One of the members said their group name described “people with vague or half-formed intimations and ideas.” And he said it was for “those who dabble in ink” as they talk about their works in progress.

Members to this dynamic group included Warnie Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams, Colin Hardie, Adam Fox, Hugo Dyson, Lord David Cecil, and Nevill Coghill. Those names might not ring a bell for you. But there were two other members you might recognize. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Wow! Talk about talking about some works in progress.

Imagine the conversations there might have been when C.S. Lewis introduced his “Chronicles of Narnia” to the group. Or when J.R.R. Tolkien introduced “Lord of the Rings.” Of course we think of them now as blockbuster movies. Larger than life. But back then, those writers just thought of them as ideas and manuscripts.

Those guys formed an informal group they called “The Inklings.” And they met in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in the 1930s and ’40s.

Warnie Lewis, who was Lewis’s brother Warren, said, “There were no rules, officers, agendas, or formal elections.” Evidently C.S. was the main member, and others in it were mostly his “friends and university colleagues.”  And, according to an article I read, “pre-Inkling meetings of Lewis with Barfield and Tolkien had started in the late 1920s, before the group adopted the name.”

The article also said:

“When the group was most active, the Inklings held meetings twice a week, with six to eight members typically attending. On Tuesday mornings they convened at the Eagle and Child pub (commonly known as the ‘Bird and Baby’) in Oxford for beer and wide-ranging conversation. But their most important meetings were Thursday evenings in Lewis’s rooms at Magdalen College.”

I think it would have been fun to listen in on those meetings. Because that’s when “various members read aloud from books or poems they were writing. And other members responded with vigorous critiques and suggestions.” Can you imagine getting to critique a famous writer? Yeah, me neither.

But imagine being one of the first to hear these works in progress:

The Problem of Pain, The Screwtape Letters, Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, and Miracles. Those are just a few of C.S. Lewis’ now famous works.

In addition to Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien (or his son Christopher) read chapters from The Lord of the Rings. So little Frodo and Ben were first introduced to other writers in a pub. Wow.

Warren Lewis was quoted saying, “We were no mutual admiration society: praise for good work was unstinted, but censure for bad work, or even not-so-good work, was often brutally frank.”

And THAT brings me to my point for sharing all this with you.

Accountability.

Without it, everything you do might lead you nowhere, in a never-ending circle of works in progress.

But that doesn’t have to be YOU.

Wow! November 2023. I can remember when that sounded like it was far off in the distant future. But here it is. And today, the 7th, means one week of it is already gone. I know the rest of 2023 is gonna be a blur. So, I hope it’s been the best year yet for you and your business or entrepreneurial goals.

Whether it has been or not, I hope 2024 is your best year yet.

And that’s because I want every year to be your best year yet. Of course, I know we don’t live in FantasyLand. So, life happens and the world can get in the way of best-laid plans. But that doesn’t mean you don’t make ’em.

And plans still make a huge difference in what you’re likely to accomplish for the year.

We’re right at the last few weeks of 2023. And I know a lot of people like to start out a new year with big dreams and goals. They even work on business-building to-do lists, mind-mapping, and “vision boards.” In the RondaReady System I help my clients and customers set that up in their Accomplishment Board.

On the Accomplishment Board, you write down all those things you’d like to see happen this year. For you and your business. Here’s a quick snapshot of what I teach to make it easier:

Use different colors as you write down your goals. One color for your business goals. Another for your personal goals. And maybe you have some physical goals or relationship goals. Use different colors for each one so you can easily see each one at a glance. And I encourage you to write them down in the PAST tense. As though you’ve already accomplished them. It’s much more powerful to say “I am” or “I did” or “I have” instead of things like, “I want” or “I need.” I think you’d love what it can do for your subconscious.

I also make one more suggestion I believe really fires up the process:

Put your accomplishment board in a place where you can see it anytime of day.

Be prepared to be amazed at how much better you focus. Because you’re more likely to do it when you see it.

And here’s a hugely important fact. Only about three percent of the population writes down goals.

And it’s no coincidence how that’s the three percent who tend to get what they want out of life.

So, it’s worth it to take the time. Write your accomplishments down. Break ’em down into small steps. And get what you’re after in the coming 12 months. Make it your best year yet.

