Hey there. Ronda here. I know I usually send you something in the morning. And, as I send this quick note out, it’s Friday evening. And I wanted to say a little something about the weekend jobs that might pop up

But I don’t mean weekend jobs like mowing or home improvements.

A while back I talked about the old passion versus purpose dilemma. Because there are so many business experts wo tell newbies to pursue their passions. And there are just as many who’ll tell you to find your purpose, build a solid business, and the passion will develop over time.

Plus, I shared a story (maybe you remember?) about how a business owner newbie went to two different seminars on two straight weekends. Yeah, in the first one, the main speaker talked all about how to “pump up your passion.” And the second main speaker, the next weekend, bragged about the “power of purpose.”

I think both models can be true. And the key word there is “can.”

But what does all that have to do with weekend jobs? Hmm…maybe nothing.

But then again, maybe quite a bit.

Let’s say you wanna enjoy a relaxing weekend with your family. Or your new main squeeze. But something from your work pops in on your phone. And you know if you don’t get right to it you won’t be able to stop thinking about it. So, suddenly one of those “weekend jobs” has all your attention. And that family (or squeeze) loses your undivided attention. Ooh, not good.

Focus on positive stuff. Sure, it’s human nature to be negative. And that’s part of this world we live in. So, you could say it’s only natural to be negative. But why would you wanna say that? Right?

Yeah, the sooner you focus on positive stuff, the sooner that stuff can happen.

And wouldn’t you rather feel good everyday? I sure would. Because, when you feel good, your actions tend to be good.

Like I’ve said before, it works so well, it’s almost like magic. And no magician required.

So, today, take some time to recognize when you don’t feel so great. And then pay attention to those thoughts.

What kind of questions do you ask yourself? Maybe that’s a good place to start a new and different story. Get some better questions. And then you can get some better answers.

That’s why I also recommend an annual remodel. For you AND your business. But especially for YOU.

You know who showed the world how to batch business in a big way? Henry Ford. He didn’t describe his assembly line idea as some sort of batching device. But that’s what it was. At least for the industry.

Mr. Ford’s business was building cars

And he was able to batch business tasks by building that assembly line.

When he separated the jobs and put each one in its own place in the line, he was able to build way more cars in less time. And that’s a famous big win.

I remember a client who was going through a very rough spot in her business.

And it certainly wasn’t her work ethic or skills. She had oodles of both. In fact, she’s almost incomparable at what she does. So, I suggested we go over her schedule of a typical day. And, as it turned out, she just needed better control of her activities.

So, I showed her how to batch business tasks. And she quickly lost that feeling of being out of control. It was a fun and exciting thing to watch.

Batching just means you keep the same kinds of tasks together and do a bunch of them at the same time.

And it can make you almost exponentially more productive.

Because you don’t have to shift gears so much. Like sending out an email, then answering a phone call, then writing your notes, then…well, you get it. Right?

Instead of all that, batch all your emails. And send them out. Then batch the phone calls you’ll need to make and do them all together. Then, do your other daily work that way. And you might be surprised at how quickly and easily you can form much better habits.

Are family and business like oil and water? I’ve read plenty of articles and watched videos that said that’s true. But I beg to differ. At least a little.

That so-called oil and water family business stuff is all around you.

And I think I’m a good example of what I’m talking about.

Because I started my own business with my family as my main focus and motivation. My kids, to be exact.

I’ve shared some of my background before. But, so you know, I spent 14 years in a management position for a large corporation. And during that time I noticed some things I really didn’t like.

The main problem was how little time I had to spend with my kids. And it wasn’t work I loved. And it certainly limited my income opportunities. So, after some deep research, I became a partner in a small business in early 2000. And that was a pretty good improvement.

But I believed I could kick it up another notch. Maybe even several notches.

So, I mastered technical details of business. And I developed what would become my RondaReady System. And here’s some numbers I’ll share, just to give you an idea of some of my results.

My system worked so well, our business increased overall production of 82% over the next 6 years. And our gross annual profits went from $310,000 to $1.7M in only 4 years. So, we even opened second and third divisions. And in only 3 years those divisions earned over $4M.

A professional archery teacher decided to show his students a new way to shoot an arrow. He asked one of them to tie a cloth around his head and cover his eyes. Then, he pointed toward the target and shot an arrow. When he opened his eyes, he saw how he had missed the target. And when he looked at his students, he could tell they felt sorry for him. Because they didn’t even want to make eye contact.

So, he asked them, “What lesson do you think I wanted to teach you guys today?”

