is how you gotta do all the boring, behind-the-scenes stuff…AND…not be boring to your customers, clients, or audience. In other words, you gotta project the good stuff. Even when it doesn’t “feel good” to you. Like they say, “you gotta man up and do the hard work.” And that’s sort of true for you lady entrepreneurs, too.

When you want to build a lasting business, you gotta build a solid foundation. A big building will fall if it’s built on mud. And you certainly don’t want to get stuck in the mud. But that’s what’ll happen if you’re praying for rain and building on soft dirt. Good news is…it’s not that hard to build a solid foundation when you have a solid system to help you avoid most of the pitfalls.

Brainstorm ideas for business
instead of building more levees

Imagine yourself on your third vacation this year. And planning your fourth. Now, imagine enjoying a great view while you brainstorm ideas for business so you can do this again next year. OK, now wake up! It’s never going to happen. Life doesn’t work that way. You’re tied to your business, and it will blow up if you even think about one vacation. Yeah. That’s reality, kiddo. Not!

One of my clients is able to brainstorm ideas and be the business owner I just described.

And in case you’re wondering how she did it, I’ll just repeat myself. Systems. Processes. Operations established. This client of mine took action on the training we went through, one-on-one. Good luck on waiting for luck

“It is a great piece of skill to know how to guide your luck even while waiting for it.” ~Baltasar Gracián (He was a Spanish Jesuit, baroque prose writer, & philosopher.) You probably already know this, but successful people don’t sit around waiting for luck. They don’t rely on chance. They make and take chances. I just heard today how entrepreneur is a French word for “risk taker”. And risk takers know how it’s not luck that wins the day. It’s action.

Waiting for luck is like looking for the “pot ‘o gold” at the end of the rainbow.

Action is how you “guide your luck”. Today you might need to take some classes to develop and hone your skills and talents. Tomorrow you might take those skills and talents out into the business world. And next week you might be sharing those skills and talents with a huge audience of devoted clients or customers.

Regardless of where you are in your business, you won’t progress further without action. And waiting for luck is not action. In fact, it’s a recipe for letting other action takers jump on your good ideas before you.

Slay the dragon draggin’ down your business

You’ve heard that ol’ metaphor before, right? Slay the dragon. And the dragon can be whatever’s holding you back from going to the next level. Or starting your business. Or achieving your dreams. Do you have a dragon to slay? One of my clients sure did…

One client was able to slay the dragon. Another client just met her dragon.

As I was checking my email yesterday, I got a great message from Chris (not his real name) about his success. He told me it felt so good to “have my processes in place.” (See my process building offer below) Chris took action and made it happen. And now he has a super-charged, repeatable system in place for his business.

But then I read another email from Hannah (not her real name). And it was quite the opposite.

Hannah’s very frustrated and worried about some overdue accounts. These are customers and their accounts who haven’t been followed up with because no process was put in place to do that. And I wish I could say Hannah’s problem was rare. But I’ve run into it before with plenty of other business owners.

It’s a horrible feeling to know you’ve got money floating around out there uncollected. Especially since your day-to-day operations need that cashflow. And without a system in place to make sure it’s collected in a timely way, it can happen to the best of us. Sad to say, but I’ve experienced it, too. How about you?

Slaying the dragon and taking back control feels great!

I helped Hannah put together a whole process for “bill collections.” We set it up to start with the first notice of missed payment all the way through, God forbid, going through small claims collection action. And we designed all the template emails for this process as well as an important to-do plan. But we didn’t stop there. We even set up a report they’ll run each week to ensure they stay on top of this whole process. Sort of a back up to a back up to a back up.

Does it feel like your business owns you?

Tell me if this sounds familiar. You had a dream of owning a business. And you worked hard, made a lot of right moves, and sure enough…you made your dream come true. In fact, you did such a good job, now you even have employees. Awesome! Good for you. Only…is it good for you, when you find yourself working 12 to 14 hour days with no time to enjoy anything you thought you would? Maybe it feels like your business owns you.

It’s no laughing matter when your business owns you.

The scenario I described, above, unfortunately isn’t made up. It’s real. All too real for a business owner friend of a client of mine. And he’s actually working those 12 to 14 hour days. As he puts it, “Not even taking time to have a fun game of golf.” He even has employees he can trust. But, after asking a few questions, I found out he’s not effectively delegating. Big mistake.

Because this business owner believes everything would crumble without him, it’s now a giant weight around his neck. And he can’t be sure the business will support him and his employees. Talk about stress-filled days. Even though his business is making good money, he’s filled with worry. It consumes his daily thoughts. And that’s a recipe for disaster.

So, I recommended learning how to delegate properly.

Because when you make your operations easily repeatable, then everybody does it your way. And you don’t have to feel like it’s all gonna blow up if you decide to go enjoy some time with your family. Or who knows? Maybe even enjoy a game of golf…if that’s your thing.

And here’s an added benefit I’ve seen happen a lot of times. When you hire qualified people for the right positions, oftentimes they can help you tweak your operations even better. I know…crazy talk, right? How could anyone do anything in your business better than you? But guess what? You’re not the best at everything. And why would you want to be? Especially when you can pay someone less money than you’d need to do the same work…or even better work.

Say it out loud to the right listener

You’ve got problems. Right? Of course. How could you be a business owner in this world and have no problems. But don’t keep ’em inside your head. When you come up against a big challenge, sometimes you can just say say it out loud to another person and reduce a ton of stress. But it can’t be just any person…

Say it out loud to someone who’s been there.

You know what they say about opinions. Everybody’s got one. Ha! And most of the time it can be hard to open up about what’s troubling you with people in your life you’re around the most. Because everybody’s got their own ideas. And they’re dealing with their own fears. They’ll almost always tell you what they tried and how it failed. People seem to be eager to share their bad business experiences. And that’s so hard to listen to when you’re looking for answers, solutions, and encouragement.

I was on the phone with one of my clients yesterday. And she was going through what I just described. A lot of unexpected difficulties had popped up, in a 48 hour period, and smacked her around pretty good. In fact, she was on the verge of tears when she called. I could literally hear how extremely overwhelmed she sounded.

A good listener listens.

I’ve learned to listen and let my clients explain their situations to me. Because listening helps me ask better questions. And better questions lead to better solutions.

By the end of the hour conversation with my client, I heard her voice completely change. From fears and tears to strength. What brought on this change? We talked about each of the steps and actions she’ll take to help her through this tough time. And as she  realized I was truly listening and offering solutions, she started focusing on solutions, too.

But, how can my business grow without me?

If you’re like a lot of business owners and entrepreneurs, you don’t believe your business can survive without you. After all, it’s your baby. You dreamed it up. And it was you who poured blood, sweat, and tears into it to make it what it is. Right? The very thought of handing any part of it over to some stranger makes you shudder. And yet you probably understand you can’t do it all…at least you can’t do it all and stay healthy. So, maybe you lie awake nights wondering, “How can my business grow without me?”

Asking “how can my business grow without me” can take you where you don’t wanna go.

For example, a small business owner I know told me he’d be going into surgery soon. And he has no idea how long the recovery period will be. Now, that’s bad enough. But worse than that, he wasn’t prepared for this unexpected time off from his business. So, not only is there the obvious stress and worry about his medical condition…he’s also worried about whether or not his business will survive. And what do you suppose that added worry will do for his health? Right! Nothing good.