Legends, movies, and books tell the tales. And they’re larger than life. So, the stories make you swoon. And dream. And imagine yourself in their shoes. Whose shoes? Those larger than life characters who started multimillion dollar businesses with nothing more than a shoestring and an idea. And magically (or with the help of some special effects or other embellishments), with no proven marketing or advertising, they turn that idea into a phenomenon.

It sure makes for a fun movie. Or a great read. Or even a super interesting legend to spin down through time.

But, I hate to be the one to tell you (actually I’m glad to tell you), that’s not reality.

Because it’s gonna take some tried and true strategies to get you where you wanna go. So, here’s the question:

When is it the right time for marketing?

The short answer? Always. Because when you’re self-employed, and in any business, marketing isn’t something you can put on the back shelf for later. It’s always the right time to market.

But, here’s a weird twist. Many times getting clients can be one of your biggest obstacles. Don’t feel too bad about that. Because you’re certainly not alone. You haven’t been trained to market. And you have gotten a lot of experience cultivating clients. At least not consistently and predictably. So I’m here for you with some quick, basic tips.

First, like I said, remember it’s always time to market. So, things might be going great, and a bunch of new prospects are coming in the door. But don’t put your marketing/sales “hat” on the shelf. Because here’s what happens. When that big influx of customers or clients takes a downturn, then you don’t have a pipeline. And then you’re scrambling. So keep the marketing hat on.

Corporations don’t say, “hey, we’ve got enough.” And then lay off all their marketing people. Right?

They keep looking for more business. For the now. And for the later.

You need to do that, too.

It’s not easy. I get that. Especially when you gotta play all the parts in your business. If it WAS easy, then everybody would be successful. But it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might think right now. Because you can follow a tried and true system that’ll help you avoid the pitfalls that use up so much of your valuable time.

More money. A better house. A better car. More time to travel. Yeah, like Annie Lennox asked, “who am I to disagree?” Sweet dreams are made of these. And a whole lot more, too.

When I lived in California, my former husband and I ran our own real estate business. And part of selling involves staging homes. We had quite a to-do list. And we definitely had to prioritize our schedule. Because when you stage a home, it’s a lot easier to sell when you can make it look like nobody even lives there. And the best way to start is to remove the clutter. Even when it includes personal stuff.

Yep, when you remove the clutter, it’s not just trash.

You gotta take out family photos and “trophies.” And get rid of pet evidence. And deep clean the whole place. Because there’s nothing like a clean house to impress potential buyers.

And there are so many other details most homeowners don’t think about when it comes to getting a house ready to show. That’s why we set up a reliable, repeatable system. Because, as you’ve probably heard many times, and it’s especially true in the world of real estate, time is money. And potentially even WAY more money.

So, we made sure our team placed ample lighting everywhere. And we rearranged furniture to give it a more stylish appeal. Plus, we paid close attention to details. Like neutral paint. And wall treatments, clean grout, and good-working hardware throughout the house.

Then, we made sure to check these off the list:

  • pillows on furniture,
  • setting the table for dinner,
  • making sure the exterior’s painted and the lawn mowed,
  • fresh towels in the bathrooms,
  • pictures in key places on the walls,
  • making sure there are no empty rooms, and
  • everything dusted before every showing.

And that’s just a general idea of everything we did.

But the main point is how much work is involved. We wanted to be sure we did what a lot of home sellers neglect or overlook. Because that almost always gave us the competitive advantage.

“If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.” Yikes, that sounds harsh. So, how about this instead? “The best investment you can make, is an investment in yourself. The more you learn, the more you’ll earn.”

Those two quotes are from the same guy. Warren Buffett. A guy who knows a thing or two about making money. But before I go any further, let me say this:

If you wanna work until you die, that’s OK, too.

Because work is not a bad thing to do your whole life. Unless you work yourself to death. And that, to quote the Wizard of Oz, is a horse of another color. So, here’s how I believe you should look at work.

Right now you might think whatever you DO is your business. Wrong. Your business is a pipeline. It’s how you connect your products, information, services, and systems with your audience, clients, customers, or patients.

So, remember this crucial point: Being “self employed” means the business depends on you.

And, on the flip side, being an entrepreneur-business owner means your business can survive without you.

That’s why schedule control is so important. So, you don’t have to work until you die if you don’t want.
