That’s a quote from Israelmore Ayivor. And you could replace the first “building” with the word “business.” No matter what business you’re in, it started with a plan. An idea. What do you think of when you think of Ikea? Affordable home furnishings you assemble yourself. Right? That’s a great idea. But there’s a catch…you gotta do it yourself.

But no worries. They put the easy-to-follow instructions in every box. Just follow those instructions, and in no time at all, Voila! New bookshelves…or end table…or whatever. But without those simple assembly instructions, where would you be? All those parts…yikes! Does tab A fit into slot B or D? And are those metal thingys…are they screws? Or connectors? And where in the world does this fold-out piece of cardboard stuff go? Get the idea?

A building plan is usually something you have to work on by yourself.

You have outcome expectations
even if you don’t realize it.

Academy Award winner, Robert Duvall, was in a movie I enjoyed called “Secondhand Lions.” In one scene, his character tells his nephew, “If you wanna believe in something, believe in it. Just because something isn’t true doesn’t mean you can’t believe in it.” And there’s some truth in that for business owners. I call it outcome expectations.

Outcome expectations – you can believe what you choose to believe.

Even if it’s not currently true. Or even if it seems like there’s no way it’ll ever be true. And the outcome expectations you set for your business have a lot of influence on whether or not you’ll achieve your goals. I always tell my clients to focus on the outcomes they truly want. That’s the first, most powerful step, to make it all come true.

Your thoughts can have great power over your actions. And like I talked about in another article, your actions can conquer fear. Thoughts can control how you feel. And they can either be dark…or be a lighthouse in the dark. Good news is, you get to choose which way they’ll go. Wouldn’t you rather choose the lighthouse and go in the direction of your brightest hope? Well, that’s how you build your business better, too. First, focus on what you want. And then create a plan of action to get it.

An operations manual lessens the labor

Recently I was nearing completion of setting up the whole RondaReady system for a couple of my clients. We’d set up their operations manual with policies, processes, and procedures in place. Overflow isn’t always a good thing

A couple of different clients of mine were talking about car problems the other day. One of them was talking about an issue he had with his car on the way to work. Before he could finish, the other client started suggesting solutions. And the client with the car problem quickly got annoyed. Why? After all, the other guy was “only trying to help.” The problem was…he didn’t listen to the whole story. And he didn’t ask any other questions. He just started offering solutions. And that’s like pouring water into a full glass. You end up with a bad case of information overflow.

Avoid information overflow by asking questions.

Have you ever heard this saying? “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Depending on your source, that could be a quote from Teddy Roosevelt or John Maxwell or even Earl Nightingale. Doesn’t really matter. The point is, when you start giving answers to someone who hasn’t even asked you for advice, you might end up talking to yourself.

Instead of always jumping in with answers…try asking more questions. It does two vitally important things. First, it shows the other person you want to know more about them and their problems. Second, it provides you with much more information so you have a much better chance at giving the right solutions. And by asking questions, you help the other person pour some water out of their glass. Then, you can begin to pour in your solutions, and they won’t overflow.

‘Scuse me, but your leader qualities
are showing.

Years ago (do I dare admit decades) I worked for a large corporation in California. And out of the blue, one day, my dad called me at work and asked if there were any positions open in our mail room. What?! My dad had always been a successful business owner. So, that through me for little bit of a loop. I had always seen his leader qualities, and a job in the mail room didn’t compute.

Leader qualities are built from the ground up.

Now, after years of being a business owner myself and working with other business owners, I get it. A lot goes on “at the top.” And it might seem very appealing to be top dog. Or to think you can just show up each day and delegate responsibility to everyone else. But the truth is…leader qualities require so much more than a big office and a shiny desk.

When you first start a new business, you’re often the only decision maker. You might also be the worker bee, the coffee maker, and the I.T. troubleshooter. But here’s a news flash for you…every one of those jobs is molding you into a leader. And I believe you were meant to be a leader. No matter what your skills or products or services are, it’s almost guaranteed somebody needs to hear about ’em. And there are plenty of people who will prefer the way YOU present them.

You can (and should) lead those people.

By “lead those people” I don’t mean just telling them what to do and where to go. But also showing them how to get there. And what tools or resources to use to get there. When you do that…AND show them how much you care…you then have leader qualities they’ll pay you for. And that’s how you build a successful business. Getting paid well to serve others well.