And they replied, “Uh, how to shoot a target without looking?”

But the teacher said, “If that was it, I failed. Because I missed the target. Right?”

They all looked confused and nodded.

So, the teacher added, “No, the lesson is simple. Yo gotta keep your eye on the target. Because you could miss good opportunities in life if you don’t.”

And he could see the light bulbs go off in their eyes.

Here’s one for the “You Never Know” files. It’s from an article in a business journal.

“I worked with a guy for 30 years. And saving money at a senior engineering job had him with a net worth of several million, and a paid off half million house.

He was going to retire at 65, and travel the world. And he was 64, and could already access his $2 million 401k if he wanted to. He died of a massive stroke at his desk one morning 6 months before his 65th birthday. You never know how much time you have.”

Wow. That’s a sad story. And it happens too often.

No, you really don’t know how much time you have. But you do know it’s limited. Right? And maybe you won’t die at your desk. But you might have to deal with burnout from time to time. Plan A: You deal with it, if and when it comes. Plan B: Have a System to avoid it.

You never know when you’re gonna  go. So, I suggest plan B.

Because when burnout strikes, it can be almost impossible to be creative. Or focus on the day-to-day operations in your business. Especially if your business depends solely on you. And don’t tell me this doesn’t apply to you. Or that you’re immune to the effects of burnout because you love what you do.

I get it. I love what I do. But it’s not all of who I am. My business is only a part of me. And I don’t want the other parts to just fade away and disappear because I spent my whole life focused on business.

But how can you take a break, a vacation, when your business can’t run without you?

That’s the million (or multi-million) dollar question. Because when you find the right answer, you can enjoy time away from work. Time when you can focus on those other parts of you. Or your family. And friends.

Lots of studies show that mental and emotional stress can damage you even more than physical stress.

You can’t hold up weights, indefinitely. Because your muscles give out after a certain amount of stress. And your mind is like that, too, if you don’t give it recovery breaks.

Symptoms of mental stress include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Lack of memory or concentration
  • Compulsive behavior

 

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, I recommend you set up a system for you business. But not just any system. You need one that includes what I call recovery time.

You could look all over the internet and put some tools together in a mostly random way.

Another option is to plug your business into a system where all that work has been done for you. And, as it just so happens, my RondaReady System fits that bill quite nicely, thank you.

Opposite of scarcity is not found behind the crowd

OK, I know you know this. But what’s the opposite of scarcity? Yeah. Abundance. But abundance isn’t found when you go where the crowd goes. Let me say that again.

Nope, you won’t find the opposite of scarcity where most people search.

Earl Nightingale once said “Whatever the majority of people are doing, under any given circumstance, if you’ll do the exact opposite, you will probably never make another mistake as long as you live.”

Did you catch that? Because it’s so true. Especially lately as so many people don’t seem to want to do the hard parts of anything. So, think about that again. Do the opposite of what the majority does and you can enjoy the opposite of scarcity.

I read a story, about doing the opposite, from Dan Kennedy. In case you don’t know, he’s a well-known “multi-millionaire entrepreneur” and “highly paid and sought after marketing and business strategist.”

Anyway, he talked about his “first and only job” as a territory sales rep. And he said all the other reps would go to a city and “visit accounts.” No appointments. They’d just walk in. But Mr. Kennedy said it only took a couple of weeks for him to notice how that just didn’t make any sense. And he asked them why they did it that way.

Their answer was that if you “set appointments in advance, they won’t agree to see you.”

And Dan’s answer for that was, “If they don’t want to see me, why do I wanna go see them anyway? I’d rather go see somebody who wants to see me.” So, he sent mail ahead of time to let accounts know where he’d be, when, and how long they could expect to see him. He called it “forced appointment setting.”

It worked like a charm. He got to see 80% of the people he went to see. And he said the other reps tended to see an average of about 20% of the people they went to see. So, Dan outsold the other reps so much that his sales manager asked him to take Fridays off. Because he made everybody else look so bad.

And here’s why I shared that info with you.

Because the majority of business owners and entrepreneurs and wannabe’s don’t envision their future, automate and delegate the day-to-day stuff, or track their performance. And that makes it so much better for those of us who do to outperform the competition. Because there just won’t be much competition.

Marie Kondo has authored nine books, in Japanese, on organization and how to tidy up. Her first book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” has been translated into 44 languages. Yes, 44! And that includes Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and even English. And she’s sold more than 13 million copies worldwide.

