We’re now in May. Can you believe it? And as I realized that much time has already passed in 2022, it made me remember a special quarter of the year for a client of mine. I remember how excited they were when they told me how they’d already made 50% more than they made the whole previous year.

So, what made the difference from one year to the next? Was it better marketing strategies? Or their ability to delegate everyday work to extra workers? Or did each team member get better at their job? Well, according to my client, the answer is YES. All those things.

Their reports for the first quarter of the year filled in the blanks.

Of course, I like to think of myself as an organized business woman. Because I worked long hours, days, weeks, and even years to get to this point. But it was SOOO worth it. Because the work I put into organization helped me create a business that has sustained my kids and me for a couple of decades.

And that reminds of me of the time I took my three kids on our first, official vacation as a family.

By “official,” I mean it was the first vacation as an organized business owner.

Notice the exclamation points after those last two questions? That’s because worry tends to escalate your anxiety and stress.

I’d like to share some client appreciation with you. A couple of years ago, on the way to a client appointment, I heard a weird noise in my car’s engine. So, I called Integrity Auto Repair here in Colorado Springs (no, this isn’t a commercial or affiliate link thing). And they booked me an appointment, for that morning, even as I drove toward their shop. I got there earlier than my scheduled appointment. But they took my car in anyway.

Then they diagnosed it quickly, repaired it, and had me in and out (hmm, suddenly I crave a burger) in no time. Even better than that, they gave me a clear explanation of what the problem was. And what it took to repair it. And, like I said, it was all in record time. That was awesome because I had such a busy day ahead of me.

And that’s a client appreciation story because Integrity Auto Repair is a client.

But I know, from experience (and other similar stories), they’re like that every chance they get. So, compare my experience with them to this other auto repair shop story from another guy I know.

He took his car in to have the brakes fixed. And the shop has a good, long-standing reputation. And they do good work. But after my friend dropped off his car he didn’t hear a word from anyone at the shop all the rest of the day. And, even by 11 the next morning, no word from anyone about what the car needed. Or how much the estimate would be. Or anything at all for that matter.

So, do you think my friend was ready to give a 5 Star review? Hardly.

See what I mean? Which one of those shops do you think should get more clients or customers? The first one, right? Because they understand how customer service is about relationships. Because better relationships is the number one way to attract and secure more clients.

Better customer service = more customers = more money.

But too many business owners don’t work on those relationship skills. If you believe your customer service has room to improve, focus on how you can better serve the customers you already have. Don’t take on any more until you figure this part out. Client appreciation won’t happen till you make it happen.

Vacation packages are extremely popular. And with good reason. Somebody (or somebody’s system) sets up a total itinerary for you. And all you have to do is book it, show up, and have a good time. And all the hard work has been done for you before you even get there.

Imagine yourself lying on a beautiful, white beach with clear blue and green waters tickling your toes. Or picture yourself in a rustic cabin in the quiet seclusion of the Rocky Mountains. No disturbance except for the occasional deer or rabbit (hopefully no bear) strolling by outside. Can’t you almost feel those cool, dry breezes billowing through the cabin windows?

Well, all you gotta do is look up those vacation packages and pick one.

For example, I found a website that described their beach vacation packages like this:

You’ll find more inclusions, more choices and more ways to enjoy your time together.”

Sounds pretty worry free. Right? I’m Ready to go right now. How ’bout you?

But if you’re a business owner, you’ve got a lot of work to do before you head out.

Two or three summers ago I wrote about how a system can help you vacation your way. And I mentioned how “the hurdle, for people with jobs, is waiting for that week or two weeks off to roll around each year.”

Of course, health concerns have made some travel plans a little more difficult. But some things about vacationing don’t change.

It’s OK to admit you’re not a business owner. In fact, you never have to be one if you don’t want to. Especially if you feel overwhelmed by it all. Because that can make you feel like you can’t keep up. With all the new skills or new apps or devices. And other tools to help you organize and delegate. And that can put you in a position where you look for someone to follow and mimic.

I saw a list for the qualities of an effective leader. Here’s that list in no particular order:

  • Focus on your business goals so you make decisions on purpose
  • Communicate, respectfully, with your staff and clients
  • Be an inspiration to your employees and community
  • Think like a consumer and a leader
  • Lead your people

 

So, if you’re a business owner, you’re a leader.

Or you certainly should be.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother getting a mentor or a business coach. I’d be “shooting myself in the foot” to say that since I’m a business coach. But notice I said “a mentor” and “a coach.” Not a bunch of ’em.

Because if you follow a bunch of mentors and coaches, you basically chase your own tail, so to speak. And a business owner should lead. Not follow. And plan. Not chase.

Here’s something else I’ve said before. “It takes business owners AND employees to run a successful business.” But you’ve gotta decide which one you are. Before you waste too much time. Because if you’re gonna be the leader, you focus on your core skills. And use all the extra time you’ll have, thanks to your focus, to organize and delegate that other day-to-day work to someone else.

Sure, that means you gotta give up at least some control. But only because you’re still in charge and under control. With a system you can depend on to help you automate, delegate, and even resuscitate your passion.

Someone once said, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.”

And that makes the key point. As a business owner, you gotta decide. Because you can’t effectively lead AND follow AND get out of the way.

The best CEOs take control. Because they know you don’t make good decisions by accident. Read interviews with just about any of the famous billionaire business owners, and you’ll see they tend to have that common trait. I could share some quotes from the likes of Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, and Elon Musk. But I’m sure you’ve read them Or you’ve seen them on TV or social media. Main thing is, they’re focused.

And they take control by making the difficult decisions.

I wish I didn’t need to say this. But so many business owners feel less in control than ever right now. And I can understand how you might be tempted to throw in the towel. I read an article, from a young woman who writes for a living. And I thought it was awesome how she reframed her life of “busyness” to a life that’s full. When she talked about it from that perspective, it sounded much more fulfilling. Here’s what she said…

Every day I either see or work with business owners who give more than required. Like a mechanic who goes the “extra mile” to get a car repaired fast. Or the dog trainer who meets client on the weekends because they have no other free time. And something I’ve noticed is how unselfish behavior tends to be a common theme for the most successful business owners and entrepreneurs.

But that unselfish behavior is a little bit selfish, too.

Sounds contradictory. Right? But let me explain.

In a way, you have to be self-ish. I’m sure, when you get up each morning and Get Ready for work, your first thoughts are about your household. Right? Sure. Because that’s exactly as it should be.

So, I’ll bet your first goal for each day is to do the best job possible for you and your family. And here’s the thing. When you serve others well, that’s the best way to do the best job possible. Because your excellent information, products, and services fill important needs, wants, and desires for your customers.

And then, they say thank you. With little green paper certificates.

Of course, these days, you’ll probably get digital compensation. But the result is the same. A fatter bank account. And that’s good for your “self” and the others in your home.

Is that a great System or what?

But what happens when you get behind in your day-to-day operations? And maybe even miss your deadlines? Next thing you know, you gotta play a constant, and serious, game of catch up. And that means you won’t be able to serve others so well. And then, those customers and clients, you worked so hard to get, might go somewhere else.

Clients and potential clients have shared sad stories like that with me lots of times.