Conquer fear by taking action

“Action conquers fear.” That’s a quote from Peter Nivio Zarlenga, a famous American businessman. And it sort of follows up to another article where I talked about “analysis paralysis” and trying to avoid mistakes. It’s liberating to take action and conquer fear. After all, like another famous American said (President Franklin Roosevelt) “The only thing we have to fear…is fear itself.” I know that’s a little bit cliché, but I’m using it to make a point.

You can conquer fear starting today.

But you gotta move. When you begin to take action, you soon discover how the next logical steps can start falling into place. And that’ll motivate you to take more action. And that’ll lead to more steps falling into place.

I want you to realize you only fail if you give up or never start. Uh-oh…comfort zone ahead

Two different clients, this past week, told me the same thing when I made certain suggestions. “I just don’t have the time.” And what they don’t have time for are some of the most important things they need to work on. At least, if they want to reach the goals they set for themselves. And as a result, they’re both being drawn down into the whirlpool known as (cue the Twilight Zone music) THE COMFORT ZONE.

A comfort zone is a place to avoid in business.

And I know what I’m talking about. I’ve fallen back into my comfort zone more than once. Can I get a witness? But I only went there so I could avoid doing the harder things. Trouble is…you can only avoid doing them for so long…then, you either do ’em or die. Well, your business dies anyway.

You know why you fall into your comfort zone…right? Yeah, so you can FEEL like you’re getting things done. But what you’re getting done isn’t building a better business. It’s just stuff. Anyone can shuffle papers, sharpen pencils, and straighten a desk. But you’re not just anybody. You’re the CEO of YOU incorporated. No one can replace YOU. And no one can think your thoughts. Or implement your ideas without you doing the important work outside THE ZONE.

Have you ever heard of Parkinson’s Law?

It’s a law you need to break. And the way you do is to set aside time, each week, to work on higher level activities. Those important tasks that help you build your business better. In a recent article, I talked about guarding your time. And it’s this higher level activity time you need to guard the most. Treat it like appointments you absolutely can’t miss.

Don’t worry about your paper, pencils, and your desk. Those things will still get done. Especially if you have less time to do them. Ever noticed how, when you’re getting ready to go on vacation you get more done in less time? Of course! It’s because you’re hyper focused. And what you focus on, you can and will achieve.

Are you setting boundaries?

I don’t like anyone messing with my family time. Not even me. But it can be challenging, sometimes, to keep family life and business life separate. Especially when you’re self-employed or running a business. And by the way…don’t expect others to start setting boundaries for you anytime soon. You know what they say about expectations…right? They’re just premeditated resentments. It’s true in personal relationships. And it’s equally true in business.

Start setting boundaries.

It’s a healthy thing. Not something that makes you appear disconnected. Anyone who thinks that about you is probably not part of your target audience anyway. Other people won’t respect you (or your time) more than you do. So, just know and understand how important it is for you to guard your time.

And you’re the one definitely in charge of setting your boundaries.

I had conversations, about this, a few times this last week. Some with my daughter. And one with a colleague. Boundaries go hand-in-hand with the values and schedules you live and work by. For example…when you value spending time, in the evening, with your family, you start by setting boundaries on that time. But if you find yourself consistently allowing work or something else to interrupt that time, it’s time to re-evaluate. Is it truly an important, valuable time? Or are you simply going through the motions?

Sure, that sounds rough, when you think of it that way.

But you gotta ask yourself the tougher questions so you can find the better answers. Your family life AND your business life will benefit in big ways. And don’t be surprised when you find yourself feeling so much happier and less stressed as a result. Speaking of results…

A passion to help others can build confidence

Time Limit Switch

You can do anything for a year. A friend of mine visited me this past weekend. We haven’t gotten together in about six years. She recently moved to a new state, and we talked about her philosophy of trying new things. I told her how I remembered her saying “You can do anything for a year.” And I know it’s true because it’s like having a time limit switch. I’ve always believed knowing when the “switch” gets turned off motivated me to meet the deadline. But…

…What about those things with no short term time limit switch?

You know what I’m talking about…right? Those things you’re committed to for the long haul. Like, having (and running) a business. Taking care of a family. Building relationships. Well, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, those things require your commitment to better habits. You want things to last and go well. But none of that happens by accident. For example…

When you first learn to swim, you start out dog paddling. But you soon discover how tiring that can be. So, you learn new strokes to help you swim faster, longer, and farther. Also, you gotta learn how to float so you can rest in the water when you need to. It’s just not realistic to depend on dog paddling your way across the pool…much less a lake or river. Once you master the more advanced swim strokes (HABITS) you gain the control and confidence you need to forget about the fear of drowning.