I found out that her first television show, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” was Netflix’s #1 non-fiction release in 2019. And, apparently, the show received 7 award nominations that included 2 Emmys, 3 Critics Choice Awards, and a couple others.

Oh yeah, in 2015, Time Magazine included her as one of the 100 most influential people. Uh-huh, my guess is, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard of Ms Kondo. Right?

So, there’s something to this whole tidy up thing.

I talked about it quite a bit in my May class. The subject was about how to de-clutter your life and your business and your mind. Because it’s almost impossible to think clearly when you can’t find stuff.

I recently shared that thought on social media. And one response I got was “Nah. Clutter keeps you on your toes. Just ignore it and keep moving.” And I responded with something like, “Yeah, and everyone knows the best and most efficient way to get around is on your toes.”

The point is…clutter is not gonna help you get things done. Because it’s a huge distraction. Whether you care to admit it or not. So, it’s crucial to tidy up.

Where do you want to go? Do you know? I guess it’s no big deal if you don’t. Because it’ll probably all turn out just fine. Right? What do they say? “It’s all good.” So, come to think of it, why would I even ask,

“Where do you want to go?”

Ha! I’m gonna do what a good friend of mine does in situations like this. I’m gonna insert *obnoxious buzzer* sound. And call “foul.”

Because you need to know where you want to go. And you should know why.

There used to be a TV commercial that said, “a body in motion tends to stay in motion.” And I believe you can substitute the word “business” in place of “body” in that statement. Because a business in motion tends to stay in motion. But it’s not automatically forward motion. If you want forward motion, you need to analyze what works. And what doesn’t. Especially if you want to be able to answer the question, where do you want to go?

I’ve told this to my one-on-one clients enough times they probably wanna smack me.

If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?

You gotta Be Ready for when you get there, too. And part of being ready is knowing your numbers. Do you know where most or all of your business originates? And do you have an idea of where you’d like it to come from in the future? Do you know how to adjust your marketing to get results you want?

How do you know, if you’re not keeping score?

It’s a big part of being your own boss and conveying leadership.

For example, if you don’t know your numbers, you might think the answer for more business is always “Uh, I gotta go get more clients or customers.” But that doesn’t factor in the ones you already have? How are they producing? Maybe they might buy more.

That was certainly the case with my client’s business. So, we did a quick analysis of previous orders (aka: his numbers). Then, we set up some strategies for how to boost those monthly sales. And we saw how 75% of the increase he wanted and needed for the year could be achieved with his current customers.

At least as long as he helps his customers make more money. Because helping them make more tends to help him make more. Sounds logical. Right?

And we discovered all this with documented numbers.

I’m not talkin’ about just the old money-in-money-out numbers. Because you gotta know where it’s coming from. So you can be sure how to position your business for that forward motion I mentioned.

If you can afford a personal assistant, I’ll bet you love the benefits from that help. Right? And mostly because you can delegate a lot of the daily routine and focus on ideas. So, a personal assistant is sort of like having a walking, talking, external storage drive to help you do what only YOU can do.

But what if you can’t afford a personal assistant and still need that storage drive?

And another (possibly more important) question is, can afford not to have one?

Oh, what’s a hardworking business owner to do? Well, fear not. Because your friendly, online business coach is here with some ideas and tips to help you solve your dilemma.

I believe the first thing to realize is how crucial contact relationship management (aka CRM) is to your business. Because your life is full of things you gotta do. So many things, these days, it’s next to impossible to keep track if you don’t have personnel or tools to help.

So, here’s the question I ask my one-on-one clients. Why make it harder on yourself by trying to remember everything? And I tell them, “Your brain is too valuable to use as a storage drive.” Or something to that effect.

Think about it. Why would you want to focus on the boring stuff like phone numbers, passwords, and contact addresses? Or those day-to-day, drudgery details? Especially when you can get a personal assistant to remember those things so you can focus on creating and building your business.

Oh wait.

Maybe you can’t afford to hire an assistant. Especially if you’ve just started your business. But who said anything about hiring? I recommend you start smaller. With an assistant you probably have with you right now. In fact, a lot of stats say you’re probably using your assistant to read this right now.

And, in case you haven’t already guessed, I’m talking about your phone.

When you set it up to work for you, your phone can be an amazing organizational tool. Let it remember everything you need to document. And you DO know how vital it is to document all your business activities. Right? Something else I always tell my clients, “If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen.”

And, sure, you can stick with simple notes. But you can also set up your phone to add an action plan, the follow up. What you’ll do next.

Of course, I understand this is starting to sound a little more complicated. And it IS.
