Nothing but flowers

It’s Monday. And it’s the last day of August for 2020. And I’m a business coach. So, naturally I’m thinking of nothing but flowers. And butterflies and puppies and rainbows. Because…well…it beats thinking about bad stuff. Right?

Actually the song (Nothing But) Flowers popped into my head.

Back in 1988 the band, Talking Heads, put out their last album called “Naked.” And that was one of my favorite songs on it. Because of it’s sardonic wit. (How’s that for a fifty cent word?)

When you listen to, or read, the lyrics, you wonder if someone is making the best of a bad situation or if they’re using some reverse psychology. And I sort of think it’s a little of both. Because there are lines like…

There was a factory
Now, there are mountains and rivers.

And…

There was a shopping mall
Now, it’s all covered with flowers.

And some of my favorite lines…

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower.

This used to be real estate
Now, it’s only fields and trees
Where, where is the town?
Now, it’s nothing but flowers.

Ok, here’s the Thing

Did you ever see that old, classic B movie, Creature From The Black Lagoon? Their trailer was classic too. It said, “Not since the beginning of time has the world known terror like this.” Ooh…scary. If you get a chance, pop some corn and watch it even if it’s just for the goofiness. But The Thing I’m talking about today isn’t a terror to anybody.

This is about The Thing From The Blue Sky Lagoon

Ok, I made up that title. And the reason I call it the Blue Sky Lagoon is because that represents better times. Blue skies, sunny outlook. Right?

Here’s why it came up.

You gotta keep it solid from the ground up.

Just in case I’ve never told you…I had another fun career back when I lived in California. And I enjoyed it a lot. I was a home builder. No, I didn’t wear a tool belt and a hard hat. But my business was building and selling single family homes. And it was a great experience.

Some of those homes had ocean views, which was fun and exciting. And it was tempting, for me as a new property developer, to think about all the finishing touches. You know, paints, textures, glass and metal fixtures. And how all the rooms would look with cabinets and countertops. Smooth coat vs rough.

But if we hadn’t started with a soils expert, our product would have been terrible. Because without a solid foundation most houses won’t stand for long. And we even had to have some oil wells capped before we could move forward. Wow.

And if we had skipped those first steps, we would’ve spent a whole lot more time and a whole lot more money. With NO good result.

It’s the same when you build a business of any kind.

A lot of people (like I did…and maybe you) focus on the finishing touches. And there’s no plan for a solid business foundation.

It’s critical.

Time management illusion

I’m not a magician. And I don’t play one on TV or in the movies. But I’m gonna perform a time management illusion trick right before your very eyes. So, step up ladies and gentlemen. Children and business owners of all ages. What you’re about to see will amaze and amuse you. You’ll be enthralled and entranced. And when you leave, you’ll never be the same again.

So, is that too big a build up for my time management illusion?

Well, maybe. But I want you to notice something. And I want you to remember it from now on. Even if you forget everything else you learn, will learn, or ever have learned about business. Because it’s proof positive you don’t have a problem managing time.

Are you ready?

Great. If you’re wearing a watch, look at it right now. If you’re not, just look at any clock that’s handy. OK, are you looking at it? Good. Now, what do you see? I predict your watches, clocks, and digital timekeepers show some form of 12 numbers. Going clockwise (pun only slightly intended) the numbers go from 1 to 12.

Wow! How’s that for magic? Without even seeing your clock I could tell you what’s on it. Is that amazing or what?

Of course, I’m being silly to illustrate the silliness of time management issues. Because your watch or clock is NOT unique. You and I (and everybody else) deal with the same numbers on the clock. The same hours in a day.

So, I suggest you don’t have a time management problem.

Because time can’t actually be managed anyway. It’s gonna pass whether any of us like it or not. Right?

But what you probably DO have is a control problem. A schedule control problem to be more exact. And I’m willing to bet you’ll never get rid of it till you build or get a system for control.

Working for the weekend

“Everyone’s watching to see what you will do. Everyone’s looking at you!” Check out those lyrics from that Loverboy song “Working For Weekend.” And if you weren’t even born in 1981, I won’t hold it against you if you’ve never heard of Loverboy. But they rocked out on this song. And of course people loved it. Because who doesn’t look forward to the weekend?

But business owners aren’t always working for the weekend.

In fact, a lot of business owners work right through the weekend. Either because they run a business that’s open all weekend…or they can’t afford to take the time off. And if that’s you, what’s that in your hand? Is it a candle burning from both ends? Look out. Because you’re gonna get burned.

Another couple of lines from that Loverboy song say, “You want a piece of my heart? You better start from the start.”

Yeah, running a business you can’t get away from can feel like that. Right? Like it’s taking another little (or big) piece of your heart every week. Because you see friends and neighbors enjoying time off. Time off that should be yours, too.

But you’re so darn indispensable. Right? You’re the only one with enough brains and heart to run your business. And it’s too late to start from the start. Because you’ve already invested too much time and energy into this so-called “dream” of yours. And even though you don’t have it all written down, at least you know how everything works. And everything only works when you’re on top of it.

Wow, I’m tired just writing about it.

I can only imagine how tired you must be if any of that describes your life. So, if I were you, I’d throw in the towel and find an easier life.

NO!

It’s so hard to make a place for everything.

Ah yes. The ol’ progress perfection procrastination syndrome

And that’s how it usually works. Progress, perfection seeking, and finally the frustration that leads to procrastination. I don’t have any statistics on how many business owners are affected by this invisible force. But I’ll bet it’s close to 100%. And the difference between success and failure is how quickly a business owner makes the right adjustments to stop the downward process.

Progress and perfection are almost always mutually exclusive.

And I hope you understand how progress is not about perfection. Because perfection is impossible. It’s just a disguise for procrastination.
