Nope. An MBA is not worth it. Not worth the cost. And not worth the time.

And if you got one, and it’s totally worth it to you, I’m not talking to you. Because you either went to work for a company that required your degree, or you started your own business that benefitted from your degree.

But, for everybody else, an MBA is not worth it.

They say an MBA is the degree you definitely need if you truly wanna open the doors to the world of business. But, is that definitely true? Especially since there are so many options available, these days, thanks to the internet. My answer is “No.”

An MBA degree will cost you an extra two years of your life. Is that worth it? And, for most people, it’ll cost about an extra $100,000. Can you afford that? Or will you have to get a student loan? And if you do, are you sure you’ll be able to get a job that’ll pay enough to help you pay off that loan in 15 years?

As I said before, sure, there might be a few situations where an MBA is needed. But it’s not worth it, for most people, when you consider how many are making a great living without that degree.

Fortunately, you can still boost your business skills without a formal MBA program.

Compare the courses of top MBA programs with the course offerings on a variety of online learning platforms. And I believe you’ll discover the cost of those top MBA programs isn’t necessary. Because many online learning platforms can help you get where you wanna go for a fraction of that cost.

Of course, this will all sound self-serving because I promote my UNversity classes every month. It’s always in the bio at the bottom of each of my blog posts on the RondaReady website. And I’ve mentioned it before. But I know most people still don’t know how I got here. And it’s important to share. Because I make some pretty bold claims about being able to help you start and RUN a business.

And how I got here shows how you can, too.

So, this isn’t just me talking about myself. It’s me hoping to show you that you’re not alone in the quest to discover who you are. And where you wanna go. And how you wanna get there.

I spent 14 years in a management position for a large corporation in the same industry. And because I wanted to spend more time with my family and raise my kids, myself, I decided to make a change.

I knew I wanted to explore something besides what my insurance background offered. Self-employment certainly seemed like the solution. Because it looked like the best way to do what I loved (and was good at) AND hopefully make more money.

So, in my search for opportunity, I became a partner in a small business in early 2000. And I noticed how unpredictable their lead generation and profits were. So, I studied their industry, intensely. And before long, I mastered all the technical details of the business.

Then, I dived deep with some formal training and coaching. And I implemented what I learned.

That’s how AND when I discovered how to build a better business.

So, I developed and integrated a new business model that focused on referrals. I tweaked my strategies until they were consistent, reliable, and predictable. And I created clearly defined roles for all operational components of the company.

And, all modesty aside, I have to say it worked very well.

Because my efforts led to an increased overall production of 82% over the next 6 years. And gross annual profits increased from $310,000 to $1.7M in 4 years. Then, the business opened second and third divisions. And in only about 3 years those divisions earned over $4M.

Fortunately, news of those successful changes got around.

And several small business owners and entrepreneurs got in touch with me. They wanted to know my “business secrets.” So I took on some clients. But only the ones who were willing to do what it takes to be true business owners and create business profits.

Since then, I’ve helped scores of clients start AND run businesses better and faster.

I’m originally from California. So I’m a dedicated fan of In-n-Out Burgers. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a gourmet burger place when I find one or someone recommends one to me. And I think it’s so sad, when I discover one I really like, only to find out later that they’re permanently closed.

And that just happened. I found out a great one is permanently closed.

But I don’t get it. I’m sure there’s some sort of “business reason” for it. Because I don’t see how it could be a “food reason.” I mean, come on. Read these burger menu descriptions. And tell me your mouth isn’t watering to try one or more of them (except, of course, if you’re a vegan).

This first one is called the “Popper.” And they describe it as: “tempura-fried cream cheese and jalapeños, lettuce, tomato, onion, chipotle mayo, ketchup, and guacamole” 

Then they made one called the “Campfire.” And they describe it as: “buffalo patty, raspberry bbq, pepper jack, jalapeño bottle caps, and coffee-dusted onion rings.” Wow, that one sounds like it’ll help keep you awake.

And since my home is in Colorado, now, I had to include the one they call the “Colorado.” And they describe it as: “shredded lamb, green chiles, grilled onions, pepper jack, guacamole, chipotle mayo, ketchup, and tomato.”

They had several other choices. And they’d even customize one for you. Plus, they used local beef to support the local economy and make sure it was as fresh as possible. So, they were firing on all the modern cylinders. And that makes it even more puzzling why they didn’t stay open.

