In an appointment, today, a client of mine told me how he’s “raising the bar” on his staff. He was like you and me, when he got his business idea. It’s kind of like “putting the band together”. But when your business starts growing and taking off, you might realize how family and friends might be “bandaids” to hold things together “Until”. Risk management vs no risk

You’ve probably seen one today. One of those signs that says “right lane must turn right.” Right? Sure, those signs make perfect sense. They keep traffic flowing in the most logical and safest direction. You might call it a form of risk management. And it’s necessary, but…

Risk management doesn’t mean you never take any risks.

Most entrepreneurs and business owners have experienced a fairly common risk management tactic from well-meaning friends and family. Has this happened to you? You start up your business idea, and a lot of people in your life…even those closest to you…say things like:

  • You should think about your family before trying something like that, or
  • Have you thought about what you’re gonna do if this doesn’t work out? Or

Laid up and making no money?
Oh no!

Can your business make money without you? Yesterday, a client of mine told me a sad story of a colleague. He lives in a different and was working in his front yard and fell out of a tree. And now he’s in the hospital and has been for a couple weeks. Looks like he will be for a few more. The worst part is…he’s laid up and his business is making no money.

Can you say you run your
business worry free?

I remember, when my kids were much smaller, and we were about to go on their first, official vacation as a family. I was so excited to put everything together, plan the trip, pack the car, and hit the road. In fact, the whole family was excited. And we could’ve just as easily worried about things instead. For example, what if the car broke down…or wouldn’t start in the first place. What if we got lost on the way. And what if somebody got sick. But we didn’t worry about those things. We trusted the smooth-running systems in our car, in our plans, and in our ability to take care of each other. So, we were excited! In that same way I can run my business worry free. Trusting systems, plans, and skills.

I just read an article, online, that talked about how “you never stop worrying about your business, no matter how well it’s doing. But I prefer to put a positive spin on things every chance I get. Physical symptoms of anxiety and excitement are practically identical. So, it’s important to be aware of what you’re telling yourself. Instead of beating your own brow, be your own cheerleader. Be a good “self coach”. And what do good coaches do? The best ones motivate and bring out the best in others. Who says you can’t do that for yourself? Certainly not me.

What’s in your business action plan?

I spent a little extra time going over a business action plan for a client of mine. Not because she hasn’t already laid out plans for her business. But because she was on a bit of a rant about other people and their lack of a good work ethic. It started out innocently enough. But one story lead to another and another. And pretty soon it was clear…she was just venting. Here’s why that’s not good…

Venting tends to focus on feelings. In other words, after venting about one problem and getting it off your chest, you might get sort of a good feeling of relief. And your subconscious wants that feeling to continue. So, you vent another story…which leads to another. And so on. That might feel good in the short term, but…

Complaining and venting is not a good business action plan.

When you complain too much I think you’ll discover your mind shuts down on answers and solutions. Instead it focuses on problems. And focusing on problems creates a vicious cycle. The more you talk about problems, the more problems you can find. Like a friend of mind says, “It’s always easier to solve other people’s problems.” But solving their problems won’t make your business even one more dime.

It’s only when you acknowledge where YOU need to take action that helps YOUR business.

Can complaining ever help? Well, I think it can in very small doses. As long as you use it as an awareness check. Try to listen to yourself and what you’re complaining about. Then, apply your focus on how you’re going to make it better. Write down your thoughts. Even the little ones. Not everything needs to be a BIG, bold, earth-shaking A-ha! moment.
Once you write down your thoughts, consider organizing them in order of importance. And guess what will start to form before your very eyes?
An updated, re-purposed, and thoughtful business action plan. And taking those actions will ultimately feel better than venting. As I talked with one of my clients today he mentioned some of his “lower performing customers” The way his business is set up, he makes money when they make money. And he said some of them aren’t adding much to his bottom line.

As I listened, I noticed there was a lot of talk about “them”. But he didn’t talk about what he was adding to the relationships. So, I just asked him outright, “What are you putting into the relationships?” I know he has a lot of customer relationship skills from his days as a salesman. But I wanted to find out if he was using any of them. Like I said, if you want something out of a relationship, you gotta put something in.

I asked my client if he was providing some value by offering advice, suggestions, or tips to help them advertise his product. His quiet answer was…

“No.”

So guess what he’s gonna do now? Build a nice list of great tips for his customers to help them in their business. The best part of doing that extra work is how he’ll benefit directly, too. Remember…he makes money in his business when his customers make money in theirs. What is an online business coach?
And do they really help?

The other day I was in a social group, and the subject came up about what we all did for a living. When I said I’m a business coach and that I offer an online business coach CRM system, someone asked, “Well, what is an online business coach?” I went through the different things I help my clients do, and the same person asked, “And does having an online coach really help?” So, I shared this short story…

Part of my services (and part of my online video course) talks about creating an accomplishment board. It’s a great tool for setting goals and putting them somewhere highly visible where you can’t forget them. And I met with a new client two weeks ago and helped him start his accomplishment board. We met, today, and he brought it with him. He’s already starting a few of the accomplishments he wanted done before the end of this year. And he told me he’s so happy how just this one exercise has already helped him feel so much more focused and energized to keep going.

So, ask my clients, “What is an online business coach?”

From my experience, I think most of them would say I’ve helped them focus and turn ideas into action. Could they do this on their own? You bet! But the point is, they had either forgotten how to do it on their own…or they just plain hadn’t done it. And a good business coach can be the extra push in the right direction. Someone who can look at their business objectively. And find a way to help turn ideas into actions. And actions into success.

Success has such a nice ring to it…right?