But if it was “business reasons,” I can think of a few things that might have made it possible for them to keep their doors open here in Colorado Springs. Fortunately, they still have a restaurant open in Castle Rock. But, as much as I enjoy their food, that’s too far to go to get a burger.

Maybe my System could have helped them stay open here.

We’ll never know.

I just read a news blurb about how Kevin Hart and Mark Cuban shared a missed opportunity. They both passed up on the chance to invest in Uber when it was just getting started.

Hart said that missed opportunity haunts him “to this day.”

According to the blurb, Kevin said he “scoffed at investing in the ride-sharing business because the idea of strangers picking up strangers and driving them places sounded like Murderville to him at the time.” That was on his own talk show, Hart To Heart, during an interview with Mark Cuban. He told Mark that missing that opportunity “makes me so mad.”

Apparently Hart was asked to put $50,000-75,000 into Uber. And it appears that if had, his investment would “now be worth more than $100 million.”

Wow! Can you imagine? That’s around a 200,000% ROI.

And as tough as that missed opportunity sounds, apparently Mark Cuban had it even worse.

The blurb I read said he, “was approached by Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick to invest in the early stages of the company. But Cuban thought the initial valuation of $10 million was too high. So, he offered to invest at a $5 million valuation, but never heard back from Kalanick. If I [had] given him $250,000 on a $5 million or $10 million valuation, it’d be [worth] billions.”

Yikes! That’s an even more ginormous ROI. Of course, I don’t think either guy is hurting. But still. Those are huge missed opportunities. And I bet, no matter how well off they are, they’d love to be able to go back for a do over.

But do overs, in real life, are rare.

I know you’ve heard that old expression, “You are what you eat.” So, with so many people suffering so many aches and pains, I gotta ask. What in the world are you eating?

Yes, what causes all the chronic pain, if you are what you eat?

According to some recent studies, supposedly more people are “more aware of the link between eating habits and chronic disease.” But the studies show there are too many people saying they have “busy schedules and a lack of grocery options.”

Well, if that sounds like you, not to worry. Because I found you some healthy options. OK, I actually found a web page that found some healthy options. But I’m the one who’s sharing them with YOU. And I don’t make any promises for who’s still in business or not. So, here you go:

If you prefer organic or all-natural produce, this could be a great source for you. And you can set up a subscription for weekly or bi-weekly deliveries. Plus, they add “recipes that feature the week’s produce.” If you’re interested, they deliver nationwide. And they ice packs to help keep food fresh.

Individuals can also customize their delivery schedules and cancel at any time.

Next is Hungry Harvest.

The started out delivering what they called “ugly foods and rescued staples.” And they had customers along the Eastern seaboard, in the Detroit metro area, and parts of North Carolina. One of the company goals is to help fight food waste and hunger.

According to their website, you can select the size box you want. And then you can choose “organic or conventional products, and customize your delivery with rescued staples.”

OK, here’s an interesting name: Imperfect Foods

They deliver throughout the Midwest, in much of the Northeast, and all along the West coast. They specialize in “rejected grocery store food that is still good to eat. And their produce includes “staples, such as carrots, and more unusual items, such as romanesco.”

They also offer “meat, seafood, dairy products, snacks, and plant-based products.” You can choose between organic and conventional produce. And you can even “specify your dietary preferences or requirements.” With a subscription you can receive weekly deliveries. And you can change your order preferences. Your subscription continues until you opt out.

Misfits Market

They say they’re a “produce delivery service that offers affordable foods by using certified organic, non-GMO modified fruit and vegetables that grocery stores might consider unsuitable.”

And they offer “dry goods, staples, snacks, coffee, tea, oils, sweets, herbs, and spices.” You can get a weekly or bi-weekly subscription with a shipment size and delivery date you prefer. Plus, they deliver to “almost every zip code.” But if yours isn’t included, you can add your name and zip code to their waitlist.

And the last option I have for you is The Fruit Guys.

They deliver across the continental United States. And according to what I read, they work with “more than 200 small farms across the country.” There are weekly and bi-weekly subscriptions available for individuals, families, and businesses. Or even one-time food shipments.

You can get a mix of seasonal fruit and vegetables based on where you live. And they offer “nutritious snacks, fruit, and tea gift boxes.”

OK, there are your food source recommendations. And as I looked ’em over I thought about how much work went into setting up their individual systems. Each company probably went through trial and error times. And each company ended up with a System to help them RUN as efficiently as possible.

A friend of mine told me about an old picture he used to look at, when he was a young boy, in his Great Aunt’s house. It was just a side view of a boy, drawn in black with no features. And my friend didn’t learn till many years later, that it was a profile of his Great Aunt’s son who had died many years before. It was one of those millions of untold stories found in houses all across America. And it made me think of your business profile.

What? How could I think about a business profile after that?

Well, that’s just how my brain works. I almost can’t help it. My brain likes to connect ideas and things. But I think that’s a good thing. Because, in a way, it’s all connected anyway.

And besides that, as I thought about my friend’s story, there was an ad in the sidebar of my laptop about setting up a Google business profile.

Google describes it as “a free tool that allows you to take charge of the way your business appears on Google Search and Maps.” And, of course, Google shows you how you can use it to “connect with customers, post updates, list your products and services, share your menu, and more.”

That sounds like a good thing. Right?

They go on to tell you that you can “turn local online searches into new customers. Even if you don’t have a storefront.” And they say your Google Business Profile helps you “show your credentials and service area, offer bookings, and communicate directly with customers to build trust.”

Well, I certainly can’t argue with any of those benefits. But it’s gotta cost something. Right? And why would you even need it if you have your own website?

No, Google says, “your free Business Profile complements your website by adding more visibility to your current business website on Google Search and Google Maps.”

OK, I get it. Put yourself in front of potentially a lot more people because of Google’s influence.

Yeah, it makes sense from an audience perspective.

So, given all that, I’m still gonna tell you to forget about setting up a Google Business Profile.

I know. Crazy talk, right? But I promise, this’ll make sense.

When you’re just starting out, it’s crucial to focus on YOU and your business. Not all the possible places you can advertise, market, and show off your products and services.

Because, when you’re just getting started, you’ve got a lot of wrinkles (or possible wrinkles) to iron out. And it’s not a matter of IF you’ll make mistakes. It’s a matter of WHEN. So, before you put your business in front of lots more eyeballs, it’s best to be sure your business profile looks good from any angle. So to speak.

I know it sounds cliché. But I enjoy long walks. On the beach, in the forest, regular hike and bike trails. You name it. And I enjoy the walking because it’s when I do some of my best thinking. As I was doing some research this week, I came across a web page with this headline: “Top 10 Business Tricks Which Successful People Know.” And, of course, that set off my consultant radar. Because I don’t think those are the best words to use.

You don’t need, and shouldn’t use, business tricks.

Well, maybe if your business is a magic show. Then, I guess, by definition, you’ll need to use business tricks.

But for the rest of us, there’s no need to be tricky. Resourceful? Yes. Strategic? Definitely. But tricky? No way. Because, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not, but people don’t like to be tricked into something. And the ironic thing about the article that followed that headline was that their list didn’t seem like business tricks.

It all sounded like good business processes and procedures. In fact, I’ll share their list, and I think you’ll see what I mean.

  • Be well organized
  • Keep detailed records
  • Study your analysis of your competition
  • Calculate your risks
  • Seek out expert consultation
  • Plan your next moves
  • Consistent promotion
  • Stay creative
  • Be willing to make sacrifices
  • Learn from your mistakes

Yeah, those things don’t sound tricky to me. They sound sensible. And even necessary.

So, why would someone feel the need to share what they call “business tricks,” when they’re actually sharing valuable business-building insights? My guess is it’s just part of a keyword strategy.

Or something like that.

But I always believed the best business-building advice, counseling, and consultation is based on what has proved to be correct, testable, and true. So, I was talking to a friend, yesterday, whose screensaver on his laptop is an animated Word of the Day (some might say he’s a nerd, but I wouldn’t…not where he could hear me anyway). Anyway, he mentioned that the word of the day, yesterday, was neoteric. And apparently it can be an adjective that means “new or modern.”  And it can also be a noun. As in “a modern person; a person who advocates new ideas.”

I like to think I advocate new ideas.

So, I guess I wouldn’t mind being called a neoteric. Although I don’t think a lot of people would use that word to describe me. Or anyone else for that matter. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it used before. Have you? So, for that reason, the word neoteric seems a little bit esoteric: “intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.” Wouldn’t you agree?

But you’re not reading this to find out how impressive my vocabulary is. And I’m certainly not writing this to try and impress you either. What I DO want to share is how I believe everybody looking for solutions in all the so-called “new ideas” spreading around the internet is wasting valuable time.

Especially when it’s business owners or wannabes who look for ways to make more moolah.

Because I believe 8 or 9 times out of 10 it’ll be the old ideas, the tried and true ideas, the ideas with proven results, that’ll solve your make-more-moolah problem.
